Honda to stop producing cars in India for 12 days amid Covid scare
"Honda Cars India announced on Thursday that it is advancing the maintenance shutdown at its Rajasthan-based manufacturing plant by approximately ten days in response to the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic"
Honda Cars India announced on Thursday that it is advancing the maintenance shutdown at its Rajasthan-based manufacturing plant by approximately ten days in response to the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic. To combat the spread of coronavirus infections, the Japanese automaker has decided to shut down production at its Tapukara-based plant for 12 days beginning May 7.
Honda has announced that production at the manufacturing facility will be halted from May 7 to May 18. Beginning May 19, the automaker will resume manufacturing operations.
The closure of the annual maintenance block was originally scheduled for the middle of May 2021.
The Tapukara plant of HCIL has an installed production capacity of 1.8 lakh units per year. Employees from the company's corporate and zonal offices who work in all functions have been asked to work from home. According to Honda, only a few associates involved in running essential services that require physical presence for a few critical activities are in the office.
Honda is not the first automaker to take such precautions in light of the growing number of positive Covid-19 cases. Mahindra & Mahindra, too, announced earlier this week that the annual maintenance plant shutdown would be moved to May.
Other automakers, including Maruti Suzuki, Hero MotoCorp, MG Motor India, Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI), and Suzuki Motorcycle India, have already announced a temporary halt in manufacturing operations in response to the increase in Covid-19 cases.
