Amazon all set to buy podcast maker 'Wondery'

31st December 2020
"Amazon says this Wondery deal doesn’t change existing shows they’ll still be available through “a variety of providers.” "

Wondery, one of the last major independent podcast networks, might soon be owned by Amazon. Amazon.com Inc said it would acquire podcast startup Wondery, aiming to strengthen non-musical content on its Amazon Music app.

The wall Street Journal had reported that the talks were going on for the deal, and wondery was valued for more than $300 million. Though, Amazon hasn't disclosed the acquisition price.

Amazon is relatively a late entrant to the prospering podcast space, a key area of focus for Spotify Technology, which has been investing in big names in an effort to become the Netflix of audio content.

Amazon says this Wondery deal doesn’t change existing shows they’ll still be available through “a variety of providers.”

Wondery has about 20 million monthly unique listeners. Wondery houses popular podcasts like “Dirty John”, “Dr. Death”, and “Business Wars”, according to a Variety report.

Bloomberg News recently reported that both Apple Inc and Sony Music Entertainment have held talks about acquiring Wondery.

Zoox, a Self-driving car launched by Amazon

15th December 2020
"Zoox's vehicle is a departure from most self-driving vehicles"

Amazon's self-driving vehicle startup revealed a prototype of its robotaxi, Zoox. The cube-like vehicle is loaded with sensors, no steering wheel, and a moonroof that is capable of transporting four people at speeds of up to 75 miles per hour. The vehicle can drive bidirectionally and has four-wheel steering. One can spend 16 hours a day offering rides in cities.

Zoox's vehicle is a departure from most self-driving vehicles, which resemble the cars of today. For it has gotten rid of the steering wheel and brake pedal. Seats for four passengers are arranged to face each other to make conversation easier. The doors on Zoox's vehicle slide open, similar to the Origin from Cruise, the self-driving arm of GM.

For easy maneuvering in cities, Zoox's vehicle is a few feet shorter than small sedans like the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla. It also has an unusually large battery — 133kWh — roughly twice the size of many electric vehicles sold today. The large battery also contributes to its hefty weight for its size, 5,401 pounds.

Zoox won't be selling its vehicle and instead intends to operate a ride-hailing service to help public transportation in cities. Zoox's vehicle doesn't have a steering wheel or brake and accelerator pedals, so testing it is more complicated.
