After an early pandemic shortage computers are shipping again

11th October 2020
"Shipments of laptops, desktops, and workstations were up 13 percent in the third quarter"

Computer manufacturers shipped 79 million personal computers in the third quarter of 2020, an uptick of 13 percent year-over-year with Lenovo leading the pack, technology analyst firm Canalys reported.

Looking at the worldwide desktop, laptop, and workstation shipments, Canalys found Acer shipped 5.6 million units last quarter for a 15 percent increase from the year-ago quarter. That was the largest percentage increase from 2019. But Lenovo shipped the most units in the third quarter, at 19.3 million, an 11 percent increase from last year, followed by HP with 18.6 million, a 12 percent year-over-year uptick. Dell shipped 11.9 million units in Q3 which was actually a decrease of 0.5 percent from the year prior, while Apple shipped 6.3 million units for an increase of 13.2 percent.

Earlier this year, laptops were especially hard to find, with a huge, sudden increase in demand from people working and learning from home during the coronavirus pandemic. But the supply chain wasn’t able to keep up, and PC shipments declined 12.3 percent during the first quarter of 2020. But Canalys analyst Ishan Dutt said in a statement that vendors have started to recover in the months since.

Vendors, the supply chain, and the channel have now had time to find their feet and allocate resources towards supplying notebooks, which continue to see massive demand from both businesses and consumers,” Dutt said.

Spending on IT, including investment in PCs, will “be a core driver of economic recoveries in the aftermath of the pandemic,” he added.

Lenovo sails past expectations with 31% first-quarter profit jump

12th August 2020
"Net profit came in at $213 million for the April-June quarter, nearly double market estimates while revenue grew 7% to $13.3 billion."

Lenovo Group, the world’s biggest PC maker, smashed expectations with a 31% leap in first-quarter net profit, as the coronavirus pandemic spurs businesses to shift to remote work and schools to switch to online learning.

Consumers stuck at home are also spending more on PCs and other smart devices for entertainment purposes, the Chinese giant said.

Net profit came in at $213 million for the April-June quarter, nearly double market estimates while revenue grew 7% to $13.3 billion.

In particular, China sales surged, climbing 17% while those in Europe, the Middle East and Africa jumped 28%. Sales in the Americas, however, dropped 9%, hit by declining demand for smartphones in Latin America and a shortage of components for Chromebooks in North America.

“Chinese government is driving domestic consumption - for sure we should leverage that to grow our business. Last quarter results can prove that we have a very strong position in China,” Lenovo Chairman Yang Yuanqing told a briefing.

Yang told Reuters in a later interview that demand still had far more room to grow in China, where the penetration rate for PCs was still somewhere between 20% and 30% compared to that in the United States of 70%.

He said Lenovo’s sales during China’s June 18 shopping festival - which is heavily promoted by e-commerce platforms - had doubled over the previous year. “We really see the strong rebound after the COVID-19,” he said.

According to research firm Gartner, worldwide shipments of personal computers rose 2.8% in the April-June quarter, as vendors restocked their channels and mobile PC demand increased.

Which Gadget is Best Suitable for Online Education? Smartphone, Tablet or Laptop?

27th August 2020
"Smartphone, tablet or laptop ? Which one will you prefer for online learning?"

As the world is affected by the novel Coronavirus Pandemic, the teaching-learning process has shifted to online or digital approach. From elementary-level to university-level, all the classes are being conducted online throughout the world. Consequently, parents are concerned about the gadgets that could help their kids in digital learning.

People, generally, use a Smartphone, tablet or laptop for online education. Considering different factors like availability, health aspects, budget, screen, class-time, etc. the suitability of a gadget for online education differs from person to person and their age-group.

Here, we present you the device or gadget that could be efficient and suitable for you or your kids.

Smartphone

The gadget possessed by a lot of people i.e. Smartphone is handy, portable and easy to use. It is best suitable for short classes with possibly less or no slide shows or whiteboards because the screen is too small to read the content and can strain your eyes. Being handy, children can easily use it and surf the net for homework as well. The battery part may also be another disadvantage if you have longer classes. And, I personally feel that it’s difficult to do and submit homework and assignments in a Smartphone. But, if you have a limited budget, go with smartphones because something is better than nothing.

Tablet

Tablet, with a relatively large screen, is the best device for children. It won't strain the eyes as one can easily read the contents in a slide show or whiteboards. As it is easy to use, the children can join the classes on-their-own and can also surf the internet for their homework conveniently. There are several budget-friendly tablets as well which don’t lack much in functions and features. The battery aspect differs with the brand but will not cause many problems. Tablets are suitable for higher class students with a limited budget as well.

Laptop

Laptop, in my opinion, is the best gadget for online education. From attending classes to completing assignments and projects easily, it is the best device for students (from mid-school and above) and teachers. Varieties of functions, larger screen size and longer battery life are the major advantages of using a laptop for online education. However, the budget aspect can be a disadvantage as most of the good laptops are above $400 or Nrs. 40,000.

Online education, superficially, seems to be a great substitute for traditional education approach and also a step closer towards a digital world. But, it has its own consequences as well; Increase in screen-time leads to an increase in health risk as well. So, it’s better if you try to reduce the screen-time as much as possible.

Apple is starting to ship devices directly from its stores

10th October 2020
"Just before it launches new iPhones next week"

Apple is shifting how it ships devices to consumers: instead of sending out all of its hardware products directly from China or from local warehouses, the company is now going to use its network of Apple Stores as de-facto fulfillment centers, shipping products directly from the stores to get to customers faster. Thus Apple is extending its customer service by delivering the products faster.

The change, Bloomberg reports, will use Apple’s nearly 300 stores in the US and Canada to speed up local delivery for customers within 100 miles of a store. The company has already apparently started using the new system with several stores earlier this year, but the broader rollout is coming just ahead of Apple’s upcoming iPhone launch next week (which is already taking place later than usual).

The shift is largely an internal one, according to Bloomberg — so customers won’t be able to choose the store from which their devices ship. But using retail stores to facilitate faster shipping to customers could help get new iPhones in people’s hands that much faster, especially at a time when those stores are seeing far less in-person traffic (or are closed altogether) due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
