  • The Nokia 8 V 5G UW is HMD’s first high-end phone sold by Verizon

The Nokia 8 V 5G UW is HMD’s first high-end phone sold by Verizon

10th November 2020
"Basically the Nokia 8.3 5G but with mmWave"

HMD’s Nokia is launching the $699 Nokia 8 V 5G UW, the company’s second 5G device. In a major shift for HMD, it’ll be sold through Verizon, making the Nokia 8 V HMD’s first high-end device that’ll be available through a US carrier.

Despite the new branding, though, the Nokia 8 V is effectively a Verizon-branded version of HMD’s first 5G phone, the Nokia 8.3 5G, that it announced in March. The Nokia 8.3 5G finally launched in the US in September as an unlocked device for the same $699 price, although there’s a key difference between it and the Verizon model: the Nokia 8.3 5G only supports sub-6GHz 5G, while the Nokia 8 V 5G UW supports both sub-6GHz and mmWave 5G networks.

As for the actual Nokia 8 V, it visually appears identical to the 8.3 5G, although it comes in a gray color scheme instead of a blue one. Otherwise, expect the same 6.81-inch display (with a hole-punch camera and a Nokia-branded chin on the bottom) and a prominent quad-camera array on its rear, with a main 64-megapixel sensor, a 12-megapixel ultrawide camera, a 2-megapixel macro camera, and a 2-megapixel depth sensor.

Inside, you’ll find a Snapdragon 765G processor with an integrated 5G modem, a 4,500mAh battery, 6GB of RAM, and 64GB of internal storage — those last two numbers mark a downgrade from the unlocked Nokia 8.3 5G, which offers 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage.

Rounding things out are a power button (with an integrated fingerprint sensor), a customizable voice assistant button, USB-C for charging, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. It’ll ship with Android 10, although HMD promises that an Android 11 update is already in the works. Absent are any wireless charging features or waterproofing.

The company has been building toward this moment for some time, at the beginning of 2019 when HMD’s Nokia started to sell phones through carriers again. Until now, though, those phones have skewed toward the low end of the hardware spectrum, but the Nokia 8 V promises to offer a more premium device.

The question is whether HMD’s $699 device will be able to muster sufficient competition to other major devices from more established premium brands when customers are making their choice of a new phone at a Verizon store.

The $700 price point is a crowded one, with a lot of great phones like the $699 Pixel 5 (and its top-tier camera), the $699.99 Galaxy S20 FE and its high-end features, or the $729 iPhone 12 mini (which offers flagship features at a matching $699 price when purchased through a carrier like Verizon) — all of which offer 5G and similar (if not better) features than HMD’s option.

Nokia and NASA building first ever cellular network on Moon

18th October 2020
"Nokia selected by NASA to build first ever cellular network on the Moon"

Nokia selected by NASA to build a first-ever cellular network on the Moon. Nokia has announced further details after being named by NASA as a partner to advance “Tipping Point” technologies for the Moon, deploying the first LTE/4G communications system in space and helping pave the way towards a sustainable human presence on the lunar surface.19 October 2020

  • LTE/4G technology promises to revolutionize lunar surface communications by delivering reliable, high data rates while containing power, size, and cost.
  • Communications will be a crucial component for NASA's Artemis program, which will establish a sustainable presence on the Moon by the end of the decade.

Nokia Bell Labs’ pioneering innovations will be used to build and deploy the first ultra-compact, low-power, space-hardened, end-to-end LTE solution on the lunar surface in late 2022. Nokia is partnering with Intuitive Machines for this mission to integrate this groundbreaking network into its lunar lander and deliver it to the lunar surface. The network will self-configure upon deployment and establish the first LTE communications system on the Moon.

The network will provide critical communication capabilities for many different data transmission applications, including vital command and control functions, remote control of lunar rovers, real-time navigation, and streaming of high definition video. These communication applications are all vital to long-term human presence on the lunar surface.

Nokia’s LTE network – the precursor to 5G – is ideally suited for providing wireless connectivity for any activity that astronauts need to carry out, enabling voice and video communications capabilities, telemetry, and biometric data exchange, and deployment and control of robotic and sensor payloads.

Marcus Weldon, Chief Technology Officer at Nokia and Nokia Bell Labs President, said: "Leveraging our rich and successful history in space technologies, from pioneering satellite communication to discovering the cosmic microwave background radiation produced by the Big Bang, we are now building the first-ever cellular communications network on the Moon. Reliable, resilient, and high-capacity communications networks will be key to supporting sustainable human presence on the lunar surface. By building the first high-performance wireless network solution on the Moon, Nokia Bell Labs is once again planting the flag for pioneering innovation beyond the conventional limits.”

Nokia’s lunar network consists of an LTE Base Station with integrated Evolved Packet Core (EPC) functionalities, LTE User Equipment, RF antennas, and high-reliability operations and maintenance (O&M) control software. The solution has been specially designed to withstand the harsh conditions of the launch and lunar landing and to operate in the extreme conditions of space. The fully integrated cellular network meets very stringent size, weight, and power constraints of space payloads in an extremely compact form factor.

The same LTE technologies that have met the world’s mobile data and voice needs for the last decade are well suited to provide mission-critical and state-of-the-art connectivity and communications capabilities for any future space expedition. LTE is a proven commercial technology, has a large ecosystem of technology and component suppliers, and is deployed worldwide. Commercial off-the-shelf communications technologies, particularly the standards-based fourth-generation cellular technology (4G Long Term Evolution (LTE)) are mature, proven reliable, and robust, easily deployable, and scalable. Nokia plans to supply commercial LTE products and provide technology to expand the commercialization of LTE, and to pursue space applications of LTE’s successor technology, 5G.

Through the Tipping Point solicitation, NASA’s Space Technology Mission Directorate seeks industry-developed space technologies that can foster the development of commercial space capabilities and benefit future NASA missions. The public-private partnerships established through Tipping Point selections combine NASA resources with industry contributions, shepherding the development of critical space technologies. NASA plans to leverage these innovations for its Artemis program, which will establish sustainable operations on the Moon by the end of the decade in preparation for an expedition to Mars.

As a market leader in end-to-end communication technologies for service providers and enterprise customers globally, Nokia develops and provides mission-critical networks adopted by airports, factories, industrial, first-responders, and the harshest mining operations on Earth, for automation, data collection, and reliable communications. By deploying its technologies in the most extreme environments, Nokia Bell Labs will validate the solution’s performance and technology readiness level, and further, optimize it for future terrestrial and space applications.

Nokia 8800, Nokia 6300 phones from the 00s might return with 4G support

4th November 2020
"HMD Global might be working on the 4G, Wi-Fi calling supported models of the Nokia 8800 and Nokia 6300."

Nokia has not shied away from capitalizing on the nostalgia factor by resurrecting older models that were quite popular back during their heydays. Joining that revamped set of phones will soon be the Nokia 8000 and Nokia 6300. The 4G models of these two phones from the noughties have been spotted online, which could mean that HMD Global will bring the improved versions of the popular Nokia 8800 and Nokia 6300.

Telia, a Swedish telecom operator, recently refreshed the list of devices that will support Wi-Fi calling. While the list has mentioned some of the latest smartphones from Samsung and OnePlus, two phones have showed up on the list out of the blue. This list was first spotted by a German tech website called Winfuture. The mention of the two old Nokia phones in the list means they might soon return with 4G capabilities and Wi-Fi calling. While the Nokia 6300 is a straight-up revamp to the old model, the Nokia 8000 is another addition to the Nokia 8000 series.

While an alternate scenario could be that the telco listed these names by mistake, there is a fat chance that would have happened. So, the only option to stick with right now, considering HMD Global’s track record, is to believe that the two popular phones from the noughties are coming back with enhancements. The Nokia 6300 4G and Nokia 8000 4G, as they have been listed, will join the Nokia 8110 4G, Nokia 3310 4G, and others.

Some leaked images in August showed a Nokia device that looked uncannily similar to the Nokia 6300. If both devices are the same, we might have already had our first look at the upcoming Nokia phone. Also, in which case, the Nokia phone may have passed the FCC certification with the codename Leo.

The specifications of these two Nokia phones are not clear at the moment. But they might ship with KaiOS, much like the other phones that were brought back to life by HMD Global recently. The older models of these two phones used to run S40 OS. But apart from the software, the company is likely to keep the skeleton of these phones intact on the newer models.

This means we could see the Nokia 6300 4G sporting that 2MP camera on the back, a T9 keyboard, and a retro design that Nokia phones were known for. The Nokia 8000 4G could look like the Nokia 8800 luxury device with a metal body with a sliding display module, which when extended opens the T9 keyboard embedded underneath. HMD Global has not said anything on these phones yet. This is why readers are advised to take this piece of information with a pinch of salt.
