Ola Electric is recalling 1,441 electric scooters for inspection after an incident last month in Pune where one of its vehicles caught fire.
"Our internal investigation into the March 26 vehicle fire incident in Pune is ongoing and the preliminary assessment reveals that the thermal incident was likely an isolated one," the company said in a press statement on Sunday.
“As a pre-emptive measure, we will be conducting a detailed diagnostics and health check of the scooters in that specific batch and therefore are issuing a voluntary recall of 1,441 vehicles,” it said.
The move comes as the government is planning to penalise companies for quality lapses in the manufacturing of electric vehicles, after several incidents where electric scooters have caught fire.
Ola said the recalled scooters would be inspected by its service engineers and would go through a “thorough diagnostics across all battery systems, thermal systems as well as the safety systems”.
Ola Electric becomes the third electric vehicle maker to announce recalls following more than two dozen fire incidents that have dented the confidence in the burgeoning electric vehicle industry in the country.
Dealers have been terminating contracts, and customers cancelling bookings and seeking refunds, shortening waiting periods.
Okinawa was the first Indian EV company to recall, by taking back 3,215 Okinawa Praise Pro electric scooters.
This was followed by Pure EV, which recalled around 2,000 electric scooters.
