Wyze announces $20 smartwatch with nine-day battery life

23rd October 2021
"With heart rate and blood oxygen saturation tracking"

Wyze, the smart home company best known for its range of budget internet-connected security cameras, has announced its debut smartwatch. The Wyze Watch will be available in two sizes — 44mm and 47mm — when it ships in the US in February 2021, and like the rest of the company’s lineup, it’s priced affordably at $20. Wyze’s announcement follows the release of the company’s first fitness tracker, the $25 Wyze Band, earlier this year.

The watch will ship with a fairly standard selection of smartwatch features, including blood oxygen monitoring, heart rate tracking, IP68 water, and dust resistance rating, nine-day battery life, activity, and sleep tracking, and integration with Google Fit and Apple Health. However, the watch will also integrate with Wyze’s other devices; the company promises that it’ll support shortcuts to let you control products like its smart bulbs. It can also display your notifications, allowing you to read email previews and texts, though Wyze’s press release doesn’t explicitly say which mobile operating systems the watch works with.

In terms of specs, the 44mm Wyze Watch has a 1.4-inch LCD display with a resolution of 320 x 320 and a 260mAh battery. The 47mm version has a 1.75-inch LCD display with a resolution of 320 x 385 and a 300mAh battery. Both have 16MB of storage. Neither offer GPS tracking or support for voice assistants.

It’s hard to see Wyze beating out competition from the likes of Apple or Samsung when it’s pricing its debut smartwatch at just $20. But if it can deliver on its modest promises to offer a simple, functional experience, then the Wyze Watch could become an attractive first smartwatch.

The Wyze Watch is available to preorder starting today.

Two possible designs for Realme Smartwatch

25th August 2020
"Realme is working on new smartwatch designs."

Realme is working on new smartwatch designs, two of which were filed with the Chinese Patent Office. The company’s first model, the Realme Watch was announced a month ago and these new designs share a lot of similarities with it. For starters, both are square.

In fact, this first design appears identical at first glance, but a closer examination does reveal some differences. The display appears to be a tad smaller and the button is higher up. Also, the sensor bump on the back is now square.

Moving on to the second design, this one brings a bit of color to the front for a two-tone look. Also, the button on the side is round, which may indicate that it’s a crown (meaning you can rotate it).

Both have different straps – one with a buckle and one push-to-fit – but the original Watch also came with different straps depending on the region.

It’s not clear if either of these designs will make it to market - these could just be early iterations of the current Watch.

Garmin adds pregnancy tracking to Connect app

10th November 2020
"It’s a long-requested smartwatch feature"

Garmin is adding pregnancy tracking to its smartwatches and Connect app. The feature will let users track pregnancy-related symptoms like fatigue and monitor their progress toward their due date. It will also let them pause updates on their training status, which typically uses metrics like the amount someone exercises to classify their fitness level and progress.

The feature will also let users adjust heart rate alerts (heart rate can increase during pregnancy) and change hydration goals. An additional app will let users monitor contractions during labor.

Pregnant users have criticized smartwatch and wearable companies in the past for not including pregnancy modes on the devices. Apple Watches would continue to nudge people to close their Activity rings, for example, even if doctors told them to limit exercise. Swapna Krishna wrote about her frustrations with the alerts back in 2018 in Engadget. “I couldn’t tell the app, ‘Hey, this is actually what is healthy for me right now,’ and because of that it had become completely useless,” she said. “More than that, it’d become a constant source of anxiety, reminding me that I wanted to be more active than I was physically able to be.”

Posts on Fitbit’s feature suggestions board dating back to 2013 ask for the company to include a pregnancy setting. Both Apple and Fitbit users can (finally) track their menstrual cycles but still can’t note a pregnancy, which would skew the cycle tracking data. Withings has a pregnancy tracker that works with its smart scale, allowing users to monitor weight gain during the course of their pregnancy. “Helping people understand what’s natural, what you can do, and what you should talk to a doctor about is really important,Susie Felber, global content director of Withings, told Krishna in 2018.

The Garmin pregnancy feature will allow users to keep using their smartwatch during the course of their pregnancy. “It’s our hope that this pregnancy tracking feature helps women make sense of how their pregnancy ties into their active lifestyles and overall well-being,” Susan Lyman, Garmin vice president of global consumer marketing, said in a press release.
