"Instagram noted that Live views in India grew 60 per cent on a week-on-week basis in March."

Instagram will now let users add three more people to their live sessions with its new feature, Live Rooms. The Live feature on Instagram gives users a way to go live, create and connect virtually, and hence has seen diverse use cases this year.

Reels, TikTok equivalent feature of Instagram

12th November 2019
"Feature similar to TikTok where a user can select an audio and lipsync to that audio being tested in Brazil."

Everyone knows story section of Instagram and Facebook. But very few know that this feature was a direct knock-off of Snapchat stories. Now Instagram is looking into a new feature that is very similar to TikTok.

Feature similar to TikTok where a user can select an audio and lipsync to that audio is being tested by Instagram in Brazil. Feature is named Reels and will give access to a huge catalog of music to choose from. Reels will live inside Instagram app along with other story modes like Boomerang and Super-Zoom allowing the user to record 15-sec clip and share it as stories. Reels is live in Brazil for both Android and iOS users but no words on when other locations will get this feature yet.

Instagram celebrate its tenth birthday by bringing back classic icons

5th October 2020
"An easter egg to the app that lets you change its home screen icon"

Instagram launched ten years ago today: the photo-sharing app first hit the App Store on October 6th, 2010, a few months after the release of the iPhone 4. To celebrate, Instagram has added an easter egg to the app that lets you change its home screen icon.

The icons available include the classic Polaroid-style camera designs that were used for more than five years. There are themed variations on the current logo, too, including Pride rainbow colors and monochrome options. The app update also includes another feature: a private map and archive of your stories from the past three years.

To access the new icons, go to the settings within the app and do a long swipe down on the screen to reveal some emoji. Once you’ve swiped down far enough, the icons will be unlocked and you’ll see a message from Instagram.

Here’s an example of how it works:

The icons Easter egg still appears to be in the process of rolling out — I’ve got it to work on a couple of phones, but some don’t have it yet.

It sounds like the icons will only be available during October. Instagram’s message reads “this month we’re inviting you to change your app icon to your favorite,” so don’t get too attached.

Facebook Messenger and Instagram now lets you send disappearing messages

12th November 2020
"The new Snapchat-inspired mode arrives on Facebook messaging products."

Facebook’s latest take on a signature Snapchat feature is arriving today, and it’s called Vanish Mode. First announced as part of its big September redesign of Messenger, Vanish Mode is an ephemeral messaging mode for both Facebook Messenger and Instagram that will you let you send texts, photos, voice messages, emoji, and stickers that disappear immediately once they’re viewed by other parties and the chat window is closed.

Some users may have already noticed Vanish Mode in the chat settings on Messenger, as Facebook has been rolling out it slowly to some users since the redesign was announced two months ago. And on Instagram, some elements of Vanish Mode are already part of the core direct messaging feature set, including disappearing photos and videos once a piece of media has been viewed. Vanish Mode is similar in ways to Messenger’s existing secret conversation mode that lets you enter an end-to-end encrypted chat that’s saved only on your device, although the new mode is designed to delete anything sent forever once it’s been viewed.

For Facebook, ephemeral messaging still represents a way to attract younger smartphone users who have flocked to chat apps and platforms where they don’t have to post publicly and risk being haunted by social media posts later on in life. While Snapchat popularized ephemeral messaging among US teens with Stories and its DM design, Facebook has since adopted many of its rival’s features and implemented them throughout Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp for users of all age groups around the world.

Vanish Mode is just the latest of Facebook’s takes on the trend and a notable addition considering CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced last year his company would strategically shift away from the News Feed and public posts and more toward private messaging and groups.

Vanish Mode will appear in both apps as a distinct option you can turn on and off in the settings of any particular chat message. You can also enter the mode by swiping up on a chat window (Vanish Mode is only available for one-on-one chats at the moment, and not group threads). The mode will then enable disappearing messages and other chat interactions, with the option to turn it off located at the top of the chat window or by swiping down again.

Facebook says the mode will be opt-in only, meaning you have to agree to enter Vanish Mode once another user in the chat has enabled it. Messenger and Instagram will also notify you when a screenshot of a chat is taken while the mode is enabled. Facebook says you can report individuals over Vanish Mode chat conduct, although it’s unclear how much of the conversation Facebook will be able to review for violations.

Vanish Mode should be available for Messenger in the US as well as some other countries starting today, Facebook says. And it will go live on Instagram in the US and other countries at a later date.
