Apple hires venture capitalist Josh Elman to help improve App Store discovery

22nd October 2021
"Elman is a prominent investor with a keen eye for soon-to-be-popular apps"

Apple has hired Josh Elman, a prominent venture capitalist and former vice president of product at stock-trading app Robinhood, to help it improve iOS app discovery in the App Store. Elman announced the news via his Twitter account on Monday, saying he’s also leaving his role as a board partner at the firm Greylock Partners and as a board member of prominent tech companies like Discord and Medium.

Elman joining the App Store team may help improve the iPhone maker’s relationship with developers after a rather rough year in which Apple’s stewardship of the App Store has been called into question by critics, rivals, and regulators. For instance, Elman is previously a board member of and investor in Houseparty, the chat app acquired by Fortnite creator Epic Games.

Epic is currently suing Apple over the removal of Fortnite from the App Store, and that’s only one of many controversies Apple has weathered over the last 12 months. Another is an ongoing European antitrust investigation.

Apple more recently extended an olive branch to the app development community by announcing a new small business program earlier this month that will cut its standard 30 percent App Store commission in half for developers making less than $1 million per year. The company has also tried to compromise with a number of app developers, most prominently Hey email client creator Basecamp, and tech rivals like Microsoft over complaints with certain App Store restrictions.

Elman doesn’t mention whether he will be working at all on developer relations, but he does say he will be focused on helping “customers discover the best apps for them.” Regardless, given his standing in the VC and software industries and his ability to identify apps before they become multibillion-dollar businesses, Elman is sure to provide some valuable insight into the next big iOS apps on the horizon.

Apple delays debut of anti-tracking tool in iPhone software

5th September 2020
"Apple is delaying a new privacy feature in the next version of its iPhone operating system"

Apple is delaying a new privacy feature in the next version of its iPhone operating system that will make it more difficult for app makers to track people online to help sell digital ads.

The decision outlined Thursday affects iOS 14, which is expected to be released as a free software upgrade to roughly a billion iPhone users later this month. Apple intended iOS 14 to automatically block tracking as soon as it came out, but the company now says it will hold back the tool until early next year.

The same safeguard was supposed be in the next operating systems for iPads and Apple TVs, too.

The feature would require apps to explicitly ask users to permission to collect and share data about their online behavior through a unique code that identifies every iPhone. That requirement raised fears that most people would block the tracking, making it more difficult for free apps to sell the ads that generate most of their revenue.

Currently, apps are automatically given a tracking code unless users of iPhones and other Apple devices go to the extra trouble of changing their privacy controls on their own.

Facebook, which runs the largest digital ad network behind Google, last week warned that the new privacy feature in iOS 14 threatened to deliver a major blow to many apps at a time they are already struggling amid a coronavirus-triggered recession.

Although Apple is postponing the new anti-tracking tool, the Cupertino, California, company emphasized that it shouldn’t be interpreted as a sign it is backing down from its outspoken commitment to protect the privacy of its customers as a “fundamental right.”

We want to give developers the time they need to make the necessary changes” to apps and advertising models, the company said in a statement.

Apple’s postponement disappointed those trying to combat the digital surveillance that’s inherent in online tracking, said Craig Danuloff, CEO of The Privacy Co., which recently introduced its own privacy app to help protect iPhone users from prying eyes.

One can only see this delay as harming millions of users who do not at all understand the level of tracking that’s going on,” Danuloff said.

Spotify now has its own iOS 14 widget

14th October 2020
"Quickly get back to whatever you were playing recently"

In the weeks since iOS14’s release, more and more apps have been adding new features that take advantage of what’s in Apple’s latest update. And now, Spotify is joining in. Today, the leading subscription music service announced the launch of its widget for iOS 14 and iPad OS 14.

Similar to Apple’s own widgets for Apple Music, Spotify’s serve as a means of quickly getting back to something you were recently listening to. You can pick between small and medium sizes, but Spotify doesn’t yet offer a large-sized iOS 14 widgets.

The Spotify iOS widgets will display up to five of the recently played artists, playlists, albums or podcasts covers,” a Spotify spokesperson said by email. “Users can tap on the covers to dive straight back into their content.” The small widget displays just whatever you were playing last while using the app.

To add Spotify widget to your Home Screen

  • Make sure you’ve updated to the latest version of Spotify. I’ve noticed that sometimes an app’s widgets won’t show up until after you open it following the update, so try that if you don’t see them at first.
  • Touch and hold a widget or an empty area on the device home screen until the apps jiggle
  • Tap the Add button (+) in the upper-left corner
  • Select the Spotify widget in the list
  • Select the size of the widget you wish to add from the 2 options available (1x1 small square or 2x1 rectangle), then tap “Add Widget
  • Place the widget, and tap “Done” to confirm

I’ve noticed some other useful widgets popping up recently, including from Dropbox, Otter, and other apps.
