Yamaha suspends production at its two plants amid Covid-19 surge

11th May 2021
"Yamaha Motors has joined other Indian automakers in announcing a production halt due to the second wave of Covid-19"

Yamaha Motors has joined other Indian automakers in announcing a production halt due to the second wave of Covid-19. The two-wheeler manufacturer declared today that it will close its two factories, one in Surajpur, Uttar Pradesh, and the other in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, for two weeks to protect employees from infection.

These plants will be closed from May 15 to May 31 according to Yamaha. The manufacturer has also stated that a decision on whether or not to restart production at the plants in June will be made only after the Covid-19 situation has been reviewed. Yamaha Motor has yet to list any of its employees who have tested positive.

Mahindra and Mahindra, an Indian automaker, declared on May 3 that it would suspend production due to the ongoing crisis. Maruti Suzuki also announced last month that it would close its Haryana plants from May 1 to May 9 to make oxygen accessible to the medical sector. And, since the number of cases in India is still approaching four lakh, the automaker has agreed to extend its shutdown until May 16.

The Hero MotoCorp shutdown has also been extended until May 9. The two-wheeler manufacturer, which halted development on April 22, declared on Sunday that its facilities in Neemrana and Jaipur, the Global Parts Center (GPC) and the Centre of Innovation and Technology (CIT), are also closed for the time being.

The shutters of MG Motor's Halol plants in Gujarat were also closed from May 29 to May 5. This move, according to Rajeev Chaba, President and Managing Director of MG Motor India, is intended to "break the chain of Covid."

Toyota Kirloskar Motor, too, has halted production between April 26 and May 14. The business, which is based in Karnataka, where the Covid situation is dire, did not mention the pandemic as a reason for the change. It was regarded as an annual upkeep program.
