Bad Habits to Avoid While Steering a Car

19th December 2021
"The first and foremost thing a good driver needs to know is to steer a car properly."

The first and foremost thing a good driver needs to know is to steer a car properly. It’s perhaps the most fundamental aspect of driving.

There are also some bad habits a driver learns while steering a car that should be stopped right now.

The major bad habits to be avoided while steering the car:

Proper Posture and Positioning

We see most of the drivers sitting too close to the steering wheel but this is a very bad habit.

You need to be close enough to reach the pedals and be able to push them with their whole foot, but not so close that you risk injuring your head, neck, or chest in a collision.

Hand Position

Your hand plays a very significant role while steering a car.  Don’t drive with one hand.

Also, don’t use the heel of your palm to turn the wheel as this will significantly reduce the control you have over the steering wheel.

Likewise, don’t hook your hand through the wheel, or hold it with the back of your hand facing forward and with your fingers pointing back at you because this can lead to damage to your arms in case of accidents.

Wheel Slide

A lot of people allow the wheel to slide through their hands and straighten itself when they start driving, but this means you aren’t in full control of the car.

It will get you marked down on your test and may lead to the car overcorrecting itself following a turn.

All you need to do is keep your hands in the correct position and work the wheel through them to return it to the correct position.

Being Lazy:

We see most of the drivers steering a wheel lazily resting their arm comfortably in the gearstick.

As you build experience in driving it can be easy to take your steering skills for granted.

Your hand positioning may change or you may start driving with an elbow leaning on an open window.

There are all sorts of ways that you can get lazy in your steering, so you should focus on not allowing that to happen if you want to stay as safe as possible when on the road.

Safety tips for pick-up truck drivers

10th December 2021
"Pick-up trucks are powerful, heavy-duty vehicles that help us haul, tow, and get us where we need to be but some important safety tips also should be observed while driving it."

Pick-up trucks are versatile vehicles. They can easily be used for day-to-day errands and running around town, but they are also great for work because of the amount of equipment they can accommodate in the back.

These powerful, heavy-duty vehicles help us haul, tow, and get us where we need to be. But some important safety tips should be observed.

Don’t Overload

One of the biggest advantages of owning a truck is the hauling capacity you get. But if you overload the truck, it can threaten your suspension and your engine.

Make sure you are clear about the load capacity of the truck, and never go over it.

Overloading the truck can also impact the handling of the truck, which can impair your response time on the road.

No passenger in the back of the cab

We’ve all seen images of pick-up trucks traveling down a country road with people – often kids – blissfully riding along in the back.

But it’s time to put an end to this dangerous and illegal behavior. Seatbelts and airbags have been placed in modern vehicles for a reason – to protect the driver and passengers in case of an accident.

The back of a pick-up truck offers no such protection. Even a minor collision or large pothole can toss a person out of the back of the truck, causing injury or putting them into the path of another vehicle.

Tools and equipment

It’s vitally important that you take the time to secure everything inside your truck properly.

That’s why tools and equipment offer so many solutions including truck racks, side and rear bars, tool racks, etc.

Find the product that best suits your needs and incorporate it into your daily safety routine.

At best, tools and other equipment might rattle around potentially becoming damaged or causing damage to your truck.

At worst, an item could fly out of the truck causing injury or death to another driver or bystander.

Watch out for blind spots

For drivers who operate heavy loads, being in such a large truck that’s so high off the ground can make it difficult to see cars behind or even next to their vehicle.

A blind spot is an area around a vehicle that cannot be directly seen by a driver.

Most of these accidents occur when drivers are changing lanes make sure you’re encouraging drivers to look over their shoulders and out the windows when changing lanes.

Child car safety tips

17th December 2021
"Whether you are out on a school run, completing errands, or taking a road trip, ensuring your children’s safety in and around vehicles is essential."

Whether you are out on a school run, completing chores, or taking a road trip, ensuring your children’s safety in and around vehicles is essential.

To keep your family safe on the road here are some child car safety tips which might be helpful for you and your family:

Activate the Child Safety Locks

Always activate the child safety locks on the doors and windows to prevent children from opening them while the car is moving.

This prevents children from getting injured or in different types of hazardous situations.

Children can unintentionally trigger a power window, pinning hands, arms, fingers, or even their heads, leading to harm.

So, it’s always best to have complete control over windows and doors in the driver’s hands.

Avoid Letting Kids Eat in the Car

While it seems unavoidable that snack time will coincide with a car trip at some point in your life, giving children food in the car can be dangerous.

For instance, if a child were to begin to choke on a piece of food after a particularly bumpy stretch of road, you may not notice right away and certainly would not be able to react immediately.

Try providing snacks before getting in the car and then offer toys for entertainment and distraction instead of relying on food.

Have Proper Child Restraints & Car Seats

Correctly fitting child restraints and car seats or boosters are essential for keeping your children safe on any car journey.

Ensure that you are using the proper sized seat for your child’s age, height, and weight and that the unit is secured to the vehicle’s seat correctly.

Because every car seat’s model is different, make sure you consult the manufacturer’s handbook and guidelines for your specific car type and check the installation regularly.

Don’t Let Kids Play Around Parked Cars

Children shouldn’t be allowed to play around parked cars, even if they are locked.

It creates a false sense of security, and if a vehicle’s parking brakes ever malfunction, your child would be in great danger.

It’s also good to instill safe car habits early on, as parked cars and a vehicle about to back up would look very similar to a child.

Ensure Safe Sleeping Positions

Though it may not seem crucial, always ensure your children are sleeping in safe positions when in the car.

Keep the child harness or seat belt secure even as they sleep, and ensure they are using the headrests attached to high-back boosters, car seats, or the vehicle’s seat.

Using headrests for neck support prevents the child’s head from falling towards their chest, jeopardizing their airways, and causing harm in an accident.
