Sony digital camera webcam software is now available for Macs

15th October 2020
"This will surely upgrade your Zoom calls."

Sony has released a new version of its Imaging Edge Webcam software for Macs, which allows you to directly plug in a recent Sony camera to use as a high-quality webcam for Zoom or Skype calls on your computer.

The company had already released a version of the software for Windows back in August, but the new release means that Mac users can also get in on the action, with crisp, high-quality video calls.

The new software works with 36 of Sony’s cameras, including recent cameras from its E-mount and A-mount series of cameras, like the A9 II, A9, A7S III, A7R IV, A7R III, A7R II, A7S II, A7S, A7 III, A7 II, A6600, A6500, A6400, A6100, as well as its fixed-lens devices like RX100 VII, RX100 VI, RX0 II, RX0, and the vlog-focused ZV-1.

Older devices, like the original A7 or the A6000, aren’t supported, although you can still manually connect them for use as a webcam using an HDMI capture card (this cheap model that costs between $11 and $25 does the trick.)

Sony is one of the last camera companies to offer a software solution for using its high-end cameras as a webcam: Canon, Olympus, Panasonic, Fujifilm, and GoPro have all also already offered software for their own devices.

AP, Sony reach deal for new still and video cameras

23rd July 2020
"It will be the first time the AP uses video and still cameras from the same manufacturer, which it hopes will allow for greater consistency in the product and more speed. Photographers will be able to easily share lenses and memory cards."

The Associated Press says it has reached a deal with Sony Electronics to exclusively equip its visual journalists with new video and still cameras over the next two years.

The AP sends some 3,000 photos and 200 videos a day to customers worldwide. Visual journalism is a point of pride for the news cooperative, which won its 54th Pulitzer Prize this year, the 32nd it has won for photography.

The new Alpha cameras will be smaller and lighter, and employ mirrorless technology, enabling photographers to work silently.

“This is a game-changer for the AP and will give us way more flexibility into the future,” said Derl McCrudden, deputy managing editor for visual and digital journalism.

The company would not discuss the size of the investment.

It will be the first time the AP uses video and still cameras from the same manufacturer, which it hopes will allow for greater consistency in the product and more speed. Photographers will be able to easily share lenses and memory cards.

“We think we can get images from the back of cameras to customers in minutes,” said J. David Ake, director of photography.

Ake said he hoped the transition would be complete in between 18 months and two years, although training on the new equipment will be initially complicated by the coronavirus pandemic.

Neal Manowitz, deputy president for Imaging Products and Solutions Americas at Sony Electronics, said the company is “honored to equip AP’s journalists with our technology and support, giving them the opportunity to capture, transmit and deliver imagery in ways they never could before.”

Sony announces PS5 event for Wednesday September 16th

12th September 2020
"PS5 pricing and release dates should arrive on Wednesday."

Sony is holding a special PlayStation 5 event next week. The company will broadcast a 40-minute “digital showcase” on Wednesday, September 16th that will include updates from first-party Sony game studios and third-party partners. Sony is pitching the event as “one more look at some of the great games coming to PS5 at launch (and beyond!)” before the console launches.

It’s also likely we’ll get a release date and price for the PlayStation 5. Microsoft was originally planning to announce its Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X launch plans and pricing next week, before the $299 price of the Series S leaked. Sony opened up pre-registration for PS5 preorders last month, but the company still hasn’t shared date for official preorders or pricing and release date information.

It looks increasingly likely that we’ll find out the price of the PS5 on Wednesday, especially given that Microsoft is opening up Xbox preorders on September 22nd. Microsoft’s Xbox Series X console is priced at $499, but Sony has two prices to provide for both its disc-less digital edition PS5 and the regular PS5. We could be about to witness some competitive next-gen pricing, especially given Microsoft’s $299 Xbox Series S.

Sony’s PlayStation 5 event will take place on Wednesday at 4PM ET / 1PM PT. Stay tuned to The Verge for all the latest PS5 news on Wednesday.
