Alternative learning system to be brought on mainstream

29th August 2020
"The Ministry reached this point considering the fact of health risks as well as the reality to get access to the class."

As the risk of coronavirus infection is on the rise, the government is planning to use academic session by considering to practising alternative learning system as the mainstream.

At a virtual programme organised here today, Spokesperson at the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology Ministry Dipak Sharma said that the government is taking this decision so that the whole academic year won’t be spared. The Ministry reached this point considering the fact of health risks as well as the reality to get access to the class.

He argued that the National Curriculum Evaluation Council has already decided in principle to give approval for the alternative learning and the Curriculum Development Centre is assessing other technical aspects including the credit hours.

The students’ individual evaluation would be done to advance the course and the students’ record would be maintained from each school to confirm the number of the students’ enrolment.

For this to materialize, Alternative System’s Learning Facilitation Guidelines, 2020 would be amended within a week

On the occasion, Chairman of Nepal Teachers’ Federation Baburam Thapa argued that the discussion on the academic session was a positive move but trading barbs on teachers for poor delivery was not acceptable.

Arguing that educational result and operation as in the regular period was not likely, Thapa urged to prioritize self-study at this time. Private and Boarding Schools Organisations of Nepal (PABSON) president Tikaram Puri suggested initiating the student admission process if the new academic session is to be formally initiated. He demanded that the school new session should be counted from June 15 onwards.

President of National Private and Boarding Schools Association of Nepal (N-PABSAN), Rituraj Sapkota said the learning of all students cannot be guaranteed and managed well unless all the students were documented even though the alternative system is formally recognised.

President of Federation of Community Schools Management Committees Nepal, Krishna Thapa said there was no other option than to count the alternative learning as a part of the school session. He suggested that several schools would be able to run classes by maintaining social distancing if the fear and concerns of the parents could be addressed. He also stressed on linking teachers with students in alternative learning.

President of Guardians Federation and Academic Session Management Recommendation Committee member Suprabhat Bhandari suggested preparing a plan for mobilizing the national volunteers for the regularity of the academic session as the risk of coronavirus pandemic was not going to go away shortly.

Former secretary at the Ministry of Education, Bhim Lal Gurung said although the alternative learning was appropriate in the time of crisis, its managerial aspect was quite challenging. He stressed on the need for cooperation and the development of infrastructure for making the alternative learning functional.

Headteacher of Nilbarahi School, Kathmandu, Dr Januka Poudel shared that a survey showed most of the students of the school did not have access to the internet and information technology. So this is the challenge in an alternative method of teaching and learning, she said.

Tribhuvan University Exercises Subsidized Learning Data Packs

24th August 2020
"TU is resolving the internet problems faced by students and teachers by subscribing to various data pack offers."

Due to the on-going Coronavirus pandemic, the traditional educational approach has been replaced by the online education system. Tribhuvan University (TU), the eldest university of Nepal, has also been conducting online classes of different faculties since last few months. However, several students who currently are in their hometowns or villages are facing internet problems and have been objecting the decision.

To resolve this problem, TU along with its affiliated campuses and colleges have decided to enable different highly-subsidized data pack offers catered by telecommunications service providers- NTC and Ncell, to aid the internet problem faced by several teachers and students. Previously, Ncell had brought Mobile Class Data Pack in collaboration with TU as well.

Recently, Shanker Dev Campus, a TU affiliated campus, has sent the list of the phone number of its students and teachers to NTC; and, has managed the subscription of suitable data pack for the students and teachers as per their requirement.

Besides TU, other schools, colleges, institutions and universities are also subscribing the subsidized data packs such as e-Shikshya Package and Happy Learning Pack by NTC and Mobile class data pack and Student Plan by Ncell.

Which Gadget is Best Suitable for Online Education? Smartphone, Tablet or Laptop?

27th August 2020
"Smartphone, tablet or laptop ? Which one will you prefer for online learning?"

As the world is affected by the novel Coronavirus Pandemic, the teaching-learning process has shifted to online or digital approach. From elementary-level to university-level, all the classes are being conducted online throughout the world. Consequently, parents are concerned about the gadgets that could help their kids in digital learning.

People, generally, use a Smartphone, tablet or laptop for online education. Considering different factors like availability, health aspects, budget, screen, class-time, etc. the suitability of a gadget for online education differs from person to person and their age-group.

Here, we present you the device or gadget that could be efficient and suitable for you or your kids.

Smartphone

The gadget possessed by a lot of people i.e. Smartphone is handy, portable and easy to use. It is best suitable for short classes with possibly less or no slide shows or whiteboards because the screen is too small to read the content and can strain your eyes. Being handy, children can easily use it and surf the net for homework as well. The battery part may also be another disadvantage if you have longer classes. And, I personally feel that it’s difficult to do and submit homework and assignments in a Smartphone. But, if you have a limited budget, go with smartphones because something is better than nothing.

Tablet

Tablet, with a relatively large screen, is the best device for children. It won't strain the eyes as one can easily read the contents in a slide show or whiteboards. As it is easy to use, the children can join the classes on-their-own and can also surf the internet for their homework conveniently. There are several budget-friendly tablets as well which don’t lack much in functions and features. The battery aspect differs with the brand but will not cause many problems. Tablets are suitable for higher class students with a limited budget as well.

Laptop

Laptop, in my opinion, is the best gadget for online education. From attending classes to completing assignments and projects easily, it is the best device for students (from mid-school and above) and teachers. Varieties of functions, larger screen size and longer battery life are the major advantages of using a laptop for online education. However, the budget aspect can be a disadvantage as most of the good laptops are above $400 or Nrs. 40,000.

Online education, superficially, seems to be a great substitute for traditional education approach and also a step closer towards a digital world. But, it has its own consequences as well; Increase in screen-time leads to an increase in health risk as well. So, it’s better if you try to reduce the screen-time as much as possible.
