Carbureted vs Fuel Injected Engine | REVIEWS

14th December 2020
"Let’s find out the difference between a carburetor vs a fuel-injected motorcycle."

Fuel-injected motorcycles are quickly taking over carbureted ones, which ruled the roost until the beginning of the new millennium. Almost every premium motorcycle comes fitted with a FI system, as things stand today. Let’s find out the difference between a carburetor vs a fuel-injected motorcycle.

carburetor-vs-fuel-injected

Carburetor

carbuetor

The most basic and until recently, the most prevalent fuel system used in two-wheelers, especially in Nepal, is the carburetor. To explain the basic working of a carburetor, think of it as a tube that feeds an air-fuel mixture into the cylinder from one end, with an air filter attached to another. Now, somewhere in the middle of this tube, the air passage area is restricted to increase the velocity of the air passing through. This little area or part of the carburetor system is known as the venturi. By increasing the velocity of the air through the narrow area, a low-pressure pocket is created, which in turn facilitates drawing fuel from a jet placed near the venturi through suction.

The fuel jet mounted near the venturi draws its fuel directly from the fuel tank through a float chamber, which is a small fuel reservoir, with a float valve that when it is completed, cuts the fuel supply and resumes when the jet draws fuel from it. Then the resulting mixture of air-fuel is supplied to the cylinder where combustion takes place.

This is a very simple description of how a carburetor functions, while modern carburetors are usually more complicated in nature, like constant velocity or CV carburetors. To control the air-fuel mixture, these carburetors make use of components such as a diaphragm, needle valve, and pilot jet.

Advantages of carburetor

  • They cost less and are easy to manage.

  • Carburetors allow the users to tune them to their requirements.

Disadvantages of carburetor

  • Not efficient system.

  • Old dated design.

  • Air-fuel mixture fluctuates, affecting engine smoothness.

Fuel injection

fuel-injection

A Fuel Injection system is composed of a complex series of electronics and sensors, unlike carburetors. The fuel is pulled from the tank in carbureted systems, while in a Fuel Injected system it relies on a fuel pump mounted within the tank for fine-grained control over the fuel flow. In the combustion chamber, the fuel injection nozzle also goes directly inside. In the case of FI devices, the pressurized fuel is very well atomized as a homogeneous mist, facilitating very efficient and safe combustion.

Advantages of fuel injection

  • Optimized air-fuel mixture and atomization allow for cleaner, more efficient combustion.

  • Better throttle response.

  • Better fuel efficacy and more power.

  • They do not easily breakdown.

Disadvantages of fuel injection

  • They are more expensive than a carburetor.

  • Cannot be repaired by a simple tool, which is expensive

So though, considering its cost, the benefits of a FI system are pretty obvious, you'd still be one of the millions who still put their trust in the good old carb. It’s all about the preference of the people after all.

How often should I give my motorcycle for servicing?

1st November 2020
"Keep your bike high and your head even higher."

This is a very difficult question to answer with specificity. All motorcycles aren’t the same. A sports bike, for example, is optimized for speed, while a touring bike is designed for endurance and effectiveness. As a consequence, when it comes to having a facility, they may have very different criteria.

When to give your motorcycle for servicing?

garage

Checking your individual textbook is what you ought to do. Every manual would state that, based on your bike's CC, you need to have the bike tested after a certain amount of kilometers, usually about 4000-6000KM, or at least once a year Even if you don't hit that number before then.

Furthermore, as a rider, how much you take the motor for a tune-up depends on you. On summer weekends, you could only take your bike out for a ride, or you can rely on it virtually every day to get you to and from work.

When you think of moving it to a specialized garage, how much it is used and the lengths it drives can affect it.

5 things to avoid severe servicing of your motorcycle.

  • Tuning the carburetor every 2 years.

  • Flushing the Cooling system every two years if you have a water-cooled engine.

  • Changing your oil every 4000-6000 Km or every month. Whichever comes first!

  • Lubing the motorcycle chain and checking the pressure on it every 6000 KM or every month. Whichever comes first!

  • Checking the tyre pressure every month.

Ensuring that the bike undergoes routine servicing should allow for the detection and handling of any possible issues before they become serious. In addition, it is also possible to perform simple maintenance activities including oil replacement, which will keep the wheels working smoothly.

You should look for a dealership where the mechanics are up-to-date on all the new specifications for your particular model while searching for places to take your motorcycle.

Remember to simply take it to the garage and ask if you have any questions about the way your cycle works. The technicians are likely to be able to carry out a complete fault diagnosis for you and help you locate the issue.

Why don’t all bikes have Abs?

10th December 2020
"Let’s talk about this popular question “Why don’t all bikes have Abs?”."

The motorcycle world is full of mystery and many questions. What is the best mileage a bike can give or insightful questions about slipper clutch, gears parts, and many more? Let’s talk about this popular question “Why don’t all bikes have Abs?”. the answer isn’t as simple as you think.

An anti-lock braking system or ABS is a safety anti-skid braking system used on aircraft and on land vehicles, such as cars, motorcycles, trucks, and buses.

Purpose

The expected function of a bike, and where it is going to be ridden, also factors into the decision to equip it with ABS. Not all riding surfaces are alike, and in some of them, ABS can be more of a hindrance than a support. Other regions encourage manufacturers to determine what models receive ABS, beyond the EU guidelines. In these areas, the intended intent, market segment, and price point of a motorcycle all determine the inclusion of ABS.

Cost, Looks, and Weight

Cost is another explanation of why ABS is not as popular as it should be. Now, this is less of a consideration than when it was first implemented, but ABS also suggests a rise in prices. Thanks to the numerous ABS structures, it also adds extra weight, and it inevitably clutters the looks of bikes. Although that last part does not seem significant, a broad number of buyers of motorcycles disagree. For starters, cruiser owners appear to have a very deep admiration for design over technology.

When Abs is unnecessary?

You know how much you love the chance to freestyle if you're a dirt biker, taking your bike through its strong paces and executing movements that are unique to your physicality and style of riding. Having ABS installed could seriously curtail your performance when you’re tearing it up on the dirt. Without ABS, you’re able to exact more control over your bike and adapt to the surface conditions, braking or skidding when you want to, not when the braking system kicks in.

When Abs is necessary

When you have to brake hard and unexpectedly, because ABS prevents the wheels from locking, you might be checking for ABS on your cruiser or commuter bike. Typically, stop-and-go traffic means you're constantly and quite unexpectedly using the brakes. For instance, when a speeding commuter swerves into your lane in front of you without warning, you can be cruising along between clumps of traffic. Without any warning, you can even come across a full traffic standstill.

Conclusion

Abs is a huge improvement in the safety of the rider since it locks tires and prevents many dangerous accidents. But in the dirt bike, you want to move freely unlike city bikes that need to stop and start quite unexpectedly.

Things to consider while buying a motorcycle

10th December 2020
"Enjoy your big step with ease!"

Buying your first motorcycle can be a thrilling experience. Whether you are buying a new bike or a second-hand bike, we will guide you on what to consider while buying your first ride. It takes passion, some patience, and a lot of research. So read this motorcycle buying guide before buying one!

Find the bike that suits you

suits-you

Adjustable elements such as the seat, steering wheel, etc do not come with motorcycles. That is why you need to see what suits you and what looks right while buying a motorcycle. Remember, what feels right for one minute in the showroom might not feel good on a long trip around town.

Standard, or “naked motorcycles” are great beginner motorcycles because the rider is in an upright position without having to lean and reach too far forward so naked bikes are a bit better for beginners than a sports bike.

Research, Research, Research

research

Whatever bike you want to purchase, make sure you read what you can about the manufacturer, the model, and when and how you can service it and if possible, get parts in the future. Basically, after all, you are going to be the owner, and this is not a minor investment, you should make an effort to know more about your bike inside and out.

Power is not everything

Why should I buy a 250cc bike instead of 600cc?

The answer is 600cc bike has more power and you cannot control the power if you are a beginner. Start from a humble beginning, Even experienced riders have problems with 600cc bikes.

You should start from 200cc above bikes, Many manufacturers are even specifically designing bikes in this class for new riders like yourself. Our advice: start with something smaller and trade up for something bigger later on.

Bike weight

average-motorcycle-weight.

You should also worry about the weight after you settle on the kind of bike you want. Usually, the weight of the bike goes up with displacement, but that is not the case with all motorcycles, since some cruisers weigh a lot for a more moderate displacement. It is more convenient and simple to ride a lightweight motorcycle, and you can also ride it at much higher and quicker speeds which is fun. So the lighter your bike weights, the more fun you get while riding it.

Think for long term

Another tip that we can give you is to think about the long term, buy the beast you dreamed of, the kind that can go on the city and long trips with ease. Always go for what makes you happy but let your brain decide what’s best for you and if you're buying it for day-to-day functioning, go for things like high mileage, lightweight, low servicing cost, affordable, and the one best for you. Do not settle for cheaper motorcycles as you're going to need them for a long time and compromise is not a factor!
