ESPN+ raising its annual subscription price by $5 apiece from January 2021

31st December 2020
"Price has hiked for UFC pay-per-view events too. "

ESPN+ is an over-the-top video streaming subscription service available in the United States, owned by Walt Disney Direct-to-Consumer & International, in partnership with ESPN Inc., which is a joint venture between The Walt Disney Company and the Hearst Communications.

According to Variety, the cost for an annual subscription for ESPN Plus subscribers will increase by $5 apiece from $49.99 to $59.99 in 2021. ESPN raised the monthly price of ESPN Plus earlier this year to $5.99, and now the annual subscription is getting the same treatment.

Starting from January 8, 2021, New subscribers will start paying $59.99 whereas the existing subscribers will have to pay the new price a few months later in March. Disney had already announced that Disney Plus and the company’s bundle of Hulu, Disney Plus, and ESPN Plus would each cost $1 more starting in March 2021, raising those prices to $8.99 and $13.99, respectively.

Hiking price has been a theme of 2020, YouTube TV raised its price, Fubo followed not long after, Netflix raised the cost of its most popular streaming plan by $1, and Hulu’s Live TV service got a price bump as well.

Also, the pricing of ESPN Plus' UFC pay-per-view events will change in January. This is the second time ESPN Plus has raised the price of UFC PPVs, When the service first launched in April 2018, the UFC PPV events cost $59.99. That went up to $64.99 each at the beginning of 2020 and after January 2021, every match will cost $69.99.

UFC pay-per-view matches are exclusive to ESPN Plus in the US, so the price change will affect anyone who keeps up with MMA regularly. Outside the US, the availability of matches varies depending on the region, but the official UFC site has the most up-to-date information.

The price hike is believed to give some insight into ESPN and Disney's confidence in their services. There are new ESPN Plus exclusives coming to the service next year, but ESPN’s biggest get is streaming rights to Southeastern Conference football, which will bring SEC games.

Hulu's Watch Party feature is now available to all subscribers

24th October 2021
"Hulu was first among the big streamers to embrace the co-watch trend during quarantine"

Hulu was first among the major streaming services to roll out a way for multiple people to watch its shows and movies together at the same time during the COVID-19 pandemic. Today, that Watch Party feature is expanding to all subscribers — not just those people paying for the ad-free plan.

Watch Party is available on Hulu’s website. You’ll see the icon on a title’s details page. From there, you can share a Watch Party link with up to seven other Hulu subscribers so that everyone can watch the same content together from afar. Hulu says that “while watching, group members will be able to react in real-time through the chat function and control their own playback.” If you find yourself having to pause while your friends keep watching, there’s a “click to catch up” button to get right back to the same spot as everybody else.

You can use Watch Party with “thousands” of titles from Hulu’s on-demand library, including the company’s new original rom-com film The Happiest Season, which Hulu says broke streaming records when it premiered over Thanksgiving weekend.

A number of third-party co-watch apps rose in popularity during the early quarantine phase of the COVID-19 pandemic. Since then, services like Amazon Prime Video, Disney Plus, Movies Anywhere, and Sling TV have begun offering their own built-in solutions.
