Plague Inc now has free mode where you fight a pandemic

12th November 2020
"The Cure, is developer Ndemic Creations’ attempt to simulate the real-life, multifaceted approach required to stop a pandemic, based on the input it received from real experts."

Plague Inc. — the strategy game about evolving and spreading diseases — received an update yesterday with a new mode that flips the script on its original gameplay. The new mode, titled Plague Inc: The Cure, is developer Ndemic Creations’ attempt to simulate the real-life, multifaceted approach required to stop a pandemic, based on the input it received from real experts.

The game originally launched in 2012 but surged in popularity this March after news of the COVID-19 outbreak spread across the world. The Cure is a response to our current reality, featuring several stages of containing a pandemic, like researching the disease, using techniques like contact tracing, and developing a vaccine. Ndemic stresses that the game shouldn’t be taken as a scientific model, but with the input of experts, it does capture an idea of the kind of response required to stop something like COVID-19.

Ndemic announced a pair of donations in March to the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) and the World Health Organization (WHO) to aid in COVID-19 relief efforts. Discussions around those donations ultimately prompted the development of this new mode, which Ndemic based on input from both organizations.

The resulting mode seems to have successfully integrated that real-life science, producing gameplay that CEPI CEO Richard Hatchett says “encapsulates the complexities of a global pandemic response and highlights how crucial international collaboration is needed to address such a threat.

Ndemic Creations says Plague Inc: The Cure will be free “until COVID-19 is under control.” The new mode is available now on iOS and Android with PC and console releases to follow soon.

Samsung Electronics defies pandemic with profit rise

30th July 2020
"The overall turnover of the wider Samsung group is equivalent to a fifth of South Korea's gross domestic product."

South Korean tech giant Samsung Electronics defied the coronavirus to report higher net profits in the second quarter Thursday, with strong demand for memory chips overcoming the pandemic's impact on smartphone sales.

Long known as the world's biggest smartphone and memory chip maker, it said net profits rose 7.3 percent to 5.56 trillion won ($4.66 billion) in the April-to-June period.

The firm is the flagship subsidiary of the giant Samsung Group, by far the biggest of the family-controlled conglomerates that dominate business in the world's 12th largest economy, and it is crucial to the South's economic health.

The figures -- which beat expectations according to Bloomberg News -- come as the coronavirus pandemic wreaks havoc across the world economy, and with the trade-dependent South having entered a recession for the first time in 17 years due to plunging exports. But lockdowns imposed around the world -- especially in Europe and the US -- have boosted Samsung Electronics' chip business with data centres moving to stockpile DRAM chips to meet surging demand for online activities.

"Even as the spread of COVID-19 caused closures and slowdowns at stores and production sites around the world, the company responded to challenges through its extensive global supply chain," the firm said in a statement. It also minimised the impact of the pandemic by "strengthening online sales channels and optimising costs," it added. Operating profit rose 23.48 percent to 8.15 trillion won, it said, even as sales dropped 5.6 percent to 52.97 trillion won.

The overall turnover of the wider Samsung group is equivalent to a fifth of South Korea's gross domestic product. Analysts said they expect Samsung Electronics' memory chips and television businesses to improve.

Diplomatic and military tensions between India and China could also play in Samsung's favour, analysts said, if Indian consumers choose to shun Chinese brands and opt for Samsung devices instead.

"The growth is likely to drive by memory chips and displays as both of these products are in high demand due to heavy content consumption during the lockdown," Prachir Singh, a senior analyst at market observer Counterpoint, told AFP.

Microsoft cloud business gathers steam as pandemic boosts growth

27th October 2020
"The pandemic is driving people towards Microsoft’s services."

Microsoft saw some big growth in Microsoft Teams at the beginning of the pandemic, and it has kept accelerating over the past six months. During an earnings call with investors today, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella revealed Microsoft Teams now has 115 million daily active users. That’s a more than 50 percent rise from the 75 million that Microsoft reported almost six months ago.

It’s difficult to compare Microsoft’s numbers to its rivals, though. Both Zoom and Google report daily active participants, which means a single user could be counted multiple times through different meetings during a day. Google revealed it has 100 million daily active participants earlier this year, and Zoom said it had 300 million daily active participants. Slack also saw some growth earlier this year.

Microsoft has been steadily improving Teams throughout the pandemic. A new Together Mode was designed specifically for pandemic-era meetings, allowing participants to sit virtually next to each other. The NBA used the Teams feature for basketball games over the summer.

Microsoft has also opened Teams’ doors to third-party apps, made the service available to consumers, and promised features like breakout rooms by the end of the year. Nadella also revealed today that LinkedIn now has 722 million users. LinkedIn has been gradually growing and adding to Microsoft’s revenues since the company acquired the social network for $26 billion back in 2016.
