WhatsApp making it easier with new storage management tool

2nd November 2020
"Helping you quickly identify and bulk delete files"

WhatsApp has redesigned its storage management tool, making it easier for users to find and delete files that are taking up too much space on their phone. The new tool will be “rolling out to users worldwide this week,” says the Facebook-owned company, and will be available in the app by heading to Settings > Storage and data > Manage storage.

The current WhatsApp “Storage Usage” tool simply sorts all available chats by the amount of space they take up, listing the number of messages, photos, GIFs, and videos in each chat, and letting the user delete each category with a few taps. This is handy but doesn’t give users a way to browse the content they’re removing. That’s important if you need to clear out, say, a family group chat, and want to avoid deleting any important photos.

The new tool, by comparison, offers thumbnails of content to be deleted, and groups this data in categories including “Forwarded many times” and “Larger than 5 MB.” That should make it easier for users to identify content that they don’t need or want anymore, and that can simply be deleted. You can see a preview of the new tool in action here whatsapp storage management clip .

Reliance Jio-Facebook Pact: JioMart, WhatsApp to operate together to connect consumers with local kiranas

21st April 2020
"Reliance Jio will receive an investment of INR 43,574 crores from Facebook."

Facebook will buy a 10 per cent stake in the digital business of India's Reliance Industries for INR 43,574 crores, as the social media firm looks to leverage its highly popular WhatsApp chat service to offer digital payment services. The deal will help the Indian conglomerate cut debt that has piled up in its expensive push to secure top spot for its Jio Infocomm telecom business.

WhatsApp is trying to secure approval to roll out its digital payment service in India, which will see it compete in a crowded market with the likes of Google Pay and Paytm. The approval to expand beyond the beta launch hasn't come through yet.

"(India) is in the middle of a major digital transformation and organizations like Jio have played a big part in getting hundreds of millions of Indian people and small businesses online," Facebook founder CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a post.

The messaging service has 40 crore users in India, its biggest market, reaching nearly 80 per cent of smartphone users in the country. The deal will also help the social media giant leverage WhatsApp to partner with Reliance's e-commerce marketplace JioMart, that connects small businesses to customers.

Jio has become the country's largest wireless operator within about three years of its launch, Mumbai-headquartered Reliance has also rapidly expanded its retail business, which now has over 10,000 stores selling groceries, consumer electronics and apparel.

WhatsApp users can now submit bug reports from the app

14th October 2020
"WhatsApp is now making it easier for its users to file bug reports directly from the messaging app."

WhatsApp is now making it easier for its users to file bug reports directly from the messaging app. Among all the new features that WhatsApp seems to be working on, this new feature appeared on the latest beta update for Android. However, the feature can only be accessed and used by the beta testers. The messaging app is currently working on it and will make the feature public once the testing is over.

As per Wabetainfo, the WhatsApp is working on a feature to bring in-app support for bug filing. “WhatsApp is currently developing a feature that allows communicating with the technical support within the app! The first time you can contact the support within WhatsApp Settings and a new section will be available,” Wabetainfo report read.

The WhatsApp features a tracker has stated that the new bugs report file feature would be available under the new Contact us page. Users will also get an option of including device information from if he is reporting issues with the app. “In this section, the user will be able to add the report filling that text field, and he can choose to include device information if he is reporting issues. Device information like system details and logs can help WhatsApp to investigate, giving the best answer for you,” Wabetainfo report states.

The user will get a reply from WhatsApp in a WhatsApp Support chat, which will allow him to communicate with the technician. Once the conversation is over, WhatsApp will automatically mark the chat as closed. The features tracker reports that once the chat with the technician is over, the chat will be automatically marked as closed.

However, for now, WhatsApp has an email address ([email protected]) in which users can submit bug reports and other complaints. But when the in-app support is rolled out, users will find it easier to file bug reports.
