Apple profit soars on higher iphone sales

29th April 2021
"The iPhone, Apple’s crown jewel, hadn’t sold quite as well as usual over the past few years"

High demand for iPhone and other Apple products resulted in more than double profit for the company in the first quarter.

The company's profits came to $23.6 billion, while revenue climbed 54% to $89.6 billion in the fiscal second quarter.

Although the iPhone hadn't sold as well as it does usually as people have been holding on to their current models.

iPhone 12's release however has brought the sales back on track.

It is being analyzed that the popularity of the iPhone 12 could lead to the product's biggest sales since 2014 when iPhone 6 came out.

The iPhone 12 is the first model that supports 5G wireless network which promises higher speeds.

The other services of Apple such as music and TV streaming services, recently announced AirTags, computers, and tablets have also accelerated the sales.

Mac sales soared 70% to $9.1 billion, a revenue record for the company, and iPad sales climbed 79% to $7.8 billion.

Apple to launch its own web-based search engine

30th August 2020
"Apple's engine would weaken Google's stranglehold on search"

A new report claims that factors are increasingly pointing to Apple expanding Siri search results and Spotlight Searches even farther, with the company potentially working on a universal search engine.

Apple already has a search engine it uses for Spotlight Searches and Siri. However, if a new report is accurate, Apple may be looking to ditch the financial arrangement it has for Google to be the default on the iPhone, and launch its own full search engine.

The main tentpole to the argument made on Thursday morning by Jon Henshaw at Coywolf says that it isn't clear if Siri Suggestions are using Google at all anymore. Instead, Apple is returning search results with Spotlight Search, and is bypassing other search engines.

In AppleInsider's own brief tests on Thursday morning, some outgoing and return traffic to and from Google for Siri Suggestions in iOS 14 passed through our router. The same search terms in iOS 13 pulled nearly entirely from Google.

The report goes on to say that Apple is investing heavily on search, and pointing to job postings for search engineers. However, the number of available jobs in related fields has decreased in the last year, versus increased. This may be a factor of coronavirus limitations more than anything else, making a year-over-year comparison difficult.

An update to the "Applebot" web crawler page for web developers was made in June as well. Henshaw notes that the changes included how to verify traffic was actually coming from Applebot, and the company provided details about differences in the crawler between desktop- and mobile-centric searches. The update also made clear that the crawler renders ages similarly to Google, and a section about search rankings was amplified upon. At present, the information Apple has promulgated about the crawler is very similar, if not identical, to how Google scans pages.

Henshaw also notes that the AppleBot web crawler has been busy, with him noticing it just recently. A quick perusal of AppleInsider crawler traffic has shown no notable increase or decrease in Applebot crawler traffic since 2015, following a slow launch in the fall of 2014.

However, despite some evidence that suggests that there is not an increase in factors that suggest an imminent launch, a full Apple search engine available to all makes some sense. Henshaw says that Apple's engine would weaken Google's stranglehold on search, provide better promotion for Apple services, tighten Apple's control of the full hardware and software stack, and allow developers to promote apps in larger search results beyond just App Store searches.

A big factor against Apple developing its own full search engine include the loss of the billions of dollars per year that Google pays Apple for the privilege. Additionally, it may draw some additional antitrust attention from regulators if it does so, in a time where the investigations and testimony demands are at an all-time high.

Henshaw does note that the product may never come to market.

"At this point, everything is based on observation and conjecture. They may never release a search engine. It's also possible that iOS, iPadOS, and macOS users will be using it and not even be aware of it," writes Henshaw. "It could be so tightly integrated into the operating system and native apps that alerts and Spotlight Searches slowly steal away queries that would have otherwise been made on Google."

Apple’s latest iPhone 12 smartphone appears to be even more difficult for third-party companies to repair

31st October 2020
"iFixit reports that there are major issues when replacing the camera"

Apple’s latest iPhone12 smartphone appears to be even more difficult for third-party companies to repair, according to a report from iFixit. Specifically, the new phone appears to run into issues if a user replaces the camera module, which renders the cameras almost totally unusable.

The issue — first spotted by YouTuber Hugh Jeffreys — doesn’t appear to be a strictly hardware-related problem. As iFixit’s teardown notes, the iPhone 12 is a relatively good device when it comes to disassembly and replacement of various key parts.
But should you actually swap a camera module from one iPhone 12 to another, it appears that the phone will reject the replacement part, with iFixit describing issues with the ultrawide camera and general issues of unresponsiveness.

The iPhone 12 marks the first iPhone to have these problems — previous models allowed for replacement cameras with no issues, and even the iPhone 12 Pro appears to work completely fine. It’s not clear whether this is a one-off glitch or some specific quirk of the iPhone 12’s cameras. Previous iPhone models have had related issues, like the iPhone 7 and 8 Plus, where Apple used three different display manufacturers that weren’t fully interchangeable.

But even if the camera issue is just a temporary one, iFixit notes that it seems clear that Apple is looking to maintain stricter control over iPhone repairs. The DIY repair site also claims to have gotten ahold of Apple’s new internal training guides for iPhone 12 support, which note that repairing a camera or display will now require Apple’s own, in-house System Configuration app, something that had previously only been required for a battery swap.

And Apple has long since limited some aspects of iPhone repairs, like its Touch ID and Face ID sensors, which it’s barred third-party repairs from in the name of security. But even if those components — which are critical parts of unlocking an iPhone — really do have those additional security requirements that would necessitate Apple-only repairs, it’s hard to see how the camera or battery would require similar restrictions.

It’s possible that this is all just a glitch in the system, especially given Apple’s past history with slightly wonky part swapping and the fact that the issue appears to only impact that iPhone 12 and not the 12 Pro. But given Apple’s past history with things like its attempt to lock down “unauthorized” third-party battery or display repairs with ominous warnings, it’s possible the camera issue here is just the start of even further part restrictions.

In a statement, Apple didn’t address the compatibility issue for iPhone 12 camera parts. The company instead commented that “We are committed to giving our customers more options and locations for safe and reliable repairs. Our new independent repair provider program is designed to give repair businesses of all sizes access to genuine parts, training, and tools needed to perform the most common iPhone repairs. These service providers have access to the same tools and repair manuals used by Apple and Authorized Service Providers (AASPs).

According to, Apple's iPhone 12 led the list of the top ten best-selling smartphones, followed by the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max.

“As 5G network rollouts accelerate, OEMs are launching more 5G devices in a variety of price ranges,” said Counterpoint Research Associate Monika Sharma. “5G is gradually becoming a standard offering, and as prices continue to fall, more mid-tier 5G capable smartphones will appear on the bestseller list in the coming months.”

According to Counterpoint, the iPhone 11 was the fourth best-selling smartphone in the world after the iPhone 12 series. The iPhone 11 was released in September 2019, and it performed well in terms of sales even months later. According to a February report, the iPhone 11 was the most shipped smartphone in 2020, with over 64.8 million units shipped globally.

In addition to the iPhone 11, the iPhone SE 2020 ranked among the top-selling smartphones in January. The iPhone 12 mini, which is widely regarded as not having received the same level of success as other iPhone 12 models, also made it into the top ten best-selling smartphones list for January.

Following the iPhone models, Xiaomi's Redmi 9A and Redmi 9 took the fifth and sixth spots on the list, respectively. According to reports, both phones accounted for 25% of Xiaomi's total smartphone sales for the month.
