Things to check before starting your car
"To make your car more convenient it is important to do some preliminary checks before starting your car"
With the amount of money we spend on the payments, maintenance, and repair of our cars, you’d think we’d have a better relationship with our car. But understanding our cars—how they work, how to care for them, repair costs—can be overwhelming.
And to make it more convenient it is important to do some preliminary checks before starting your car.
Check the tires
Make sure you keep a check to look out for a flat tire. Also regularly top up the air in your tires to maintain the optimum pressure.
Choose to do so fortnightly or when refueling at the gas station.
If the tire is flat, replace it with the spare and get the flat tire repaired. Do not ever drive a car with a flat tire.
Check all fluid levels
You don’t need to check the fluid levels on a daily basis but do so once every 15 days or at least on a monthly basis.
Top off the fluids whenever necessary. Fluids don’t like to sit long because they are intended to circulate along lines and pumps.
As a matter of fact, without these fluids flowing on a regular, your fuel pump and the gas tank will break down.
Gasoline begins to degrade in six months, assuming you have a full tank. It will degrade faster the less fuel you have.
Clean all the glass area
The front and the rear windscreen, ORVMs, rearview mirror all comprise the glass area on your car.
Make sure that they are cleaned and the visibility is high at all times.
Dust particles may settle overnight, that’s why it is better to wipe the rearview mirrors before beginning your journey.
Adjust the rear view mirrors
Adjust the rearview mirrors for your most optimal view.
You should be able to see the small portion of the rear end of your car along with the lane next to it on your outside rearview mirrors (ORVM).
The cabin rear view mirror should look through the rear windscreen and should guide you as to what’s exactly behind you.
Adjust your seat
This could be more frequent if you are not the only driver. Do not start your car unless you are comfortable in the driver’s seat.
You should be able to reach up to the pedals without having to stretch your legs, while your hands should not lock when holding the steering wheel.
You should also be able to reach the other controls of your car when in the driver’s seat.
