The Wristcam is a camera for your Apple Watch

24th October 2021
"The device has been in the works for about four years following a crowdfunding campaign"

A strap for an Apple Watch equipped with front- and rear-facing cameras are finally launching after nearly four years in development. The Wristcam has an 8-megapixel camera that can shoot 1080p video and take stills in 4K resolution and a 2-megapixel camera for selfies. The company says you’ll also be able to use it as a video walkie-talkie with real-time live-streaming.

Those might be serviceable cameras, but they’re not likely to replace your iPhone camera. The company sent over a sample of images shot by the Wristcam, which are pretty decent if a bit underwhelming in the details.

Wristcam, originally called CMRA, shows images on the Watch screen but has a separate battery, which the company says can last an entire day. You can take images and video just by pressing a button on the band, and it will sync them to your iPhone automatically when you drop it on its magnetically attached charging cable at night.

The device has 8GB of memory for photo and video storage. The camera connects with the Watch via Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and with the iPhone via Bluetooth 4.2, 5.0, and Wi-Fi.
The Wristcam band weighs 23 grams, about half the weight of the lightest Apple Watch, and comes in interchangeable colors, including noir, blanc, gray, rose, and sage. Both cameras have LEDs that light up when a photo or video is being shot, so it’s clear when the device is in photo-taking mode. It’s controlled by one multifunctional button.

According to CEO Ari Roisman, the Wristcam can take up to 20 seconds to share a photo directly from the Watch over Bluetooth but will sync directly with a connected iPhone. The ability to share photos directly from the Watch won’t be available at launch but in a future update, Roisman told The Verge.
Roisman told The Verge the company is focused on shipping units to customers who supported the original crowdfunding campaign, which pre-sold 10,000 units. The lengthy delay stemmed from design challenges, Roisman said, but customers who have stuck with the company should receive their Wristcams by the holidays. Since it’s been four years, the company said it offered refunds to any of the original crowd funders who wanted their money back.

The Wristcam is taking direct reservations from customers on its website for $299. The first direct-to-customer units will ship in March 2021, the company says.

EU to force manufacturers in adapting USB-C (USB Type-C )chargers in their smartphones

17th January 2020
"Europe Union are in process of holding a vote to enforce a standardized USB-C charger for all smartphones and and other similar, small electronic devices sold within the region."

Europe Union is in process of holding a vote to enforce a standardized USB-C charger for all smartphones and other similar, small electronic devices sold within the region. Even though USB-C charger is slowly becoming the standard of charging and data transfer, the EU wants manufacturers to adopt the same standard across the industry.

The introduction of USB Type-C has energized standardization talks as it incorporates many of the advantages (reversibility of connection, data transmission rates, and charging speeds) used to justify the existence of proprietary charging connectors.

A similar initiative first introduced in 2014, allowed the continued sale of phones with proprietary connectors as long as they used a standard USB port to connect to a charging adapter due to difference in compliance and due to that voluntary compliance, the initiative had proven ineffective. Many are in favor of the new regulation and although the final bill is yet to be approved, the initial report suggests the EU is considering mandatory compliance this time around.

Even though the majority of the manufacturers have already started using USB-C, many of the phones still come with micro-USB and proprietary connectors. Apple is objecting this push for standardization law, as it still uses its proprietary Lightning connector on the iPhone and is expected to come out with phones sporting USB-C in 2021.

Apple announces iPhone 12 mini 5G phones

13th October 2020
"Apple claims it’s the smallest, thinnest, and lightest 5G phone in the world."

Apple is announcing a new iPhone 12 mini today. It’s the first time Apple has used the “mini” moniker on its iPhone line, after using it on the iPod mini, iPad mini, and Mac mini previously. The new iPhone 12 mini has a 5.4-inch screen, which means Apple has squeezed a larger display than the 4.7-inch screen found on this year’s iPhone SE into an iPhone 12 mini handset that’s smaller overall.

Apple has made the $729 iPhone 12 mini smaller by removing Touch ID and replacing it with Face ID, alongside a significant reduction in bezels around the display. Apple claims it’s the smallest, thinnest, and lightest 5G phone in the world.

Like the iPhone 12, the iPhone 12 mini uses Apple’s A14 Bionic, a 5nm chip with better energy efficiency and performance than the A13. It includes a six-core CPU (two high and four low) that Apple claims are 50 percent faster than the A13 chip. It also includes a four-core GPU, which Apple claims will enable “console-quality games.”

The iPhone 12 mini shares the rest of the main iPhone 12 specs and design, too. The iPhone 12 mini has flat aluminum sides that now match the iPad Pro and iPad Air (and are similar to the iPhone 4 from 10 years ago).

The shared specs include a 12-megapixel f/1.6 main camera — the fastest aperture in any iPhone yet — and a 12MP ultrawide. Apple has improved low-light performance on the iPhone 12 mini, and the front-facing camera will also include its own Night Mode.

The display glass on the iPhone 12 mini is also coated with what Apple describes as a “Ceramic Shield” for better durability. Water and dust resistance has also been improved to an IP68 rating.

Apple is also using the new MagSafe magnet system on the iPhone 12 mini. It supports wireless chargers (including Qi-enabled devices), case accessories, and even leather wallets that all snap onto the rear of the device.

Apple’s iPhone 12 mini is priced starting at $729 and will be available in five color options: blue, green, black, white, and red, Preorders for the iPhone 12 mini will begin on November 6th at 5AM PT / 8AM ET, with the handset shipping on November 13th.

Correction: Apple originally announced the iPhone 12 Mini would cost $699. The MSRP is actually $729. That lower price only applies after a $30 discount from specific carriers.

22nd October 2021
"Customers buying AirPods or other Apple products like Apple Pencil (2nd generation), iPad, and iPod touch from the Apple store can get their products customized by getting personal messages engraved on them at no additional cost."

Apple recently launched the online Apple Store in India. Apple now gives the option to Indian customers shopping from the Apple Store to personalize products by getting text or emojis engraved on them at no additional cost. Customers have to select the ‘add free engraving’ option after they have selected the product they want to purchase from the Apple Store. They can then add information about the personalization as per their preference. Customers can get emojis, names, initials, phone number, or date engraved as per their preference.

After entering the required information, customers can checkout paying only for the product they purchased as all the engravings are free. They can get these engravings on AirPods Pro, AirPods with Wireless Charging Case, AirPods with Charging Case, iPad Pro, iPad Air, iPad, iPad mini, Apple Pencil (2nd generation), and iPod touch.
Add a personal touch or special message to AirPods, Apple Pencil (2nd generation), iPad, and iPod touch with free engraving. And now with all-new options available for AirPods, you can choose from Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Tamil, Kannada, Gujarati, Telugu, English, or even emojis. Only at Apple,” Apple’s website reads.

Customers can also personalize Apple products if they plan on gifting it to someone. Alternatively, they can send the products in a gift-wrapped box and customized card, or a special message on the packing slip.

In India, Apple launched its online Apple Store in September and now delivers the products to the customers without the involvement of any third party, as it did so previously.
Apple also unveiled Apple One bundled subscriptions in India in October. Apple gives six services under the Apple One subscription such as Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple Arcade, Apple News+, Apple Fitness+, and iCloud. The Apple Fitness+ powered by Apple Watch will be available later in 2020.

The individual plan subscription for Apple One comes for Rs 195 per month and gives Apple Music, Apple TV Plus, Apple Arcade along with 50 GB storage of iCloud. The family plan for Apple One subscription comes for Rs 365 per month and gives Apple TV Plus, Apple Arcade, and 200GB of iCloud storage that can be shared with up to six family members.
