Motorola Moto G9 Price and Specifications

23rd August 2020
"Flipkart has now listed the smartphone on its site ahead of the official launch."

Motorola is all set to launch the 9th Gen Moto G series smartphones -- the Motorola Moto G9 in India. The brand was set to announce the latest smartphone at 12:00 PM today. However, Flipkart has now listed the smartphone on its site ahead of the official launch, revealing the actual pricing and the specifications of the phone.

According to the Flipkart listing, the base model of the Motorola Moto G9 will cost Rs. 11,499, which is sort of a sweet spot for a smartphone that offers mid-range specs sheet with a quad-camera setup. One of the USPs of this device will definitely stock Android UI.

Seems like Flipkart has mistakenly revealed the Motorola Moto G9 Price and Specifications.

It will cost Rs. 11,499 and sales start 31st August.

According to the listing, the Moto G9 will offer a 6.5-inch water-drop style notch display with a 2.5D curved tempered glass. The phone will offer a 720p resolution screen with a bit of a chin at the bottom. The smartphone is based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 662 SoC with probably 4GB RAM and 64GB internal storage with a dedicated microSD card slot for additional storage expansion. On the software front, the device runs on stock Android 10 OS and is most likely to get updated to Android 11 in the coming days. The device has a quad-camera setup at the back with a 48MP primary sensor along with a dedicated ultra-wide angle lens, a macro lens, and a depth sensor. The device is likely to offer features like 1080p video recording and a couple more camera tricks to compete against the contemporaries. The Moto G9 will be fueled by a 5,000 mAh battery, probably with support for 18W fast charging and the phone is expected to come with a USB Type-C port. If the leaked price is true, then the device has to compete against the likes of the Redmi 9 Prime and the Realme Narzo 10.

New Apple Privacy Rules for its Mobile Devices

26th August 2020
"iOS 14 is designed to protect people’s privacy."

Facebook is pushing back on new Apple privacy rules for its mobile devices — and putting app developers in the middle.

Apple will soon require apps to ask users for permission to collect data on what devices they are using and to let ads follow them around on the internet. The social network said Wednesday that those rules could reduce what apps can earn by advertising through Facebook’s audience network.

Facebook said it expects “less impact” on its own advertising revenue than on the ad-supported businesses that rely on its audience network to promote their apps. The audience network allows Facebook and Instagram advertisers to place their ads elsewhere on the internet.

Apple says the latest version of its mobile operating system, iOS 14, is designed to protect people’s privacy. It will require apps to ask users for permission to collect and share data using a unique code that identifies their iPhones and iPads. The update is due later this fall.

Facebook said that because of this change, it will no longer collect the identifier for advertisers on its own apps for iOS 14 devices. It is also asking businesses to create new ad accounts dedicated solely to running ads for apps for iOS 14 users in order to comply with Apple’s new rules.

Apple, on the other hand, said it is intent on giving people more choice over how they want to be tracked by companies on the internet — and the ability to say no if they don’t.

David Chavern, CEO of the news-publisher trade group News Media Alliance, said the change is “more annoying than material.” But he added that it could still cost publishers money by making ads on their apps less valuable to advertisers.

The annoying part comes from the loss of revenue at a time when all revenue is important, and the unilateral nature of Apple’s decision,” he said. “They decide and the rest of the world just has to adapt.

Amazon wins FAA approval for drone packages delivery

31st August 2020
"Seattle-based Amazon is the third drone delivery service to win flight approval."

Getting an Amazon package delivered from the sky is closer to becoming a reality.

The Federal Aviation Administration said Monday it had granted Amazon approval to deliver packages by drones.

Amazon said that the approval is an “important step,” but added that it is still testing and flying the drones. It did not say when it expected drones to make deliveries to shoppers.

The online shopping giant has been working on drone delivery for years, but it has been slowed by regulatory hurdles. Back in December 2013, Amazon CEO and founder Jeff Bezos said in a TV interview that drones would be flying to customer’s homes within five years.

Last year, Amazon unveiled self-piloting drones that are fully electric, can carry 5 pounds of goods and are designed to deliver items in 30 minutes by dropping them in a backyard. At the time, an Amazon executive said deliveries to shoppers would be happening “within months,” but more than 14 months have passed since then.

Seattle-based Amazon is the third drone delivery service to win flight approval, the FAA said. Delivery company UPS and a company owned by search giant Google won approval last year.

Facebook to block news on Australian sites after new law

31st August 2020
"advertising income streams eroded by online competitors"

Facebook Inc (FB.O) on Tuesday said it would stop Australians sharing news content on its platforms if a proposal to make it pay local media outlets for their content becomes law, escalating tension with the Australian government.

Under Australia’s closely watched internet reform, the country will become the first to make the social media behemoth and Alphabet Inc’s (GOOGL.O) Google pay for news sourced from local providers under a royalty-style system.

Facebook’s plan to block the sharing of news on Australian user accounts, rather than pay royalties, puts the firm broadly in step with Google on the matter and pushes the prospect of an agreement with the government further out of reach.

Assuming this draft code becomes law, we will reluctantly stop allowing publishers and people in Australia from sharing local and international news on Facebook and Instagram,” Facebook Australia Managing Director Will Easton said in a blog post, referring to two Facebook-owned platforms.

“This is not our first choice - it is our last. It is the only way to protect against an outcome that defies logic and will hurt, not help, the long-term vibrancy of Australia’s news and media sector”.

Australian Treasurer Josh Frydenberg on Tuesday said the proposed law was in the national interest, followed 18 months of a public inquiry, and would create a more sustainable local media industry where the original content was paid for.

We don’t respond to coercion or heavy-handed threats wherever they come from,” Frydenberg said in an emailed response to Reuters’ request for comment.

Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) Chair Rod Sims, who is overseeing the proposed law, said Facebook’s response was “ill-timed and misconceived”, and that the proposal “simply aims to bring fairness and transparency to Facebook and Google’s relationships with Australian news media businesses”.

As the ACCC and the Government work to finalize the draft legislation, we hope all parties will engage in constructive discussions,” Sims said in a statement.

Bridget Fair, chief executive of Free TV Australia, a lobby group for free-to-air broadcasters, said Facebook’s plan amounted to “bullying” and that the U.S. firm would “say and do anything to avoid making a fair payment for news content”.

Australian Facebook users are being held to ransom as a tactic to intimidate the Australian government into backing down on this issue,” she said in a statement.

The proposed law was “the only reasonable way to even up the bargaining power between Facebook, Google, and Australian News Media Businesses,” Fair said.

Facebook’s Easton in his blog post called the proposed law “unprecedented in its reach”, and said the company could either remove news entirely or agree to pay publishers for as much content as they wanted at a price with no clear limits.

Unfortunately, no business can operate that way,” he wrote.

Like in most countries, Australia’s traditional media companies in recent years have seen their mainstay advertising income streams eroded by online competitors, and consumers shy away from paid subscriptions.

Last month, Google began an advertising campaign using pop-up ads on its main search page that said its free service would be “at-risk” and users’ personal data could be shared if the firm is made to pay news organizations for their content. The ACCC called the statements “misinformation”.
