How to get rid of Dandruff in winter

Dandruff is one of the main reasons for hair loss. Dandruff occurs when the scalp becomes too oily, and oil production occurs to combat dryness. In the wintertime, people spend more time indoors, owing to the cold weather, hot showers, and crank up the heat which are some reasons for dandruff.

Here is how you can control your dandruff this winter season:

Oil your hair:

Oil your hair before every head bath. Coconut oil is the best form of hydration for the scalp and the hair. You can also mix a few oils using coconut oil as the base—namely, olive oil, neem oil, almond oil, and castor oil in equal measure.

Using oil will help to facilitate blood circulation in your scalp and also provides the moisture that your hair requires in this season.

Oiling makes your hair soft and smooth and prevents your scalp from getting flaky and dry.

Use a mild shampoo:

In the winter, it’s best to avoid hair products that contain alcohol. Alcohol can dry your hair out, and when paired with winter air, your hair will end up being extremely dehydrated, and make it more prone to tangling.

Mild shampoos contain gentler and generally weaker cleansing detergents and surfactants compared to other shampoos.

It contains conditioning agents and often natural oils or botanical extracts to keep hair soft.

Brush your hair:

Brush your hair frequently to keep the blood flowing for a healthy scalp. A well-nourished scalp prevents hair fall and dandruff.

It also helps you get rid of flakiness and itchiness. Brushing will also help clean your hair and scalp by picking up pieces of buildup, skin, or dirt from the hair.

Cut down on sugar:

Too much sugar intake is bad for your hair. A high level of sugar in the blood causes a flaky scalp that leads to dandruff.

Consume honey instead of sugar and cut down on foods that have too much sugar in them. Sugar also depletes the body of vitamin B, which is an essential component of an anti-dandruff diet.

Eat healthily:

A good diet is the key to healthy hair. Eat proper food like eggs, fish, green peas, carrots, green vegetables and drink lots of water.

A balanced diet gives your hair the required nutrition and makes it look healthy and beautiful and it is one way to get rid of dandruff.

Avoid hot showers:

Hot water can strip your hair and scalp of moisture and cause dry hair which is going to create dandruff and itchiness. It will not only make them look dry and frizzy, but it will also lead to making your hair more brittle and prone to breaking.

If the water heater is just too high, it can harm your hair by stripping it of important oils that provide its dryness.

Dandruff Causes and Symptoms

A common disorder that causes the skin on the scalp to flake is dandruff. It's not viral or serious. It can be humiliating, though, and difficult to treat. Mild dandruff with a mild daily shampoo may be managed. A medicated shampoo will help if that does not function. Later on, symptoms can return. It is considered that dandruff is a mild case of seborrheic dermatitis. Seborrheic dermatitis is called cradle cap in infants.

The Symptoms

Signs and symptoms of dandruff might include:

  • On the scalp, hair, eyebrows, mustache or mustache, and shoulders, skin flakes
  • Itchiness of the scalp
  • In children with a cradle cap, the scaly, crusty scalp
  • If you're stressed, the signs and symptoms can be more severe, and they appear to flare in cold, dry seasons.

Dandruff may have several reasons, including:

  • Oily, sore skin
  • Not enough shampooing
  • A Malassezia (yeast-like fungus) that feeds on oils on the scalps of most adults.
  • Dry skin
  • Sensitivity (contact dermatitis) of hair care products
  • Some skin disorders, such as eczema and psoriasis

 

Dry Scalp Causes and Symptoms

What is the main difference between dry scalp and dandruff?

Let's go into the biggest distinctions between the two now that all situations have their figurative cards on the table. The biggest difference between dandruff and a dry scalp is that dandruff is a real medical problem, even if both dryness and dandruff will make your scalp itch, and both can lead to even the faintest flaking. Dandruff is caused by fungal elevation on the surface of the scalp, while a dry scalp is merely a problem of hydration. 

Although both dandruff and a dry scalp seem to come and go, dandruff is unlikely to vanish without treatment, which is a consequence of a fungal infection. Dry scalp, though, can improve with less regular shampooing. Both dry scalp and dandruff are likely, which is why it is tough for most people to know the difference between the two.

Here are the 5 Basic tips for healthy hair. 

1. Trim split ends regularly:

Trimming your hair regularly is as important as cutting down your nails. You should always trim your hair every 4 to 6 weeks because it is important to remove dry and split ends from your hair to make your hair look shiny and healthy. Moreover, Cutting off the dead ends prevents splits from travelling up your hair and breaking off even more length

2. Add Oil:

Oil helps to make your hair soft and manageable. So you really need to add oil to your daily routine.  When your hair is feeling extra-rough, such as after a dip in the pool, use a little argan oil or coconut oil to add softness back into strands. It is not so hard! Just heat up a small amount, and apply it to your hair from mid-shaft to ends.

We really have a bad habit of brushing our hair when it is wet. This actually damages our hair. If you’re brushing wet hair, make sure you’re applying a leave-in product to help the brush glide through without any snagging or breakage.

5. Don't Wash your hair regularly: 

Washing your hair daily or too often can remove the important oils from your scalp too early before they get the chance to work their way down the hair shaft and nourish your entire length. Moreover, it makes your hair dry and frizzy. So, remember, No washing your hair daily!!
