Apple may shift iPad MacBook manufacturing from China to Vietnam

20th October 2021
"The shift is said to be in response to the trade war"

Apple has asked Foxconn to move some iPad and MacBook manufacturing capacity to Vietnam, Reuters reports. The assembly lines are set to start production in the first half of next year at Foxconn’s Bac Giang province, according to Reuters’ source, who notes that Apple wants to diversify its supply chain due to the ongoing trade disputes between the US and China.

Reuters’ report doesn’t state which iPad or Mac models will be assembled in Vietnam, nor what proportion of Apple’s total production will shift out of China. But these wouldn’t be the first Apple products to be assembled in Vietnam — Apple started producing AirPods Pro units there earlier this year. Apple has also used India for the production of certain iPhone models for a while, although that mostly predates the US-China trade war and helps the company meet local import regulations.

Nikkei reported earlier this week that Foxconn is planning a $270 million investment in Vietnam to expand its manufacturing capacity. The Taiwanese company is said to be moving more than 30 percent of its production lines outside China.

Apple expected to unveil updates to Watches, iPads

14th September 2020
"Analysts expect an October event for iPhones."

Apple Inc AAPL.O will broadcast an event from its Cupertino, California campus on Tuesday where analysts expect it to show updated Apple Watches, iPads, and other devices while reserving an iPhone launch for next month.

Despite pandemic-related disruptions that Apple executives have said will push the release of the iPhone into October, Apple has posted earnings that beat expectations for the past two quarters powered in part by strong sales of work-from-home items such as iPads and laptops and accessories that pair with its flagship smartphones.

While analysts expect an October event for iPhones, Apple teased at new watches with a “Time Flies” caption for its Tuesday event invite sent last week, and analysts expect a new flagship Apple Watch Series 6. Apple has come to dominate the market for smartwatches, with Strategy Analytics reporting in May that Apple had 55% market share as of the first quarter.

Because the watch must be paired with an iPhone, analysts believe it plays a strong role in helping Apple retain customers, with longtime Apple Watcher Gene Munster of Loup Ventures saying last week that the 9% of iPhone owners that now own an Apple Watch could expand to 50% in the next decade.

Analysts expect Apple to dive deeper into health and fitness features with the watch. Bloomberg previously reported here that Apple plans to unveil a service offering virtual fitness classes in which the watch could play a role as part of a larger bundle of content and services.

Some analysts also believe Apple might build a way to sense changes in blood oxygen into its newest watches, building on health sensing capabilities after adding a way to take measurements similar to electrocardiogram with its Series 4 watches. However, many prominent Apple analysts and watchers have not confirmed the feature. Apple rival Fitbit Inc FIT.N introduced a way to measure changes in blood oxygen earlier this year.

Apple declined to comment on future products.

Analysts also expect Apple to unveil an update to its iPad Air, which sits between the high-end iPad Pro that has a 3D sensor for augmented reality content and the base model iPad aimed at the education market.

Analysts also expect a new set of over-ear headphones called “AirPods Studio” to complement the company’s AirPods and AirPods Pro wireless earbuds, which have become runaway hits for the company.

While AirPods Studio will be a rounding error in terms of revenue contribution, they represent yet another example of the company integrating a new product into its hardware-software ecosystem,” Munster wrote in a blog post last week.

Analysts also expect a set of small devices called AirTags, meant to be attached to devices so their owners locate them using Bluetooth and other wireless sensors. Those devices will compete against Tile Inc, an independent company founded in 2012 that created a similar product and has publicly criticized Apple for putting roadblocks in its iPhone operating system that make products from third-party developers harder to use than Apple’s own products.

Apple's subscription bundle of news, music and services to launch

31st October 2020
"Bundle varies by geography but generally combines Apple's news, music, video and cloud storage offerings."

Apple One, the bundle of Apple Inc's AAPL.O paid online services, will launch on Friday, Chief Executive Tim Cook told in an interview.

The bundle varies by geography but generally combines Apple's news, music, video, and cloud storage offerings, putting it in fiercer competition with music rivals such as Spotify Technology SA SPOT.N and television content rivals Netflix Inc NFLX.O, Walt Disney Co DIS.N, and AT&T Inc's T.N HBO. Apple in September also announced a paid fitness service called Apple Fitness+ that competes for the first time with some elements of Peloton Interactive Inc's PTON.O offerings.

We’re on target to launch Apple Fitness+ later in the year,” Cook told on Thursday.

Cook on Thursday also said Apple now has 585 million subscribers on its platforms, up from 550 million the previous quarter.

We are now very confident that we’re going to not only reach but exceed our target of over 600 million for the calendar year,” Cook told Reuters.

Apple also reported better-than-expected quarterly earnings on Thursday.

Services revenue rose 16.3% to $14.5 billion, compared with analyst estimates of $14 billion, according to IBES data from Refinitiv.

The Apple One bundle will cost $15 per month for an individual plan or $20 per month for a family plan and include television, music, and games. Apple is also offering a bundle for $30 per month that adds news, fitness service, and more storage.

The MacBook Air is once again the benchmark by which other laptops will be measured

22nd November 2020
"The fact that the M1 chip in a MacBook Air was able to perform better than an Intel Core i9 processor in both single-core and multi-core seems extremely promising."

Apple introduced its first Macs with the Apple Silicon “M1” chip, which brings the ARM architecture to the Mac with improved performance and energy efficiency. While the company said that the M1 chip is more powerful than most PC processors, a new benchmark test revealed that the new MacBook Air with M1 chip can beat all models of the 16-inch MacBook Pro with Intel processors.

Earlier today, an independent analysis from AnandTech argued that the M1 chip in fact has the potential to be the fastest laptop CPU on the market, and the new benchmark results seem to prove this. The new MacBook Air with M1 chip scored 1687 in single-core and 7433 in multi-core tests.

For comparison, the higher-end 16-inch MacBook Pro model with an Intel Core i9 processor scores 1096 single-core and 6870 multi-core. The fact that the M1 chip in a MacBook Air was able to perform better than an Intel Core i9 processor in both single-core and multi-core seems extremely promising.

The benchmark results also revealed that the M1 8-core chip has a base frequency of 3.2GHz, while the 8-core Intel Core i9 processor found in the 16-inch MacBook Pro runs at 2.3GHz with Turbo Boost up to 4.8GHz.

There are also other interesting comparisons that can be made with these results. For instance, the M1 chip delivers performance similar to the 2019 Mac Pro entry-level model — at least based on Geekbench results. Mac Pro scores 1024 in single-core and 7989 in multi-core. The numbers also confirm that the M1 chip is faster than any chip ever made by Apple for iPhone or iPad.

That’s some MacBook Air CPU. If true, that CPU would get you into the top few pages of Geekbench 5 single core results — in a fanless chassis — and it nearly doubles the A14's multicore results https://t.co/uostLE5sQb

— Steve Troughton-Smith (@stroughtonsmith) November 12, 2020

Apple says the M1 chip is the same for all Mac models updated this week, which includes MacBook Air, 13-inch MacBook Pro, and Mac mini. However, both MacBook Pro and Mac mini have an internal fan while MacBook Air doesn’t, which can help these other two models deliver even better-sustained performance.

Now it’s only a matter of time before similar tests are performed with the new M1 MacBook Pro and Mac mini.
