Samsung new opportunities as pandemic ignites demand for home appliances

1st September 2020
"consumers have been willing to splurge on products that make their homes cleaner."

From sanitizing closets to customizable fridges, the coronavirus pandemic has fanned demand for home appliances - so much so that Samsung Electronics Co Ltd (005930.KS) is adding warehouses and bringing popular products to more markets.

In particular, consumers have been willing to splurge on products that make their homes cleaner.

In Brazil and other emerging economies, households which once relied on maids are now investing in dishwashers and robot vacuum cleaners, while Samsung says its overseas sales of air purifiers jumped more than five times in January-July compared to the same period last year.

Samsung’s AirDresser, a closet that steam cleans clothes and kills bacteria, has seen a spike in sales with British furniture firm Lux Group ordering 1,000 earlier this year. Big fridges have also climbed in popularity as people cooking more often at home seek more freezer space.

“Sales are doing well in all but a few countries,” Lee Jae-Seung, executive vice president of Samsung Electronics’ digital appliance business, told Reuters in an interview.

He said factories for Samsung’s appliances business in the United States, Mexico, Poland, India and other countries were running at full capacity and the company was seeking more warehouse space in the United States, South Korea and Europe.

“There was a lot of pent-up demand in the U.S and elsewhere,” Lee said. He added that many consumers seemed willing to spend money they might have otherwise used on trips and outdoor activities to upgrade their household interiors.

In its home market, Samsung’s “Bespokerefrigerators drove its fridge sales up 30% in the first half from the same period a year ago. The fridges, which come in a wide range of compartment sizes, panel types and colors that can be mixed and matched, were launched in China and Russia this year and will be sold in northern Europe from October.

Samsung does not disclose home appliance earnings, but according to UBS, it's home appliance business made an operating profit of 337 billion won ($284.48 million) in the April-June quarter, up about 30% from a year earlier according to Seoul-based KTB Securities.

Samsung's AirDresser for your Clothes Care

20th January 2020
"“AirDresser is Samsung’s response to consumer demand for more dynamic performance from even basic appliances, providing an easy and effective home solution to meet their needs for clean clothes that smell fresh, are germ-free and look neat.”"

Samsung Electronics announced the global launch of its innovative AirDresser in markets around the world. Samsung’s latest home innovation uses powerful air and steam to remove dust and germs, refreshing and sanitizing clothes to provide easy and convenient garment care.

“Samsung is once again elevating modern life by transforming how we care for our clothes at home, giving consumers more freedom to spend their time doing things they want to do,” said Jennifer Song, Vice President of the Digital Appliances Business at Samsung Electronics. “AirDresser is Samsung’s response to consumer demand for more dynamic performance from even basic appliances, providing an easy and effective home solution to meet their needs for clean clothes that smell fresh, are germ-free and look neat.”

Samsung AirDresser Refreshes Your Clothes Thoroughly

Once a garment is hung inside the unit, the user can initiate the cycle and simply wait for the system to run its course: The Jet Air and Air Hangers release powerful air to loosen and remove engrained dust, with only minimal noise and vibration, quiet enough for anywhere inside the home, including the bedroom.

Then, the JetSteam sanitizes the garments to get rid of the bacteria, viruses, and allergens.* Infusing high-temperature steam deep into the fabric, JetSteam is the perfect tool for routine sterilization of clothes and many other household items such as linen and soft toys.

AirDresser also uses its Deodorizing Filter function to freshen clothes, breaking down the odor-causing particles caused by sweat, tobacco, and food, while preventing unpleasant smells from building up inside the unit. Meanwhile, Self Clean technology dehumidifies, sanitizes, and deodorizes the interior of the AirDresser without requiring harsh or costly detergents by cleaning with a combination of heat, air, and steam. It even notifies users whenever it needs cleaning every 40 cycles.

Samsung AirDresser Grooms Your Wardrobe Well

AirDresser also ensures clothes are groomed gently, increasing their lifespan by helping consumers avoid washing their favorite items too frequently, which can cause damage to the delicate fabric. Heatpump Drying gently dries clothes at a low temperature, minimizing heat damage and shrinkage. And with Wrinkle Care, the AirDresser can smooth out wrinkles without ironing by using a combination of steam and air to relax the clothes.

Samsung AirDresser can also handle delicate materials such as fur, which usually requires professional service. Fur care dehumidifies 90% of the moisture trapped in fur, which increases its volume by 78% and helps maintain its original condition, thus extending its lifespan.** As a result, it can keep a wide variety of items made of fur, including coats, wraps, or shawls, looking their best for much longer.

The unit even keeps clothes outside the unit to stay in optimal conditions. The Dehumidification feature draws in air from the room, extracting moisture while pushing out dry air.

Samsung AirDresser Saves You Time and Money

AirDresser can also save consumers time and money when they incorporate it into their daily routines. For example, operating a complete washer-and-dryer process with just one or two items per load or going to the dry cleaners frequently is not time or cost-efficient. So, using the JetSteam to sanitize and deodorize your clothes for a quick refresh makes sense. And with Jet Air and Air Hangers able to quickly remove dust off of clothes, you can confidently re-wear outfits without worrying about bad odors or hygiene. Heatpump Drying also reduces drying time with a more effective heat transfer method.

And with the AI-powered capabilities that SmartThings provides, you can enjoy better clothing care and easier maintenance. Home Care Wizard remotely identifies problems and provides a troubleshooting service, while My Closet stores details of your clothes and suggests the best courses for them.

Samsung AirDresser Enrich Your Day-to-Day

Combining the technology with modern design, AirDresser offers a sleek frame that blends flawlessly in any contemporary living space. In Quiet Mode, AirDresser can be run overnight without disturbing sleep and, for added convenience, it features portable water containers for steam at the bottom, so it doesn’t require a water supply or drainage system. This also means the unit can easily be installed anywhere most suitable for the user. Samsung AirDresser lets consumers refresh their clothes every day in the comfort of their own home.

Samsung’s 6G White Paper Lays Out the Company’s Vision for the Next Generation of Communications Technology

13th July 2020
"Samsung defines three categories of requirements that have to be met to realize 6G services – performance, architectural, and trustworthiness requirements."

Samsung’s vision for 6G is to bring the next hyper-connected experience to every corner of life. To accelerate research for 6G, Samsung Research, the advanced R&D hub within Samsung Electronics’ SET Business, founded its Advanced Communications Research Center in May of last year.

Samsung released a white paper entitled “The Next Hyper-Connected Experience for All.” outlining the company’s vision for the next generation communication system, namely 6G. The white paper covers various aspects related to 6G, including technical and societal megatrends, new services, requirements, candidate technologies, and an expected timeline of standardization.

Samsung 6G network research

In the white paper, Samsung expects that the completion of the 6G standard and its earliest commercialization date could be as early as 2028, while mass commercialization may occur around 2030. Both humans and machines will be the main users of 6G, and 6G will be characterized by the provision of advanced services such as truly immersive extended reality (XR), high-fidelity mobile hologram, and digital replica.

“While 5G commercialization is still in its initial stage, it’s never too early to start preparing for 6G because it typically takes around 10 years from the start of research to commercialization of a new generation of communications technology,” explained Sunghyun Choi, Head of the Advanced Communications Research Center. “We’ve already launched the research and development of 6G technologies by building upon the experience and ability we have accumulated from working on multiple generations of communications technology, including 5G. Going forward, we are committed to leading the standardization of 6G in collaboration with various stakeholders across industry, academia, and government fields.”

Samsung 6G network research

Whereas 5G requirements mainly focused on performance aspects, Samsung defines three categories of requirements that have to be met to realize 6G services – performance, architectural, and trustworthiness requirements. Examples of 6G performance requirements are a peak data rate of 1,000 Gbps (gigabits per second) and air latency less than 100 microseconds (μs), 50 times the peak data rate, and one-tenth the latency of 5G.

The white paper also introduces candidate technologies that could be essential to satisfy the requirements for 6G. These include the use of the terahertz (THz) frequency band, novel antenna technologies to enhance the coverage of high-frequency band signals, advanced duplex technologies, the evolution of network topology, spectrum sharing to increase the efficiency of frequency utilization and the use of AI in wireless communications.

The architectural requirements of 6G include resolving the issues arising from the limited computation capability of mobile devices as well as implementing AI right from the initial phase of technology development and enabling the flexible integration of new network entities. The trustworthiness requirement addresses the security and privacy issues arising from the widespread use of user data and AI technologies.
