Toyota unveils a compact SUV with a battery

19th April 2021
"They plan to produce the bZ4X in Japan and China and sell it worldwide by mid-2022."

Toyota takes a big step into the market of electric vehicles with the release of its first SUV built on a new EV platform, joining Volkswagen AG.

The world’s largest carmaker previewed “bZ4X," an electric SUV sitting on its new “e-TNGA" platform at the 2021 Shanghai Auto Show on Monday.

bZ4X is a compact SUV that resembles Toyota's popular Rav-4 but is built on an entirely new platform and features such as a system that can recharge the car's battery using solar power.

Instead of a conventional round-shaped wheel, bZ4X comes with a controller that's inspired by Formula One cars and looks straight out of video games.

Toyota is planning to introduce 15 EVs, including seven "bZ" series models globally.

The BZ stands for "beyond zero", or cars that exceed being "just zero-emission", according to Toyota.

They plan to produce the bZ4X in Japan and China and sell it worldwide by mid-2022.

Toyota had taken a more cautious approach to EVs, but that’s starting to change with the latest debut.

By comparison, Volkswagen, Toyota’s main global rival, announced last month a $29 billion bet on new battery technology to accelerate its shift to EVs.

The e-TNGA platform will speed up the deployment of new EVs, reducing development time and allowing different models to be designed in parallel.

Since they first introduced the Prius, Toyota has not pushed forward with any single technology, instead preparing numerous options like fuel cell, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electric vehicles.

The company plans to expand its number of electrified models, which includes hybrids, to around 70 by 2025.

China-led move to EVs could take in end of oil era: Study

19th November 2020
"Within 10 years, China could save over $80 bn in annual oil import costs as new-energy vehicles become more competitive."

An aggressive China-led shift to electric vehicles (EVs) is expected to slash global oil demand growth by 70 percent by 2030 and will help bring an end to the “oil era”, according to research by the Carbon Tracker think tank published on Friday.

Within 10 years, China could save more than $80 billion in annual oil import costs as new-energy vehicles (NEVs) become increasingly competitive, Carbon Tracker said.

Its calculations were based on a “conservative” scenario by the International Energy Agency projecting that EVs would account for 40 percent of China’s total car sales by 2030, and for 20 percent of sales in India and other emerging markets.

The cost of importing the oil required to fuel an average car is 10 times higher than the cost of solar equipment required to power an electric vehicle, Carbon Tracker said.

“This is a simple choice between growing dependency on what has been expensive oil produced by a foreign cartel, or domestic electricity produced by renewable sources whose prices fall over time,” said Kingsmill Bond, a strategist with Carbon Tracker and the report’s lead author.

EVs are a key component of China’s efforts to slash climate-warming greenhouse gases and improve urban air quality, and India is also setting ambitious 2030 vehicle sales targets.

China has not yet set a date when it will ban the production and sale of traditional cars, but an industry official said last month that NEVs will account for 50 percent of all new car sales by 2035, with hybrid vehicles making up the remainder.

Delhi govt releases order to switch to EVs

26th February 2021
"Delhi government launched a campaign, 'Switch Delhi', to encourage private vehicle owners to take a pledge to shift to electric vehicles and install a charging point within their premises in the next three years."

All departments of the Delhi government will now use only electric vehicles, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia announced on Thursday.

The transition to EVs will be done within the next six months.

The government, which has over 2,000 cars in its fleet, hopes its decision will inspire other cities in the country and the world to tackle the issues of pollution and climate change with the urgency they deserve, he said.

This will go a long way in curbing pollution in Delhi.

Delhi is fast becoming a modern city. Every Indian is proud of Delhi https://t.co/8M0UZeLuCf

— Arvind Kejriwal (@ArvindKejriwal) February 25, 2021

The announcement came a day after the Delhi government launched a campaign, 'Switch Delhi', to encourage private vehicle owners to take a pledge to shift to electric vehicles and install a charging point within their premises in the next three years.

"Over 2,000 cars will be impacted by this decision and will transition to EVs in the next 6 months. We hope this decision inspires cities and govts around India and the world to tackle the pollution and climate change problem with the seriousness and urgency it deserves," Manish Sisodia said.

The Delhi government had in August last year launched an Electric Vehicle Policy to tackle the problem of air pollution. Under the policy, it promised to waive registration fee, road tax, and provide an incentive of up to INR 1.5 lakh for new cars in the national capital.

'Switch Delhi' is an eight-week mass awareness campaign by the Delhi government to sensitize each and every Delhiite about the benefits of switching to EVs as well as to make them aware of the incentives and infrastructure being developed under Delhi's EV policy.

The campaign aims at informing, encouraging, and motivating each and every person in Delhi to switch from polluting vehicles to zero-emission electric vehicles.

While the first two weeks of the campaign have focused on promoting two and three-wheeler owners to switch to EVs, the third-week targets four-wheeler vehicle owners to adopt EVs.
