Toyota Group Tops Global Auto Sales In 2020 For First Time In Five Years
"Toyota said it sold 9.53 million units worldwide last year."
For the first time in five years, Toyota Motor Corp group ranked top for global car sales in 2020, on a rapid rise in sales in China and the United States, surpassing Germany's Volkswagen AG.
Toyota said it sold 9.53 million units worldwide last year, including those sold by its group's Daihatsu Motor Co. and truck manufacturer Hino Motors Ltd., 11.3 percent down overall from a year earlier. That compares with 9.31 million from VW, down 15.2% from a year earlier.
The Japanese auto giant experienced less impact than other carmakers from the current coronavirus pandemic.
Global annual sales of Toyota reported their first decline in five years, after falling sharply in the April to June quarter due to the pandemic's global economic impacts.
Nevertheless, they recovered from the fall in its key markets such as China and the United States,
A Toyota official said that compared to other automakers, the company's aggressive sales strategy led to reasonably solid sales in 2020.“Our sales dropped from a year earlier amid the pandemic, but the decline was limited to around a 10% level,” the official said.
According to the European Automobile Manufacturers Association, VW has a large presence in the European Union, where passenger car sales dropped by a 'unprecedented' 24 percent to less than 10 million units in 2020.
On the other hand, Toyota has a greater presence in the U.S., where overall car sales dropped in 2020 by just 15 percent. Global sales of the Japanese automaker were down 11 percent . Although the U.S. has the most deaths and cases from COVID-19, there have not been the same lockdowns as in Europe.
Since 2015, VW has outsold Toyota every year prior to 2020. But, according to analysts, the performance of the two firms last year may be reflective of a longer-term pattern.
Toyota will continue to enjoy good sales in its core Japan and U.S. markets, analyst Yoshiaki Kawano said. It should "put up a good fight" in China, the world's largest car market, by bringing out more EVs and SUVs in line with local demand, he said.
