Do you know the most used smartwatches features?

30th December 2020
"The user experience is improved by these new features. Here are some of the top smartwatch features."

The demand for smartwatches is highly crowded. As a result, in an attempt to remain ahead of rivals, manufacturers continue to evolve existing features and introduce new ones. This continuous innovation is a plus for the consumer since smartwatches have a wide variety of applications.

smartwatch

Notifications and Alerts:

Alerts and updates are probably the most popular smartwatch aspect. Several other functions depend on its ability to deliver required updates to consumers. These notifications may be from apps and connected devices alike, which could include company-related announcements or social media channel updates, and more. Smartwatches may accept two kinds of notifications: notifications that mirror alerts on a connected device or notifications specially tailored for the smartwatch. The smartwatch is normally a standalone system enabled with cellular communication with a SIM in order to obtain the latter.

Time-related features:

Smartwatches are known to be smart devices because of their capabilities, but these gadgets are also simply watches. In addition to saying the time, smartwatches come with extra time-related features, including stopwatches and alarm clocks. For smartwatch users who are using their watches for exercise events, stopwatches/timers and alarm clocks are particularly useful. It is important to remember, though, that many smartwatches do not come with speakers. In such situations, after set time intervals have passed, they depend on vibrations to alert users.

Characteristics in fitness and wellness:

Another common set of features used by a number of smartwatch users are fitness- and wellness-related features. Several smartwatches will serve as fitness trackers. Which contain traits like:

  • Monitors of heart rates
  • The Pedometers
  • Trackers of Physical Activity (for running, swimming, cycling, etc.)
  • Monitors of blood pressure
  • Monitors of sleep
  • Tracking distances with a smartwatch.

These features are intended to provide an additional glimpse into everyday workout habits to smartwatch users. The ability to keep tabs on fitness habits is also eased by these features.

Call/messaging Feature set:

This can be achieved in two ways: using the smartwatch as a proxy to answer a call and then communicating from a handset, or making the call directly from the smartwatch if the smartwatch comes with cellular connection capability. New generation smartwatches allow users to make and receive calls. This role is really common with users because if they are geographically distant from their phones, it helps them to retain communication.

Fitbit adds Google Assistant support to Sense and Versa 3 smartwatches

21st October 2021
"Plus automatic SpO2 tracking at night, and new phonecall functionality"

Google Assistant support is coming to the Fitbit Sense and Fitbit Versa 3 thanks to a new update rolling out starting today in the US. Alongside it, Fitbit OS 5.1 also adds new blood oxygen monitoring features, support for audible replies from Alexa, and enhancements to the watches’ calling and messaging features.

Both smartwatches already support Amazon’s Alexa, but with the addition of Google Assistant Fitbit says they’re becoming the first smartwatches to offer a built-in choice between the two voice assistants. Support for Google Assistant has been on the cards since the company announced the smartwatches earlier this year. It’s unlikely that these will be the last Fitbit devices to support Google’s voice assistant, given the search giant is currently in the process of buying Fitbit. If you want to switch which voice assistant you use, Fitbit says you can do so from the companion app.

ALEXA IS ALSO GETTING SOME UPDATES

That doesn’t mean Fitbit is ignoring its Alexa functionality, however. Fitbit OS 5.1 also adds the ability for Alexa to audibly reply to your queries via the smartwatch’s speaker, rather than just displaying its responses onscreen.

The watches’ calling and messaging functionality is also being improved with the update. The Fitbit Versa 3 and Sense can now answer calls directly when a phone is nearby using their built-in speakers and microphones. Previously the watches could be used to accept or reject calls, but users still had to speak into the phone itself. Fitbit also says the watches will now support voice-to-text commands for responding to text messages on Android.

Finally, the watches’ SpO2 blood oxygen tracking is receiving some improvements, with Fitbit saying you’ll no longer need to use a special clock face to see blood oxygen data. However, if you’re someone that does want to get this information from a watch face, the company says it has new SpO2 clock faces coming to the watches by the end of the year.

Wyze announces $20 smartwatch with nine-day battery life

23rd October 2021
"With heart rate and blood oxygen saturation tracking"

Wyze, the smart home company best known for its range of budget internet-connected security cameras, has announced its debut smartwatch. The Wyze Watch will be available in two sizes — 44mm and 47mm — when it ships in the US in February 2021, and like the rest of the company’s lineup, it’s priced affordably at $20. Wyze’s announcement follows the release of the company’s first fitness tracker, the $25 Wyze Band, earlier this year.

The watch will ship with a fairly standard selection of smartwatch features, including blood oxygen monitoring, heart rate tracking, IP68 water, and dust resistance rating, nine-day battery life, activity, and sleep tracking, and integration with Google Fit and Apple Health. However, the watch will also integrate with Wyze’s other devices; the company promises that it’ll support shortcuts to let you control products like its smart bulbs. It can also display your notifications, allowing you to read email previews and texts, though Wyze’s press release doesn’t explicitly say which mobile operating systems the watch works with.

In terms of specs, the 44mm Wyze Watch has a 1.4-inch LCD display with a resolution of 320 x 320 and a 260mAh battery. The 47mm version has a 1.75-inch LCD display with a resolution of 320 x 385 and a 300mAh battery. Both have 16MB of storage. Neither offer GPS tracking or support for voice assistants.

It’s hard to see Wyze beating out competition from the likes of Apple or Samsung when it’s pricing its debut smartwatch at just $20. But if it can deliver on its modest promises to offer a simple, functional experience, then the Wyze Watch could become an attractive first smartwatch.

The Wyze Watch is available to preorder starting today.

Google wins EU approval to take over fitbit for $2.1 billion

18th December 2020
"Google wins fitbit deal after agreeing restrictions on how it will use customers’health related data"

Alphabet’s Google took over European Unions' antitrust approval for its $2.1 billion bid for Fitbit( a company that produces wearable fitness trackers and watches ) after the tech titan agreed to conditions including not using health data from European users for advertising.

When Google announced the acquisition in November 2019, Google hardware chief Rick Osterloh said that the Fitbit purchase was “an opportunity to invest even more in Wear OS as well as introduce Made by Google wearable devices into the market.” But regulators quickly got involved, and in August, they formally began investigating Google’s purchase of Fitbit over data privacy and antitrust concerns.

The deal had triggered criticism from privacy advocates on both sides of the Atlantic, consumer organizations, and Google rivals about the company’s market power and the use of people’s health data in targeted advertising.

Once Fitbit was a leader in the wearable devices market. But in recent years it has lost market share to Apple, Xiaomi, Samsung, and Huawei.

The European Commission said it had agreed on concessions with Google, valid for 10 years with the possibility of another 10-year extension, addressing competition concerns.

For the approval of the deal, Google has agreed to a number of concessions to ease EU concerns. Among the concessions, Google has agreed not to use Fitbit data, including GPS and health data, gathered from any user in the European Economic Area (EEA) for targeted advertising. Also, Google will store Fitbit user's data separately from Google's data used for advertising, and will not use data from Fitbit for GoogleAds. Users can store their health data either in their Google or Fitbit accounts.

The tech giant is said to maintain access to users’ health and fitness data to software applications through Fitbit Web API software, without charging for access.

Google says that it believes this deal will encourage the innovation of wearable devices and enable them to build products that will help people lead healthier lives.
