The new Nokia 1.4 is the perfect family-friendly device

7th March 2021
"The new Nokia 1.4 is the perfect family-friendly device – designed for families who are spending more time at home together."

HMD Global, the home of Nokia phones, today announces the launch of its latest smartphone … the Nokia 1.4. Boasting an impressive screen real estate that stretches to 6.51 inches edge-to-edge, it’s almost a full inch bigger than its predecessor, and the largest ever to feature on a 1 series Nokia. The Nokia 1.4 is a phone engineered and built at the moment.

Ravi Kunwar, The Head of Pan Asia, HMD Global said: As a father of two myself, I can relate to the challenges many families are facing with having to fit in so many activities at home. With these needs continuing to grow, we wanted to create a reliable and enjoyable experience that truly benefits all family members without adding to any household financial pressures.

nokia-1.4

Be it managing work emails, paying bills, or keeping the kids busy with online extracurricular activities, our designers addressed the fact that millions of families around the world are spending more time at home. In response, we increased the size of the screen on the Nokia 1.4 to the maximum capacity so parents, carers, and children can stay connected and productive. To further enhance the photography experience – on top of the improvements already brought to you by Google’s AI on the Camera Go app, we also added a macro camera to capture epic close-ups at home or outdoors. All powered by Qualcomm®, a trusted industry leader, and encased in a tough, mishap-proof body with our signature two-day battery life.

The new expanded HD+ screen comes into its own with video calling apps, helping families to stay connected amid the current climate, and showcases the Nokia 1.4’s camera capabilities. The dual-camera setup coupled with the Camera Go app by Google helps you take high-quality photos at any time, even under low light conditions. Capture precious family moments with Portrait Mode that lets you achieve professional-looking photos with blurred backgrounds. Use Night Mode to take color-rich and crisp low-light shots without the need for flash. Helpful storage indicators will take away any worries about space so you can carry on snapping.

The built-in macro lens will entertain the whole family as kids get up close and personal with slugs, bugs, and flowers while exploring the great outdoors and come in handy at home when you need to zoom in on the fine print on the latest utility bill. Nokia phones have a well-deserved reputation for being sturdy, durable devices and the Nokia 1.4 is no exception.

This is an affordable phone which you can happily hand over to the children to borrow without worrying about the condition it will come back in. Design-wise it is crafted to sit securely in any hand and contains a Qualcomm® chipset and fingerprint sensor.

Staying true to Nokia smartphone values, the Nokia 1.4 is ready for AndroidTM 10 (Go edition) and beyond. It offers a faster, more secure way of doing things with our unique Android promise and at least three years of security updates, you can rest assured your phone will stand the test of time on the inside as much as on the outside.

Built-in parental controls allow users to manage content downloaded from Google Play store, and will give grown-ups the peace of mind to allow children to listen, learn or play until their hearts are content. And there is no need to worry about battery life either.  The Nokia 1.4 will keep you entertained and connected at the same time thanks to the improved two-day capacity of the phone’s impressive powerpack.

So, whether it’s long video calls, streaming, or playing games, there’s more than enough power to keep the whole family occupied. The price-point will make it appealing to anyone who wants state-of-the-art tech for half the cost of a typical family’s weekly food shop.

Your Nokia 1.4 can:

  • Capture close-up details of slugs, bugs, and flowers when you’re outdoors or utility bill small print with the new macro camera

  • Easily power through the kids’ Google Meet for morning registration, and your work team’s afternoon video call with 2-day battery life1

  • Offer you a better-viewing experience with a screen the size of a 50 Eur note

  • Stay updated for at least the same time it takes your child to walk, talk, learn to speak and tell their own stories with three years of monthly security updates.

Pricing and availability

The Nokia 1.4 is available and comes in Grey and Purple with 2GB/32GB RAM/ROM configurations priced at an average global retail price of  NRS 12,899.

Google and Qualcomm investing $230 million in HMD Global "Home of Nokia Phones"

11th August 2020
"HMD Global has brought several dozen Nokia phones to market, from low-end basic handsets to top-of-the-line flagships sporting multiple Zeiss cameras."

HMD Global, “The Home Of Nokia Phones”, has raised $230 million in a “series A2” round of funding from some of its existing strategic partners, including Google, Qualcomm, and Nokia consumer division Nokia Technologies, along with undisclosed investors. The Finnish company stressed that this was the “first closing” of the round, suggesting more funding could be added at a later date.

A spokesperson also confirmed that HMD Global’s valuation has passed $1 billion. While Nokia no longer makes consumer devices, the brand is still synonymous with feature phones and smartphones, thanks to a licensing arrangement with HMD Global, a business vehicle founded in 2015 primarily to design and market Nokia-branded mobile phones, with Foxconn subsidiary FIH Mobile responsible for manufacturing.

A few months back, HMD Global unveiled its first 5G device, though the Nokia 8.3 has yet to make it to market. With another $230 million in the bank, HMD Global said it’s now able to “accelerate” its mission to make 5G smartphones accessible to more consumers globally. This will involve developing more alliances with U.S. carriers and building on existing partnerships with Verizon, Cricket Wireless, and AT&T that kicked off last year.

Backers

HMD Global raised $100 million in 2018 from Swiss VC firm Ginko Ventures, DMJ Asia Investment Opportunity, and Wonderful Stars, a subsidiary of FIH Mobile. The high-caliber nature of HMD Global’s latest roster of investors suggests where the Nokia brand could go from here. And as Google reels from the U.S. embargo preventing Huawei from using its mobile apps and services, the company has a vested interest in pushing another phone maker up the ranks.

As a European company, and the only remaining smartphone player on the continent with any meaningful market share, HMD Global is less likely to get caught in the geopolitical crossfire between the U.S. and China. Last year, HMD Global shifted its datacenter from Singapore to Finland, in partnership with Google Cloud, a move that will go some way toward allaying data privacy concerns.

HMD Global’s ambitions stretch beyond the hardware realm. Earlier this year, it launched a new SIM card called HMD Connect that’s focused on roaming, and it snapped up the assets of mobile, enterprise, and cybersecurity software company Valona Labs. At the same time, HMD Global launched a new R&D “center of excellence” to develop software-based services for Nokia devices. This will include building new offerings, such as remote device locking, cybersecurity, enterprise mobility management, and — in the future — imaging and audio technologies.

In short, HMD Global has pretty big ambitions, and with Google and Qualcomm on board, the company is making a bid for serious consideration. Even if it isn’t going to make big gains on the incumbents in North America and Europe, there is still significant market share in play in “key growth markets” like Brazil, India, and parts of Africa.
