Plumbing tips every homeowner should know
"There are plenty of responsibilities that you must consider when becoming a homeowner. One of those is getting to know and maintaining your plumbing system."
Buying your home is an exciting experience. However, there are plenty of responsibilities that you must consider when becoming a homeowner. One of those is getting to know and maintaining your plumbing system.
So here we’ve compiled 5 plumbing tips every homeowner should know:
Know Where Your Water Main is Located
The water main controls all the water coming into your home. It’s typically found in the basement, crawlspace, or the side of your home.
If there’s ever an issue and you need to cut off water to your home, you’ll need to access this quickly.
How to Unclog Drains
Every home is bound to have clogged shower and sink drains over time. But you don’t want to pour any liquid drain cleaners down them to clear hair or other debris.
That’s because, over time, these products can cause damage to pipes. Instead, opt for a sink plunger, drain snake, or tool that can help pull up and remove hair and debris.
Keep tabs on water pressure
It’s such an important part of a healthy plumbing system.
Just like we get our blood pressure taken every time we visit the doctor, you should be monitoring your home’s water pressure as often as you can.
You can pick up a simple pressure gauge pretty cheaply at any hardware or home improvement store.
Take care of your toilet
You can start by making sure you only flush toilet paper and your waste down the toilet.
Cotton swabs, baby wipes, paper towels, and other things can all get caught in your pipes and lead to clogs.
You also want to make sure your toilet is working properly. A running toilet is a telltale sign that one or more components in the toilet tank need replacing.
But sometimes toilet leaks can be so tiny they don’t make any noise.
Know Your Water-Based Appliances
Any appliance that uses water in your home has the potential to be trouble.
Make sure you do regular checkups on the dishwasher, sinks, icemaker, toilets, washing machine hose, and more to ensure that they are running well and aren’t showing any signs of leaking.
If there is a problem, make sure you know how to shut off the water to each device until it can be fixed.
