Ways to Keep Your Room Warm this Winter

30th December 2021
"cConsider these alternatives to heating the entire house instead of adjusting the thermostat."

Winter has arrived. For those who live in colder climates, the drop in temperature might bring a hike in heating costs in the coming months.

Moreover, consider these alternatives to heating the entire house instead of adjusting the thermostat. Here are the ways to keep your room warm without turning up the thermostat.

Window curtains

Because outside temperatures are absorbed through the window glass, upgrading to insulated or heavier window coverings can help insulate your bedroom in the winter.

Replace your lightweight sheers with heavy, lined drapes to cover your windows.

Search for drafts

Draft

If your bedroom windows (and, if you have them, doors leading to the outside) have any gaps or cracks, warm inside air is likely flowing out.

This will make you feel cold and force you to spend more money on utilities in order to maintain your ideal interior air temperature.

Make sure to check any windows and doors that open to the outside each season.

Use a bed heater or a hot water bottle

Hotbag

When it's time to go to bed, put a hot water bottle between your sheets and enjoy the warmth.

You may also use a bed heater to make a more modern version of a hot water bottle.

A bed warmer circulates air beneath the covers, quickly heating the entire bed. They are costly, but they save money and energy as compared to switching up the thermostat in your house.

Place a Thick Area Rug on the Floor

Rug

During the winter months, do yourself a favor and put down a large area rug to help insulate your bedroom and give your feet a nice treat.

Investing in a quality pair of slippers isn't the only way to keep your toes warm in the winter; laying down some throw rugs may also help.

They will not only keep your feet warm, but they will also improve to insulate your home and perhaps prevent drafts between the flooring.

Moreover, any style of the rug will provide warmth to the floor.

5 tips to avoid accidents in your home

14th December 2021
"We may feel safe in our own homes, but there are risks are all around so we all need to take action to make our homes as safe as possible."

Accidents can easily be prevented by being aware of the dangers and hazards that are in the home. We may feel safe in our own homes, but there are risks are all around so we all need to take action to make our homes as safe as possible.

Don’t overload sockets

Many older homes contain electrical systems, which aren't properly equipped to handle modern power demands.

Don’t tempt fate by plugging too many devices into the same socket. Never plug more than two appliances into an outlet at once.

Using extension cords to plug multiple appliances into one outlet, is also strongly discouraged.

Large appliances such as your refrigerator should have an outlet to themselves. Contact a professional if you hear a sound coming from the outlet or smell something burning.

Keep knives out of reach

Whether they are in use or not, are sure all knives are kept out of reach and are properly secured.

When you are using them, make sure they are not resting on something that can easily be pulled down.

Get in the habit of placing knives on a flat, clutter-free surface to ensure they won’t accidentally fall.

Knives should be stored, blade down, in a designated container, far from the reach of children.

Say no to smoking in the house

The best way to prevent smoking-related injuries and accidents is to not allow them in your home.

Any paraphernalia, such as matches and lighters, should be kept out of reach.

If someone is smoking outside, provide them with an ashtray so that they can safely extinguish the cigarette.

Storing Medicines & Cleaning Supplies

Accidentally ingesting a harmful, poisonous substance is a lot easier than you may think.

Medication bottles look a lot alike, so clearly mark everything and keep it all out of reach of your children.

If you're on several medications, you may want to get a weekly pillbox to keep it all organized.

Also, make sure that your child doesn't have access to any harmful solvents or cleaners -- the area under your kitchen sink is a veritable collection of deadly liquids.

Stair safety

Stairs can be the cause of accidents for many different reasons.

To best avoid falls make sure your handrail runs the full length of the staircase, carpets are secure, and do not put area rugs or mats at the base or top of the stairs.

Also if you paint basement stairs it will be beneficial to add some sand to the paint to give the stairs more traction.

For outside steps that are not well lit, paint the edges white so they can be seen in the dark.

"Is your living room feeling tired with the same old designs and organization?"

Is your living room feeling tired with the same old designs and organization?

There are plenty of simple ways to liven up a living room scheme. Here are some tips that might help you:

Rearrange the furniture

Furniture

The easiest, cheapest, and sometimes most effective way to revamp a living room is rearranging the furniture.

Moreover, if space is limited you may only be able to move smaller furniture pieces, but even moving furniture away from the walls can be transformative.

In actual fact, your room will feel far more spacious and pulled together if you pull sofas and larger items of furniture slightly away from the walls.

Hang mirrors

Hanging mirror

Instead of filling a wall with pictures, you can use mirrors.

The mirrors help bounce light around the room, enhancing the sense of space which is also very beneficial to the small room.

Moreover, you can always choose three or four designs in different sized complimentary shapes that will be more effective.

Be bold with color

Bold color

The best way to transform your living room is by painting a feature wall in a bold paint shade to command attention.

Also, keep floors and furniture choices neutral to let the color show its magic!

Add lighting

If it’s instant glamour that you’re looking for, invest in one piece that will transform the room i.e. good lighting.

Consider fitting statement lighting, such as an oversized chandelier or an on-trend pendant on your living room as it becomes the central focus of the room which goes a long way to lift the rest of the decor.

Also, Choose lighting that can be attached to the walls or hung from above to save room on floor space if your room is small.

Display art on shelves
