Snap chat Spotlight paying users $1m a day for viral hits

22nd October 2021
"Messaging app Snapchat is offering a share of $1m (£750,000) to its users every day as it tries to compete with TikTok on viral videos."

Its new Spotlight feature will use an algorithm to recommend "the most engaging" posts to watch based on what a user is interested in. Snapchat says the feature will include people with "private, personal accounts" as well as its biggest stars. The $1m-a-day payment would run until at least the end of the year, it said. But if successful it could potentially continue into 2021, the company said.

Videos have to be submitted to the scheme to be eligible for the earnings. How much a video makes for its owner depends on a complicated formula - but includes how many views the video has.

Snapchat has not, however, said how many people the $1m a day will be split between, or what the maximum individual earnings might be. Users have to be 16 or over to be paid and obey a host of rules around copyright, sponsorship, and drugs and alcohol, among other things. The company says it will moderate the feed for violations - and for anyone attempting to game the algorithm.

"We actively monitor for fraud to ensure that we only account for authentic engagement with Snaps," it warned. The payment system reflects the competitive market for the latest viral hits, according to Ben Wood, an analyst at CCS Insight.

"Snapchat lives and dies by how engaged users are with its content," he explained.

"Surfacing viral content and rewarding the creators that conceived that content is a sensible way to sustain its business, particularly in the light of the growing threat from TikTok and others."

Snapchat hits nearly 250m daily users. Snapchat rose to prominence for its 24-hour disappearing messages almost a decade ago. In the years since, the idea has been co-opted by competitors such as Instagram Stories and, most recently, Twitter's Fleets. At the same time, TikTok has emerged as a favorite platform for original viral content, fuelled in part by its focus on easily adding music to posts.

Despite the competitive market for users' attention, Snapchat recently announced that its daily user numbers had surged to almost 250 million during the pandemic. And while TikTok has faced its own challenges this year - most notably the constant threat of being banned by US President Donald Trump's administration - one of its stars became the first to reach more than 100 million followers.

Reels, TikTok equivalent feature of Instagram

12th November 2019
"Feature similar to TikTok where a user can select an audio and lipsync to that audio being tested in Brazil."

Everyone knows story section of Instagram and Facebook. But very few know that this feature was a direct knock-off of Snapchat stories. Now Instagram is looking into a new feature that is very similar to TikTok.

Feature similar to TikTok where a user can select an audio and lipsync to that audio is being tested by Instagram in Brazil. Feature is named Reels and will give access to a huge catalog of music to choose from. Reels will live inside Instagram app along with other story modes like Boomerang and Super-Zoom allowing the user to record 15-sec clip and share it as stories. Reels is live in Brazil for both Android and iOS users but no words on when other locations will get this feature yet.

Instagram makes old stories easier to find alongside new anti-bullying features

5th October 2020
"Browse your old stories via new map and calendar views"

Instagram is adding new features to help users find old stories posted over the last three years and to reduce abusive behavior. The stories archive now includes a new monthly calendar view, which shows the days you posted each story, alongside a map which shows story locations, TechCrunch reports. Instagram also announced a pair of new anti-bullying features that attempt to automatically hide potentially abusive comments while discouraging users from posting them in the first place.

Given that stories are designed to disappear automatically after 24 hours, it’s likely surprising to many that Instagram has an archive of them going back years. The stories archive actually dates back to 2017 — the new calendar and map just offer a better way to find old stories. The archive is private, visible only to you, but there’s an option to re-share them publicly on your profile or stories feed. The new Stories Map and monthly calendar view are rolling out now and can be accessed from the “archive” menu under your user profile.

As part of Instagram’s latest round of anti-bullying features, the service will start automatically hiding comments similar to those that have been reported. These comments won’t be deleted entirely, however, and can still be viewed by tapping the “View Hidden Comments” button. Instagram is also adding warnings for users who repeatedly post potentially offensive comments to try and encourage them to think twice before posting, in an expansion of an initiative launched last year. Both new features are currently being tested on the platform.

Instagram’s announcement of the new features coincides with the service’s 10th anniversary. As part of the celebrations, Instagram has added an easter egg that lets you revisit its old app icons on iOS and Android. It can be accessed by doing a long swipe down on the settings menu, after which the old app icons can be brought back into active duty.

Facebook Messenger and Instagram now lets you send disappearing messages

12th November 2020
"The new Snapchat-inspired mode arrives on Facebook messaging products."

Facebook’s latest take on a signature Snapchat feature is arriving today, and it’s called Vanish Mode. First announced as part of its big September redesign of Messenger, Vanish Mode is an ephemeral messaging mode for both Facebook Messenger and Instagram that will you let you send texts, photos, voice messages, emoji, and stickers that disappear immediately once they’re viewed by other parties and the chat window is closed.

Some users may have already noticed Vanish Mode in the chat settings on Messenger, as Facebook has been rolling out it slowly to some users since the redesign was announced two months ago. And on Instagram, some elements of Vanish Mode are already part of the core direct messaging feature set, including disappearing photos and videos once a piece of media has been viewed. Vanish Mode is similar in ways to Messenger’s existing secret conversation mode that lets you enter an end-to-end encrypted chat that’s saved only on your device, although the new mode is designed to delete anything sent forever once it’s been viewed.

For Facebook, ephemeral messaging still represents a way to attract younger smartphone users who have flocked to chat apps and platforms where they don’t have to post publicly and risk being haunted by social media posts later on in life. While Snapchat popularized ephemeral messaging among US teens with Stories and its DM design, Facebook has since adopted many of its rival’s features and implemented them throughout Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp for users of all age groups around the world.

Vanish Mode is just the latest of Facebook’s takes on the trend and a notable addition considering CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced last year his company would strategically shift away from the News Feed and public posts and more toward private messaging and groups.

Vanish Mode will appear in both apps as a distinct option you can turn on and off in the settings of any particular chat message. You can also enter the mode by swiping up on a chat window (Vanish Mode is only available for one-on-one chats at the moment, and not group threads). The mode will then enable disappearing messages and other chat interactions, with the option to turn it off located at the top of the chat window or by swiping down again.

Facebook says the mode will be opt-in only, meaning you have to agree to enter Vanish Mode once another user in the chat has enabled it. Messenger and Instagram will also notify you when a screenshot of a chat is taken while the mode is enabled. Facebook says you can report individuals over Vanish Mode chat conduct, although it’s unclear how much of the conversation Facebook will be able to review for violations.

Vanish Mode should be available for Messenger in the US as well as some other countries starting today, Facebook says. And it will go live on Instagram in the US and other countries at a later date.
