Expiration dates
Many cosmetics do not bear expiry dates and can linger in their unopened packaging for years. Since they are exposed to more bacteria and fungi, cosmetics used by the skin, including mascara, have a shorter shelf period.
- Foundation: Liquid for six months; powder for two years;
- Mascara: Three months with mascara
- Eyeliner and eye shadow: Three months of liquid eyeliner; six months of cream eye shadow; two years of pencil liner and powdered shadow;
- Lipstick and lip liner: Lipstick and gloss, 2 years; lip liner, 2 years or more

You should bear in mind that expiry dates or use-by dates are just things to keep in mind in order to remain safe. If the products are not adequately packed, the consistency of such cosmetics, sunscreens, and acne creams will degrade faster.
Makeup degradation
Makeup degradation is a serious issue as it directly goes to your skin. There are many factors that degrade your makeup like exposing it to heat, moisture, and so on.
Here are some things you should and shouldn't do to keep your makeup safe.
- Try not to use your fingers to apply makeup. Bacteria, mold, and yeast may be added to the bottle by using the fingers to add makeup. The best way to apply makeup is to use sponges, swabs, etc.
- Do not keep your mascara applicators open for a long time. Shut it as soon as possible after use.
- Do not store your makeup products in your car or bathroom or any place with extra humidity or heat. Also do not expose it to direct sunlight. That might alter its texture.
- Change your products timely. It depends on how much you use them, how they are packed, how they are kept and the type of makeup, how long cosmetics can stay safe to use, and successful.
- The cleanest is the make-up that comes with a pump so it can be dispensed into an applicator or onto the hand while still in the tube to cover the leftover substance.
