In the wake of the surge in the coronavirus cases following the relaxed lockdown, the government has decided to enforce the scheme of odd-even restriction in public and private vehicles from Thursday. The rule is imposed in the Kathmandu Valley and the districts with more than 200 active cases of the coronavirus.

The public and private vehicles except the ones used for essential service will operate based on the odd-even scheme, according to the Home Ministry. Similarly, all passenger buses entering the federal capital, Kathmandu, will be prohibited from 7:00 pm to 7:00 am.

Ministry Spokesperson Chakra Bahadur Budha shared that there will be no vehicles operating in the districts with over 200 active cases of coronavirus from 9:00 pm to 5:00 am. 

"As per the decision of the government of Nepal, it is strictly prohibited to enter the international border checkpoints except for the persons who have been granted entry permit, group banquets, parties, seminars or other gatherings in hotels and restaurants are prohibited," said a statement issued by spokesperson Budha.

 Similarly, after analyzing the risk of infection of Covid-19, the district COVID-19 Crisis Management Center will decide to close the risk areas immediately and make arrangements for further testing of Covid-19, the ministry said. He further informed that those violating the safety standard set by the Home Ministry and Health Ministry will face stringent action.

Generally, the piled-up stocks are sold because there are people who had plans to buy a two-wheeler but couldn’t due to the unforeseeable circumstances. COVID-19 has taught us that at least a bike or scooter is a must for a family to commute in times of crisis. We have experienced times where we have had no access to public transport. A two-wheeler is an affordable option for commuting instead of using public transportation.”

The lockdown has been lifted and public transportations are on service, however, COVID-19 has not yet disappeared and cases are rapidly increasing day by day. In such a case, a means of transportation is essential for daily commuting and avoiding public transport and maintaining social distance.

3) Risk of Ride-Sharing

Even though ride-sharing is less risky in comparison to public transport and easily accessible with one single touch in their app, we have no idea where the rider has been before coming in touch with us and who has s/he touched. The private vehicle has now become a necessity.

4) Even-Odd system

The even-odd system has been lifted for the time being, but we have experienced the hurdles it brings when there is only one bike or scooter at home. One of the two-wheeler owners states that he only had an odd number plate bike and he is now planning to buy a scooter with even number plate so that it is convenient for him to commute in both odd and even days whenever necessary.

The bike dealers and sellers are offering attractive schemes that make the two-wheelers a very affordable option of means of transportation.
