Volkswagen loses case in top EU court for Volkswagen emissions scandal

18th December 2020
"The scandal has cost Volkswagen more than $30 billion in vehicle refits, fines and provisions."

It seems to appear that there's no rest for Volkswagen in its notorious 'Diesegate' scandal and the carmaker has now lost a case in the European Union's top court which pronounced that it had busted the law by installing 'cheat' devices on its cars undergoing emission tests. It also pronounced that the car maker's argument that the devices were used to protect the engines was on thin ice.

The European Union's top court ruled that Volkswagen breached the law by installing on its cars a so-called defeat device to cheat on emission tests and could not argue it was merely protecting car engines.

Volkswagen has been facing massive heat since the US Environmental Protection Agency first accused it of a software rig on its 'clean diesel' vehicles in the country. This was five years ago, five years of denial, admission, and a whole lot of legal tussle and brand image deterioration.

Volkswagen did admit that millions of its vehicles - 11 million - had been fitted with such devices and that it was not in the US alone. The scandal has cost Volkswagen 30 billion euros ($35 billion) in fines and civil settlements and led to the recall of millions of vehicles.

The EU top court on Thursday pronounced that car maker cannot fit their offerings with devices that smooth control figures of emissions for the purpose of passing a test.

The court also strongly disagreed that the idea behind the installation of the device was to prevent aging or clogging up of the engines under the hood. "In order to be justified, the presence of such a device must allow the engine to be protected against sudden and exceptional damage, and that only those immediate risks of damage which give rise to a specific hazard when the vehicle is driven are such as to justify the use of a defeat device," the court said.

While environment activists are celebrating the decree, some calling it a 'landmark ruling for clean air in Europe', Volkswagen says it won't have an impact on current legal disputes as the court did not comment on probable damages to owners of such vehicles.

Volkswagen ID.4 first all-electric SUV Crossover Teased

27th August 2020
"The outline of the Volkswagen ID.4 is that of a typical crossover."

The German carmaker is gearing up to put an end to all the anticipations soon. Volkswagen has released a teaser image of the ID.4 giving us a good idea of its stylish and urban design language.

Volkswagen-ID-4

With the ID.4, Volkswagen is expanding its offering by an all-electric vehicle in the largest segment worldwide – the compact SUV class. The car will in future be built and sold in Europe, China and later also in the US. Klaus Zyciora knows the character of the ID.4 like no-one else – the Head of Design for the Volkswagen Group designed the car together with his team.

Volkswagen-ID-4-Crossover-Teased

The outline of the ID.4 is of a typical crossover but the face looks very attractive as per the teaser images. Of course, then, the grille is missing and you get a very sleek chunk instead which is flanked by stretched out LED projector headlamps. That said, it will remind us of the Kia Seltos as well with a really slim DRL strip running on that sleek portion.

In fact, it's the DRLs that enhance its appeal with the way they fringe around the headlight assemblies and we hope the production model stays true to this design language. It makes a solid impression with sharp character lines on the bumper and hood which continues on the profile as well. Moreover, the sloping roofline, curvy beltline and flared wheel arches give it a sporty stance, in-turn adding to its urban crossover appeal.

Volkswagen-look

The Volkswagen ID.4 will be an all-electric all-wheel-drive (AWD) crossover and will be slightly longer than the Volkswagen Tiguan in terms of dimension. It'll be underpinned by Volkswagen's MEB modular platform for all-electric vehicles which will also underpin the upcoming Skoda Enyaq IV, it's an in-house rival. Powering the Volkswagen ID.4 will be two electric motors at both axles with a combined output of approximately 198 bhp and it will have a range of 500 km on a single charge according to WLTP cycle.

Volkswagen comes with first ID.4 electric models in China

4th November 2020
"Volkswagen into the electric vehicle market in China to take on the likes of Tesla and Nio Inc."

Volkswagen launched two ID.4 electric sport-utility vehicle models in China on Tuesday, taking on Tesla Inc in the world's biggest auto market. The ID.4 CROZZ model is being made by Volkswagen’s joint venture with FAW Group, while the ID.4 X is produced by a separate venture with SAIC Motor.

The models mark the start of a major push by Volkswagen into the electric vehicle market in China to take on the likes of Tesla and Nio Inc.

The German group did not disclose the price of the two models. But a presentation at the product launch said the starting price of the SUVs, which are larger than Tesla’s China-made Model 3 sedans, would be less than 250,000 yuan ($37,450) after electric vehicle subsidies from the Chinese government.

The starting price for Model 3 sedans in China is currently 249,900 yuan, after subsidies.

The ID.4 models will have driving ranges of over 400 kilometers and offer over-the-air software updates, Volkswagen executives said at the event.

China chief Stephan Woellenstein said Volkswagen would roll out eight IDs. family electric models in China by 2023. Sales of electric, plug-in hybrid, and hydrogen-powered vehicles in China are forecast to rise to 20% of new car sales by 2025 from just 5% now, the State Council said on Monday. Around 1.1 million such vehicles are expected to be sold in China this year.
