Britain bans new Huawei 5G kit installation from September 2021

21st October 2021
"China has criticized that decision, while Huawei said last week it was disappointed Britain was looking to exclude it from the 5G roll-out after the publication of new laws that could see firms fined 100,000 pounds"

British telecommunications firms must not install a new Huawei 5G kit after September 2021, the government said on Monday, as part of a plan to purge the Chinese firm’s equipment from high-speed mobile networks.

Britain has already ordered all Huawei equipment to be removed from its 5G network by the end of 2027, falling in line with intelligence allies including the United States who say the firm poses security risks.

China has criticized that decision, while Huawei said last week it was disappointed Britain was looking to exclude it from the 5G roll-out after the publication of new laws that could see firms fined 100,000 pounds ($133,140) if they break the ban.

Monday’s announcement comes ahead of a debate over new telecoms legislation in parliament and fleshes out the timeline for equipment removal.

I am setting out a clear path for the complete removal of high-risk vendors from our 5G networks,” digital minister Oliver Dowden said in a statement.

This will be done through new and unprecedented powers to identify and ban telecom equipment which poses a threat to our national security.

The government also announced a new strategy to diversify the 5G supply chain, consisting of an initial 250 million pound investment, trials in collaboration with Japanese firm NEC, and the establishment of new research facilities.

Britain has already banned buying new Huawei 5G kit after the end of the year.

Britain said its July decision was related to concerns that U.S. sanctions on-chip technology could affect supply lines. Huawei said at the time the decision was disappointing, and about U.S. trade policy rather than security.

Huawei founder says US underestimates company

20th May 2019
"Company Spokesmen in Australia stated US actions "will not impact consumers""

Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei on Tuesday Spoke with Chinese Media and said the United States underestimates the telecom giant's strength. Speaking days after orders were issued by the U.S President Donald Trump to ban the company from doing business with U.S based corporations like Google, Intel and Qualcomm. "The current practice of US politicians underestimates our strength," Ren said, according to transcripts from state-run media.

"Huawei's 5G will absolutely not be affected. In terms of 5G technologies, others won't be able to catch up with Huawei in two or three years," he said.

Last week, Trump signed an executive order which blacklisted companies seen as "an unacceptable risk to the national security of the United States" - a move which was clearly aimed at Huawei. At the same time the US Commerce Department announced an effective ban on American companies selling or transferring US technology to Huawei, causing companies like Google to cut ties with Huawei. This move could cost arms and legs to the company as most of the devices in the world is powered by Google’s Android Operating System.

"The US 90-day temporary licence does not have much impact on us, we are ready," Ren said. After Commerce Department on Monday issued a 90-day lift on the ban by allowing temporary licences.

Ren said Huawei and Google are discussing how to respond to the ban, calling the US firm a "highly responsible company" and has asked the customers to stay at ease.

Another Company Spokesmen in Australia stated US actions "will not impact consumers" owning the device or planning to own one in the future.

Britain calls on Japan to ban Huawei

19th July 2020
"Britain calls on Japan to ban Huawei"

The UK last week decided to ban Chinese technology company Huawei from supplying 5G network equipment. Boris Johnson's government has decided to ban Huawei from the end of this year, December 31.

The decision was taken by the British government, which concluded that Huawei would increase its security risks. The government has instructed telecom service providers to replace existing Huawei equipment within the next seven years.

With the ban on Chinese company Huawei, which is considered to be the best in 5G technology, now the issue of who can bet on the expansion of 5G in the UK is under discussion. Meanwhile, the British government has urged countries including Japan to manufacture 5G equipment without using Huawei's equipment.

The UK's technology minister, Oliver Dowden, said the government was encouraging another company to compete with Huawei in the 5G device. Companies in Japan, Sweden, South Korea, and Finland have been urged to move forward with the equipment.

Huawei founder urges Honor subbrand become competitor after split

23rd October 2021
"We don’t have to drag innocent people into the water just because we suffer,” he said."

Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei called on employees of its departing Honor subbrand to strive to surpass its parent in a farewell speech as the tech giant sells the budget brand to keep its sanction-hobbled supply chains alive
Huawei Technologies said earlier this month it would sell Honor to a new entity called Shenzhen Zhixin New Information Technology, formed of its agents and dealers, so it could resume sourcing components currently restricted by U.S. sanctions.

The U.S. government says Huawei is a national security threat, a claim the company denies.

Wave after wave of severe U.S. sanctions against Huawei has led us to finally understand, certain American politicians want to kill us, not just correct us,” Ren said, according to a speech posted on a Huawei employee forum on Thursday.
While Huawei could overcome the difficulties, “millions” of employees at Honor’s agents and distributors around the world would lose their jobs as sales channels dried up, Ren’s speech said.

We don’t have to drag innocent people into the water just because we suffer,” he said.

Honor-brand smartphones made up 26% of the 51.7 million handsets Huawei shipped in July-September, according to consultancy Canalys. The company’s products also include laptops, tablet computers, smart TVs, and electronic accessories.
Huawei’s rivals have been ramping up production orders, anticipating they can gobble up market share while the giant is unable to produce new handsets, several industry sources recently told Reuters.

If Honor could resume production, it could retain market share, said Flora Tang, an industry analyst with Counterpoint Research.

Ren called on Honor to become Huawei’s biggest competitor after the “divorce,” and said toppling Huawei should “become your slogan for motivation”.

We are your competitors in the future,” he said.
