Apple fixes some issues which may have allowed the hackers steal data from iPhones, iPads

9th May 2021
"Apple is close to solving the security flaws in the default iOS and iPadOS Mail app, which may have made millions of Apple devices vulnerable for 8 years"

Apple is close to solving the security flaws in the default iOS and iPadOS Mail app, which may have made millions of Apple devices vulnerable for 8 years.

First identified in the iOS 6, this vulnerability has been exploited by the hackers ever since.

ZecOps a San Francisco based mobile security forensics firm, discovered the vulnerability while it was investigating a sophisticated cyberattack against a client in 2019.

The firm claimed at the time that the vulnerability had been exploited in at least six security breaches in which the hackers were able to gain access to devices of high profile targets.

According to ZecOps the attack is triggered by sending a rigged email that may or may not require any interaction.

Once triggered the email then runs code in the context of the default mail apps which makes it possible to read modify or delete messages.

Apple has been unaware of this issue till February after ZecOps alerted the company.

The flaws have since been patched up in the latest beta releases of iOS 13 and a solution is will be available in next iOS update.

Apple Releases iOS 13.6.1 and iPadOS 13.6.1

12th August 2020
"Apple has released iOS 13.6.1 and iPadOS 13.6.1 to all supported devices."

Today Apple has released iOS 13.6.1 and iPadOS 13.6.1 to all supported devices. As the small increment in versioning implies, this build is all about fixing issues, and doesn't bring any new features to the table. Still, that doesn't mean you shouldn't install the update as soon as possible.

After all, it promises to get rid of green tint on some displays, which was caused by a thermal management issue, apparently. It also fixes an issue which disabled Exposure Notifications for some users.

Additionally, an issue that prevented unneeded system data files from being automatically deleted when storage got low has been addressed, which should be especially useful for owners of older iPhones and iPads with not a lot of storage space available to begin with.

The iOS 13.6.1 update is a 110MB download, and should be ready for install right away if you check for it through Settings > General > Software Update. You may have already been notified about it.

This is likely to be among the last updates to iOS 13, seeing as how iOS 14 is due to be released this fall - and probably as soon as next month, if we go by Apple's timelines in years past.

Amazon launches first fitness band in bid to take on Apple, Fitbit

27th August 2020
"The scope of growth in the fitness band market."

Amazon.com Inc on Thursday launched its first fitness band and app, Halo, as the e-commerce giant looks to take on Apple, Fitbit and Samsung in an increasingly crowded fitness tracker market.

The Halo band, which does not feature a display screen unlike most of its rivals, is priced at $99.99, while the app membership costs $3.99 per month, Amazon said.

The scope of growth in the fitness band market has prompted tech giants such as Apple Inc and Samsung to introduce many sophisticated features for health tracking, including electrocardiogram and blood pressure sensor.

In comparison, Amazon has featured a relatively new technology in the market called tone analysis, which reviews users’ tone during conversations. When enabled, a microphone on the band listens to detect emotions such as happiness, confusion or affection in the speaker’s tone.

It remains to be seen if consumers would embrace this feature or would it spark privacy concerns. Amazon said the technology was designed in a way that protects privacy.

The company said the water-resistant band, with a battery life of up to 7 days, also contains an accelerometer, a temperature sensor, a heart rate monitor and can measure body fat percentage.

Alphabet Inc-owned Google is also making strides into the fitness market. Google in November said it would buy Fitbit Inc for $2.1 billion, a deal that is currently under regulatory scrutiny.

The market is also crowded by cheaper offerings from China’s Huawei Technologies Co Ltd and Xiaomi Corp.

Sale of Apple AirTag halted in Australia amid safety concerns

6th May 2021
"Apple had recently launched the AirTags along with a new model of iPad Pro"

Apple had recently launched the AirTags along with a new model of iPad Pro.

While the product had been accepted by most of its international buyers, it was taken off the shelves of an Apple retailer in Australia due to safety concerns. The issue apparently is with the button-cell batteries that power AirTags which are too easy to remove even by a child, according to a Reddit user. Citing this reason, the products have been removed from the shelves by Officeworks in Australia until further notice.

The retailer now seeks guidance from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) on the issue. As per the general mandate by ACCC, if a supplier finds that a product they supply is unsafe, the supplier is expected to conduct a voluntary recall to advise consumers of the risk, address the safety issue, or remove the product from the market. In response, Apple highlighted that the AirTags meet its international child safety standards, including those in Australia.

The company said that the product requires a “two-step push and turn mechanism” to access the replaceable batteries. ACCC has not passed on any directives, as AirTags is still available on several online and offline channels in Australia. Apple, however possibly planning to update the product packaging with warnings to comply with the norms.
