How to know if you're over watering your indoor plants?

23rd December 2020
"Overwatering a plant is as harmful as under-watering it."

Growing a plant should be done very cautiously. A small mistake can lead to wilting and death of the plant. Everything you provide your plant must be just enough i.e. neither too less nor too much. Too much fertilizer or water can harm the plant. Let's get to know how you can realize if you're overwatering your indoor plants

Root rotting

When you water a plant, the soil should pass that water to the plant’s roots to maintain health. If the soil isn’t in the right state to do this, then that doesn’t happen. For instance, there’s too much water in the soil and it becomes waterlogged. And the roots rot leading to disturbance in the distribution of water in different parts of the plant.

Leaves yellowing

As you overwater your plants, your plants suffer from moisture stress which leads to the yellowing of plants. Normally, most of the leaves of indoor plants are greeny with a slight hint of yellowish-green but never actually yellow. And, if they start to turn yellow, know that you are overwatering your plants.

Leaves browning

Not only do leaves turn brown due to moisture stress, but they may also turn brown because of it. Browning of leaves either is caused because of lack of moisture or because of excessive moisture. Sometimes it's just the tip of the leaves that go brown whilst sometimes it's the entire leaves that go brown.

Wilting

If your plant is all wilted and looks sad and depressed, realize that your plant has been overwatered.

Stunted slow growth

You probably are aware of the growth speed of your indoor plants. But, if you notice some unusual changes in the time of the growth. Or, if the plant grows slower than usual, and has few yellow leaves, then it's probably because of overwatering.

Edema

Edema is a sort of disease for your plant's roots. It is caused by excessive watering of your plants. If your roots get too much water, they cannot pass the water to the leaves nor can they use it in any other meaningful way. The pressure of water in the roots and leaves intensifies leading to an explosion of cells and the death of the plant. So, be careful not to kill your beautiful plant.

Falling of leaves

As mentioned above, the leaves that change colors may start to fall at an alarming rate. Falling of leaves is also the symptom of slow growth and edema as well.

Floppiness

You might see some shoots growing out of your plants and you may get all happy and cheerful about it. But, observe the shoots closely. Healthy shoots grow up into a healthy beautiful plants while some shoots may become all floppy and brown.

Things to prepare while starting roof-top gardening

1st December 2020
"Transform your roof into a beautiful garden."

Owning a beautiful garden is the dream of many; but if you live in city areas, you may feel a lack of proper space. But, let me remind you, to start gardening, you don't need a huge field or ground. You can simply plant some beautiful flowers in a pot and either places them on your balcony, or roof-top, or even hang them in your windows.

If you have a roof or access to a roof, then with proper methods and steps, you can start roof-top gardening pretty easily. You just need the following things to start gardening.

roof-top-gardening

Access

First and foremost, you need to have access to the roof. You must either own one or get permission to start gardening in one. So, if you don't own the house, then get permission from the landlord about the access to the rooftop and then, begin your gardening

Soil

The second most essentials are soil. It's obvious that plant needs soil but the kind of soil and its moisture and fertility matters the most. So, make sure to get yourself fertile soil. As you are planning roof-top gardening, the soil doesn't get many minerals as it gets from the earth. So, make sure to add fertilizers timely to ensure their fertility.

Pots and containers

Before purchasing pots and containers, ensure what kinds of plants you are planning to grow and in what way. This will help you evaluate the length and width of the pots. Terra cotta is used by many experts but they tend to dry faster. Thereupon, if possible, try to get yourself a customized pot or container.

Drainage

Your plant needs to drain out some water but some containers do not have holes to drain the water. So, make sure to leave an opening at the bottom of your pot to ensure proper water drainage.

Ensure a water source

Your plants require persistent attention and care unless they're low maintenance plants. So, it is to ensure a water source. It's best if you can set an automatic water source which will feed your plants even when you get too busy with work.

Plants

Now, the most essential and core part of gardening- plants. After preparing other essentials, you need to select the type of plant you want to grow and nourish in your roof-top garden. You can either grow vegetables. Or you can also go with perennial plants- they require deep pots for their roots to grow but will make your rooftop greeny and beautiful. Also, if you want a flower garden, then you can easily choose the flowers you like and grow a beautiful little roof-top garden for yourself.

Tips for choosing pot for your houseplants

15th December 2020
"Choose the pot that suits your style and gives positive vibes."

Houseplants are the best and liveliest option for decorating your house. There are plenty of options for pots from clay pots to ceramics and plastic pots, you can choose the one you like and prefer. With cute and beautiful houseplants with beautiful pots, you can bring positive vibrance to your house. Let's look at some tips for choosing pots for your houseplants.

Size

The size of the pot depends upon the size or type of plant you are planning to plant. If you are planning for smaller plants that barely grow like cactus, you can go with smaller sized pots. And if you are planning to get a ZZ plant or pothos, then make sure to buy a bigger one and change the pot to a bigger size in bigger diameter as the plant keeps on growing.

However, excessively big pots can look unproportioned and can cause several health problems to the plant as the soil will dry out easily.

Drainage

The plant needs a proper drainage hole to release excess water. Having a drainage hole will help you ensure that the soil won't stay wet for a longer period of time. The excess water can freely release from the drainage holes letting your plant roots get the oxygen. Moreover, if you use a saucer or pan beneath the pot, then ensure to empty it to prevent the roots from soaking in too much moisture.

Type of pot

There are basically 3 different types of pot i.e. ceramics pot, plastic pot, and clay pot. Currently, the ceramic pot is quite an on-trend because of its availability in different shapes, styles, and colors. Clay pots are quite heavy and cheap and are best for heavy plants. And, the most convenient one is a plastic pot, which is easily available at a reasonable price in different shapes, designs, and colors. You can choose the type of pot you want as per the feel and look you desire.

Designs

As for the design, go after your preference. You may choose the plain pots with little to no design, or some minimalistic designs, or some detailed designs as well. You can also customize your own pots.

Keep it clean

Dirty and unhygienic pots may cause different problems to the plant. The plant leaves may dry out, or different black spots may form, or the plant may suffer from other various kinds of problems if the pot is not clean. Moreover, if you plan on reusing the pots, then clean the pot inside out. Normally, it is difficult to clean a clay pot,  but with the help of a bristle brush or steel-wood pad, you can clean off the white marks easily.
