Twitter voice tweets feature for iOS users

30th September 2020
"The micro-blogging site had started testing the feature in June but now the feature has been available for more iOS users."

Twitter is rolling out voice tweet feature for more iOS users. The micro-blogging site had started testing the feature in June but now the feature has been available for more iOS users.

Announcing the new feature, Twitter wrote on its official handle, “We’re rolling out voice Tweets to more of you on iOS so we can keep learning about how people use audio. Since introducing the feature in June, we've taken your feedback seriously and are working to have transcription available to make voice Tweets more accessible. Transcription for audio and video is part of our larger plan to make Twitter accessible for everyone across all features, both existing and new.

iPhone users will find the option of posting the voice tweets in the compose box. The users can tap on the voice tweet option, record a voice tweet, and post it. The tweet will appear on the feed just like text tweets do, followers can simply click on the voice tweets to play it.

Along with it, Twitter is also working on transcribing the tweets for people with disabilities after facing criticism for not having an accessibility feature for all users.

"Testing voice Tweets earlier this summer made us realize how much work we still need to do as a company, and we made a commitment to make Twitter more inclusive for the disabled community creating a dedicated team to focus on greater accessibility, tooling, and advocacy across all of our products,” Kayvon Beykpour, Twitter Product Lead, said in the blog.

Twitter gives workers day off to vote in national elections

23rd June 2020
"Twitter says it will give its U.S. employees Election Day off going forward and employees around the world paid time off to vote in national elections."

Twitter says it will give its U.S. employees Election Day off going forward and employees around the world paid time off to vote in national elections.

The San Francisco company said that if employees don’t have enough time to vote outside of working hours in their country, it it will compensate them for the time it takes to do so.

Twitter Inc. stressed though that employees responsible election-related work, including the security of its service, will continue to work on these days.

The move comes after Twitter announced that it will make June 19, or Juneteenth, the day commemorating the end of slavery in the U.S., a paid holiday.

The U.S. is a bit of an outlier among industrial democracies in holding elections on a weekday, according to the Pew Research Center, which said in 2018 that 27 of the 36 member countries of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development hold their national elections on the weekend so people have more time to vote.

Others, like Israel or South Korea, hold elections on weekdays but make them national holidays so people don’t have to choose between working and voting. Pew also found that about two-thirds of Americans are in favor of making Election Day a national holiday.

So why are U.S. presidential elections held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November? The decision dates back to 1845, when the U.S. was still mainly a farming country and November was a convenient for rural workers to get to the polls, according to a State Department explainer. The fall harvest was done, but winter was still a ways off. Tuesday, meanwhile, gave people ample time to travel if they left on Sunday to get to the polls. Lawmakers also wanted to avoid having election fall on Nov. 1, which is All Saints Day in the Catholic religion, an important holiday.

Apple Releases iOS 13.6.1 and iPadOS 13.6.1

12th August 2020
"Apple has released iOS 13.6.1 and iPadOS 13.6.1 to all supported devices."

Today Apple has released iOS 13.6.1 and iPadOS 13.6.1 to all supported devices. As the small increment in versioning implies, this build is all about fixing issues, and doesn't bring any new features to the table. Still, that doesn't mean you shouldn't install the update as soon as possible.

After all, it promises to get rid of green tint on some displays, which was caused by a thermal management issue, apparently. It also fixes an issue which disabled Exposure Notifications for some users.

Additionally, an issue that prevented unneeded system data files from being automatically deleted when storage got low has been addressed, which should be especially useful for owners of older iPhones and iPads with not a lot of storage space available to begin with.

The iOS 13.6.1 update is a 110MB download, and should be ready for install right away if you check for it through Settings > General > Software Update. You may have already been notified about it.

This is likely to be among the last updates to iOS 13, seeing as how iOS 14 is due to be released this fall - and probably as soon as next month, if we go by Apple's timelines in years past.

New Apple Privacy Rules for its Mobile Devices

26th August 2020
"iOS 14 is designed to protect people’s privacy."

Facebook is pushing back on new Apple privacy rules for its mobile devices — and putting app developers in the middle.

Apple will soon require apps to ask users for permission to collect data on what devices they are using and to let ads follow them around on the internet. The social network said Wednesday that those rules could reduce what apps can earn by advertising through Facebook’s audience network.

Facebook said it expects “less impact” on its own advertising revenue than on the ad-supported businesses that rely on its audience network to promote their apps. The audience network allows Facebook and Instagram advertisers to place their ads elsewhere on the internet.

Apple says the latest version of its mobile operating system, iOS 14, is designed to protect people’s privacy. It will require apps to ask users for permission to collect and share data using a unique code that identifies their iPhones and iPads. The update is due later this fall.

Facebook said that because of this change, it will no longer collect the identifier for advertisers on its own apps for iOS 14 devices. It is also asking businesses to create new ad accounts dedicated solely to running ads for apps for iOS 14 users in order to comply with Apple’s new rules.

Apple, on the other hand, said it is intent on giving people more choice over how they want to be tracked by companies on the internet — and the ability to say no if they don’t.

David Chavern, CEO of the news-publisher trade group News Media Alliance, said the change is “more annoying than material.” But he added that it could still cost publishers money by making ads on their apps less valuable to advertisers.

The annoying part comes from the loss of revenue at a time when all revenue is important, and the unilateral nature of Apple’s decision,” he said. “They decide and the rest of the world just has to adapt.
