Tips for Taking Care of Your Microwave Oven

12th October 2020
"With few simple steps and precautions, you can make your microwave oven last a little longer with a little more efficiency."

From reheating cooked food to actually cooking food, microwave ovens make chores a little easier in the kitchen. Many people use it almost every day without much caring about the maintenance which is a key factor in the effectiveness and life span of the product. With the greater awareness of the efficiency and usefulness of microwave ovens, the usage of this product has widely increased. So, here are some smart tips for taking care of your microwave oven.

Placement of the microwave

Do not keep your microwave near any water sources like the sink as the water splashes on the oven can cause electric shocks. Be aware not to keep it near the gas oven as it can interfere with the heat dissipation or can heat the sides of the microwave causing risks.

Also, make sure that the electrical socket is in easy reach of the wire. The wire should not be loosely dangling or even be stretched to reach the socket; and when not in use, do not coil the wire on top of the microwave.

Keeping the microwave clean

The cleanliness of the oven is one of the basics. Make sure to wipe the inside of the microwave regularly to keep away the food and liquid spills and splatters. These might cause stains, corrosion, or any unwanted bad odors. The leftover food inside also takes up the energy to heat food next time cutting off the efficiency of the machine.
Depending on the usage, do a full wipe down of your oven once a week or once a month. Some ways to clean can be using a mild detergent or a natural way can be to use vinegar and baking soda. You can also heat a cup of water for 60 – 90 seconds for any stubborn spots.

maintenance-tips

Not to forget the exterior of the oven, make sure to not let dust and greases pile up on the outside of your microwave. The areas around the microwave like the countertop or cabinet also count here. Do not let the liquid get between the touchpad and the machine while cleaning and make sure to check underneath for any fallen food particles.

Using correct dishware

Be careful not to put non-microwaveable containers inside as they can cause leave toxic particles in your food or may even cause fire or explosion. Avoid putting metals, aluminum foils, containers with silver or gold accents inside. Use only dishes specifically labeled as microwave-safe which are usually ceramic, glass, or hard plastic.

Prevent door damage

Make sure that you show utmost care while using the microwave doors as they are the frequently used part of the product. People frequently tend to slam the doors in hurry or open it without turning the oven off. These actions may cause gradual damage to the doors or crack the seals or break any latches. These damages cause food to cook unevenly and the radiations to escape.

Avoid running empty microwave

Serious damages can be caused when there is no food or liquid to absorb microwaves. In such cases, the radiations are absorbed by its own components like the glass or the magnetron that produces the energy. As these components are not designed for the exposure, it is likely to get damaged; and the repair and replacement may not be so cheap.

Do not use for non-food items

It might be tempting to try to use the microwave for drying small clothes or heating other stuff but it should be strictly avoided as the item may cause fire and eventually cause the machine to damage.

Know when to call for help

Microwave ovens are complex appliances and you may not be able to fix any sort of inconvenience. Trying to do so may cause more problems resulting in an expensive repairing charge.

In case of any mechanical or electrical failures, the best way to deal is to call the authorized services for the repair.

Taking good care of your kitchen appliance can increase its lifespan significantly. Now, that you know some tips for taking care of your microwave oven, apply these simple tips and habits to maintain the efficiency of the product and use it for years.

Happy microwaving!!
