Google, Google IO, Smart Canvas, Google Workplace

19th May 2021
"Google announced 12 new features for its Google Workspace at the Google IO 2021"

Google announced 12 new features for its Google Workspace at the Google IO 2021. Initiated by a keynote from Google CEO Sundar Pichai mentioning the global struggle due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Pichai went on to highlight new updates from Google across its products, one of which is Google Workspaces.

The new features will be rolled out across the apps of Google Workspace, including Docs, Sheets, and Slides, by the end of this year. Here’s a brief look the updates:

1. Smart Canvas: Google has introduced new smart chips in Docs for recommending files and meetings in a shared document. To insert smart chips, users will simply have to type "@" to see a list of recommended people, files and meetings. Smart chips will also come to Sheets in the coming months.

2. Google Docs gets a pageless format that will allow users to remove the boundaries of a page. This will enable them to create a surface that expands to whatever device or screen they are using, with a simple option to switch back to a paginated view.

3. Emoji reactions in Docs, so multiple people working on a document can react to updates as they work together. It will be rolled out in a few months.

4. Assisted writing features will be brought to Google Workspace to offer more inclusive language recommendations as well as stylistic suggestions to users while typing to help speed up both writing and editing.

5. A new Docs template will automatically import any relevant information from a Calendar meeting invite, including smart chips for attendees and attached files.

6. Starting this week, Google is pushing out checklists on web and mobile versions of Docs. This will allow users to assign checklist items to other people and see these action items in Google Tasks. This will in turn make it easier for everyone to manage a project’s To Do list.

7. Google will soon introduce table templates in Docs. These can help gather team feedback through topic-voting tables and mark milestones and statuses through project-tracker tables.

8. Google will now allow you to present your content to a Google Meet call on the web directly from the Doc, Sheet, or Slide. This will eliminate the need to jump between collaborating in a document and a live conversation on Google Meet. Google will also bring Google Meet directly to Docs, Sheets, and Slides in the coming fall.

9. Google is introducing live translations of captions later this year. The translation will start with English-language live captions translated into Spanish, Portuguese, French, or German, as many more languages will follow.

10. For Google Sheets, the company is introducing timeline view to make tracking tasks easier and faster. This view allows users to organize data by owner, category, campaign, or whichever attribute fits best.

11. Google will also add more assisted analysis functionality in Sheets web experience. This will include formula suggestions for faster data analysis and reduced errors.

12. Teams will now be able to jump from a discussion in Google Chat directly to creating and editing Sheets and Docs from Google Chat rooms. Google will also enable this for Slides in the coming weeks.

Microsoft and Google Join Forces to Fix Compatibility Issues Across Browsers

25th March 2021
"Microsoft and Google are jointly working together to make things easier for Web developers while building a website."

Chrome Developers tweeted on Monday that Microsoft and Google jointly announced #Compat2021 to resolve major issues faced by Web developers regarding compatibility across browsers. Google listed the five main issues on its Google Developers blog that Web developers face while building a website.

The information for the same was gathered through a Google project called Web Developer Satisfaction, or DevSAT.

The project will also invite the Web developer community to report for bugs or missing items that they encounter.

Microsoft and Google are jointly working together to make things easier for Web developers while building a website. The main issue faced by Web developers is the compatibility of their website across browsers.

The partnership is dubbed #Compat2021 and is aimed at resolving five main issues for browser compatibility issues. These five areas are CSS Flexbox, CSS Grid, position: sticky, aspect-ratio, and CSS transforms. The project is also inviting Web developers to contribute.

CSS Flexbox is a tool that helps developers align images on their webpage. The issue here is with the auto-align function that malfunctions due to which images are incorrectly proportioned across different browsers.

If you're interested in keeping tabs on the update of the developments, it can be done on the Compat 2021 dashboard.

Google IO: Android 12 with Material You design announced, coming to Pixel phones soon

19th May 2021
"Google IO 2021 has begun, and Google has already announced a slew of updates to its various services"

Google IO 2021 has begun, and Google has already announced a slew of updates to its various services. The most anticipated of these were the updates to Google Android's next version. With the release of its first-ever Beta version, Google has now given us a hint at what to expect from Android 12 as the first note of the IO event.

Google hinted at some of the features that will be available on Android smartphones in future OS updates when it announced the first beta of Android 12. More personalization options for users, simplified interactions, improved accessibility features, and increased privacy features will be included.

Starting today, Android 12 Beta will be available on Pixel and other devices such as those from OnePlus and Xiaomi. Here are the changes we can anticipate on the same - According to Google, Android 12 includes "the most significant design change in Android's history." This was made possible by the company's redesign of the entire experience, "from the colors to the shapes, light, and motion."

Users will be able to completely personalize their phones with a custom color palette and redesigned widgets with Android 12. Using color extraction, the system will automatically determine the dominant colors on the user's set wallpaper and suggest a color palette based on those findings.

These colors will then be applied to the entire operating system, including the notification shade, lock screen, volume controls, new widgets, and other features.

These design changes are being implemented by Google through a collaboration of its software, hardware, and Material Design teams. The Material You project unifies its software and hardware ecosystems under a single design language.

Improved Animations and Usability

'Google has worked on the motion and animations on Android 12 to provide its users with a more fluid experience. These changes will be visible on tap, swipe, and scroll, for example, when users dismiss their notifications on the lock screen, the clock will grow larger to indicate that they are all caught up.

Google has also reimagined important phone spaces such as the notification shade, quick settings, and the power button in Android 12 to make it easier for users to get things done.

For example, the notification shade is more intuitive and playful, with a clear, at-a-glance view of app notifications. Quick Settings, on the other hand, will allow users to control virtually the entire operating system with a swipe and a tap. Google Pay and Home Controls will now be available in these settings.

With a long press on the power button, Android 12 will also be able to summon Google Assistant.

Performance enhancements

Android 12 will also make devices faster and more responsive, as well as improve power efficiency. Google claims that users will be able to use their Android 12 devices for longer periods of time without needing to charge them than previous Android smartphones.

Google accomplished this through some under-the-hood improvements, such as reducing the CPU time required for core system services by up to 22% and reducing the system server's use of large cores by up to 15%.

Increased Privacy Protection

Android 12 introduces new features that provide users with greater transparency into which apps are accessing their data, as well as greater control over this data collection. A new Privacy Dashboard, for example, will provide a unified view of permissions settings as well as what data is accessed, how frequently, and by which apps. From the dashboard, users will also be able to easily revoke app permissions.

When apps access the microphone or camera, a new indicator at the top right of the status bar will notify users. Two new toggles in Quick Settings will also assist in removing app access to these sensors across the entire system.

Android 12 will also include new approximate location permissions, which will allow apps to see only the user's approximate location rather than a precise one. Weather apps, for example, do not require a precise location to provide an accurate forecast.
