Lenovo profit beats expectations, helped by remote working trend

2nd November 2020
"It is continuing to benefit from “new normal” remote working after COVID-19."

China’s Lenovo Group, the world’s biggest PC maker, posted a better-than-expected quarterly profit on Tuesday and said it is continuing to benefit from “new normal” remote working after COVID-19. The Chinese giant said it set new records for group revenue, pre-tax income, and net income, and all three key business groups delivered year-on-year growth for the first time in six quarters.

Last quarter was what I would call a perfect quarter for Lenovo,” Chairman Yang Yuanqing told Reuters in a post-results interview. “I hope the current quarter could be even better,” he said.

Lenovo reported a 53% jump in net profit for the quarter ended September to $310 million, beating the average analyst estimate of $224 million, according to Refinitiv data. Revenue increased by 7% to $14.5 billion.

With the pandemic forcing companies worldwide to seek work-from-home options and people preferring to stay indoors, the company expects to benefit from increased sales of PCs and tablets. “Our gaming PCs and our thin-and-light PCs actually grow margin faster than other products,” said Yang.

According to research firm Gartner, worldwide shipments of personal computers rose 3.6% in the July-September quarter, due to home entertainment and distance learning needs, along with the strongest growth the U.S. PC market has seen in 10 years. Yang predicted a further 5% to 10% industry-wide increase in the total addressable market for PCs next year.

Lenovo strengthened its lead in PCs with 25.7% of the market, ahead of HP Inc and Dell Technologies which had 21.6% and 15.2% share, respectively. “The issue is not demand, it supplies. If we can fill enough supply, we can sell more products,” he said. Yang said a component supply shortage, particularly for display and integrated circuit, is keeping the company from meeting 100% customer demand.

The leaks have suggested that the phone will come with support for 90W fast charging and Snapdragon 865 SoC. It claims that the Lenovo Legion gaming phone may come with a 144Hz display, dual rear cameras, and a USB Type-C port. Lenovo sails past expectations with 31% first-quarter profit jump

12th August 2020
"Net profit came in at $213 million for the April-June quarter, nearly double market estimates while revenue grew 7% to $13.3 billion."

Lenovo Group, the world’s biggest PC maker, smashed expectations with a 31% leap in first-quarter net profit, as the coronavirus pandemic spurs businesses to shift to remote work and schools to switch to online learning.

Consumers stuck at home are also spending more on PCs and other smart devices for entertainment purposes, the Chinese giant said.

Net profit came in at $213 million for the April-June quarter, nearly double market estimates while revenue grew 7% to $13.3 billion.

In particular, China sales surged, climbing 17% while those in Europe, the Middle East and Africa jumped 28%. Sales in the Americas, however, dropped 9%, hit by declining demand for smartphones in Latin America and a shortage of components for Chromebooks in North America.

“Chinese government is driving domestic consumption - for sure we should leverage that to grow our business. Last quarter results can prove that we have a very strong position in China,” Lenovo Chairman Yang Yuanqing told a briefing.

Yang told Reuters in a later interview that demand still had far more room to grow in China, where the penetration rate for PCs was still somewhere between 20% and 30% compared to that in the United States of 70%.

He said Lenovo’s sales during China’s June 18 shopping festival - which is heavily promoted by e-commerce platforms - had doubled over the previous year. “We really see the strong rebound after the COVID-19,” he said.

According to research firm Gartner, worldwide shipments of personal computers rose 2.8% in the April-June quarter, as vendors restocked their channels and mobile PC demand increased.
