What is garden bed? How to build it?
"Organize your garden with garden beds."
Well, ‘Bed’ in gardening is reasonably different from the ‘bed’ everyone is familiar with. A garden bed, put simply, is the process of preparing the soil for gardening. It is rather a form of gardening in which the soil is enclosed in 3-to-4 ft wide containment units which may be made up of wood, or metal, or any other material. The most important thing to note is that a garden bed is raised over some kind of cardboard, or plastic, or newspaper, or landscape fiber, but not on the soil or ground directly.

The first step when planning to add a new flower bed or even if you are simply planting a tree or shrub is to check if there are any buried utility lines on your property. It’s better to stay away from such utility lines for your garden’s safety.
Then, it's best to kill the existing vegetation. If it's wood, take it off. If there’re weeds and herbs, then hurl away them and clear out space.
Next, ensure the shape and size of your garden bed after clearing the space for the garden bed.
After deciding on the shape and size of the bed, enclose the area of the bed with wood or metal- any as per your preference.
Then, cover the soil and plant materials with different layers of newspaper with a good thick layer of compost, at least 2 inches of it.
Leave the bed alone until spring. Over the fall and winter, the newspapers will block out all light, which will kill the vegetation. The newspapers will also decompose over several months and come spring you will have a nice layer of compost that you can turn over into the soil. This method is completely organic and will help improve your soil while killing existing vegetation.
Then, sow the flower and vegetable seeds into the soil and add a layer of compost to the top of the soil.
Some rules of thumb while creating a new garden bed is:
Work the soil when it is moist, but not wet.
Turn the soil over to a depth of at least 12 inches.
Add 2-3 inches of compost and turn it into the bed.
Either cover the bed with a thick (3-4") layer of mulch or use a weed and feed to help keep weed seeds from germinating.
Add another layer of compost to keep down weeds and preserve moisture.
Happy gardening!
