Google Maps update includes more detailed colorful images

18th August 2020
"Google maps to be more distinguished and detailed to help differentiate streets, crosswalk, pathways, etc."

In addition to helping you find your way, the latest Google Maps update will help you know more details about any given area at a glance. Starting this week, Google will shade maps with colors based on satellite imagery so you can easily tell the difference between forests and beaches. The update will be available worldwide and will cover a variety of natural and manmade features.

While the refined color palette is meant to help you understand regional features, a future update will offer more detail on a much smaller scale. Google says it will roll out more granular info on streets so you can see their exact size at scale in addition to the locations of sidewalks, crosswalks and pedestrian islands.

The more detailed street images will start rolling out in London, New York and San Francisco in the coming months.

Google announced both changes in a blog post on Tuesday, but didn't offer a timeline on a broader rollout of the more granular view.

The color mapping update will supposedly not just be for large landscape features either. Google will use computer imagery to show more coloration on areas such as cities, suburbs and rural towns.

Google launches Read Along offline app to help kids learn and read better

7th May 2020
"Google announced a learning app for kids called the Read-Along, an app designed especially for children above 5 years. The app would help the kids read and learn."

As of now one-third of the world under lockdown, Google has the perfect solution to keep the kids engaged at home. On Thursday, the tech giant announced a learning app for kids called the Read-Along, an app designed especially for children above 5 years. The app would help the kids read and learn better and it would also provide verbal and visual feedback to them.

Google CEO and Founder Sundar Pichai announced the app on Twitter and said, “Happy to share that Read-Along, our app to help kids grow their reading skills is now available in 9 languages across 180+ countries. Powered by #GoogleAI text-to-speech & speech recognition, it gives verbal & visual feedback as kids read stories out loud.”

Google has launched a free Android app called Read-Along to enhance the reading skills of children across 180 countries.“Read-Along helps kids independently learn and build their reading skills with the help of an in-app reading buddy named Diya. As kids read out loud, Diya uses Google’s text-to-speech and speech recognition technology to detect if a student is struggling or successfully reading the passage. She gives them positive and reinforcing feedback along the way, just as a parent or teacher would. Children can also tap Diya at any time for help pronouncing a word or a sentence,” Zohair Hyder, Engineering Lead, Google said in a blog post.

This app can be of great help to parents who are struggling to keep their kids engaged. It is an interactive app that can teach new things to the children as Google plans to add a variety of books and features to the app. Kids will get stars and badges as they learn and that would encourage them to read and play more on the app.

“Parents can create profiles for multiple readers, who tap on their photo to learn at their own pace and to track their individual progress. Read-Along will personalize the experience by recommending the right difficulty level of stories and games based on their reading level performance,” Hyder wrote.

Google has paid utmost importance to the safety and privacy of the children who use the app. The app will not get any ads or in-app purchases. Once you download the app, you won't need any wifi connection or mobile data to use the app hence it will not give any unsupervised access to the internet and everything can well be under parental control.

Youtube Music to replace Google Play Music by December 2020

4th August 2020
"Users will no longer be able to purchase and pre-order music or upload and download music from Google Play Music through Music Manager."

In a blog post published by Youtube, Youtube Music will replace Google Play Music by December 2020. Over the past couple of months, Youtube have been welcoming Google Play Music listeners to Youtube Music. Now users will have the opportunity to transfer their music libraries from Google Play Music to Youtube Music in that timeframe.

Secondly, in the coming months, Google play music users will no longer be able to stream from or use the Google Play Music app. Additionally, Youtube are making changes to the Google Play store and Music Manager.

Youtube will be holding onto things like your playlists, uploads, purchases, likes and more until December 2020 to make your transfer to YouTube Music easier. Users who wish to transfer their music libraries from Google Play Music to YouTube Music, can do so through December 2020, after which their Google Play Music libraries will no longer be available.

Simple transfer and additional changes to Music Manager

Starting in late August, users will no longer be able to purchase and pre-order music or upload and download music from Google Play Music through Music Manager.

To ensure users don’t lose any of their content, they’ll need to use the simple transfer tool to migrate any purchases over to YouTube Music or use Google Takeout to export data and download their purchased and uploaded music. Once the Music Store is no longer available, users will continue to be able to upload any tracks purchased elsewhere to YouTube Music.

For Google Play listeners that have not yet started the transfer process over to YouTube Music, now’s the time. Listeners can also choose to delete their Google Play Music data, and Youtube will clearly notify all users before they lose access to their Google Play Music library and data.

Over the last few years, Youtube have worked to build a fantastic fan experience on YouTube Music, merging the very best of Google Play Music with the very best of YouTube. For users who decide not to transfer their Google Play Music account to YouTube music, Youtube will be sure to cancel your subscription at the end of your billing cycle so you aren't paying for a subscription. And, of course, Youtube will be sure to notify all users ahead of subscriptions being cancelled.

Google to merge video-calling apps Duo and Meet: Report

15th August 2020
"Google announced in May that Google Meet will be free for everyone till September 30 including enterprises."

Google is reportedly working towards replacing the video-calling app Duo with Meet in due course of time. The decision was made by the G Suite head Javier Soltero who took over the position earlier this year in May. According to 9to5Google, Soltero announced to his employees that having two video-calling apps does not make sense.

Apparently, the combination of the two apps is in process and has been codenamed as ‘Duet”. Google Meet has posed as a tough competitor to video-conferencing app Zoom which has been a hit among office-goers as ‘work from home’ became a new form. Zoom was also used for casual family and friends meeting who were unable to meet each other in-person.

Reportedly, the Google Duo team is surprised by the recent series of events as the app was widely used during the lockdown. Especially after Google announced in May that there was a total of three billion minutes of call duration in the month and close to three million daily new users. The engineers who worked on the app either left or were shifted to the Meet team.

We’re fully invested in Duo, which has seen astonishing growth during the pandemic. People around the world are relying on video calling more than ever, and we have no plans to interrupt that. We’ll continue to invest in building new Duo features and delivering a delightful experience for our users, customers and partners. We brought the Duo organization under Javier Soltero’s leadership in May, and it follows that we’re looking at ways that our video calling products can improve alongside one another,Google said in a statement.

Earlier, Duo let the users call anyone from their contact list. Then, they added the ability to call people using their email addresses. However, the update in April helped improve video quality followed by 32-person calls, a family mode, and the more popular link-based invites.

Google Meet has been a part of G Suite from the start. After Zoom’s popularity grew manyfold, Google announced in May that Google Meet will be free for everyone till September 30 including enterprises. Google Meet’s integration with the Gmail app made it more accessible and easy to use.
