Panasonic launches transparent 55-inch OLED displays

24th October 2021
"The modular displays which are suitable for digital signage will be available in Japan and Asia initially, using technology from LG already seen in subway trains in Beijing and Shenzhen in China."

Panasonic has announced the commercial release of a 55-inch transparent OLED display module, with plans to release it globally, starting with the Japanese and Asia-Oceania markets at the start of December. The transparent OLED panels will be provided by LG, which announced the deal this week.

The new Panasonic product uses a self-illuminating transparent OLED display panel that does not require a backlight. Measuring less than 1 cm in thickness at the display section, the ultra-thin display panel offers high transparency and renders high-quality pictures with vivid colors.

A dimming unit originally developed by Panasonic adjusts the amount of light passing through the panel to maintain high contrast and clearly display images even in an environment brightly lit by outside lights. The product is provided in a modular specification for installation in homes and commercial environments including transit advertisements and public facilities. Multiple panels can be joined together to display images on a larger screen.

Panasonic has showcased prototype transparent displays at trade shows and exhibitions around the world since 2016, including IFA in Germany, CES in the US, Milano Salone in Italy, the China International Import Expo, and CEATEC in Japan.

In its announcement, LG said the transparent OLED panels to be used in Panasonic’s 55-inch OLED display modules, can in turn be used for digital signage products, according to South Korea’s Yonhap news agency.

In August, LG Display said that it has provided the world’s first transparent OLED displays for subway train windows in Beijing and the southern Chinese tech hub of Shenzhen.

LG Display said transparent OLEDs are gaining interest from transportation customers in the areas of self-driving cars, airplanes and subways and also from sectors such as the smart home and smart building industries.

The transparent display market is expected to grow at an average rate of 46% annually and reach US$4.93 billion by 2024, LG Display said, citing global consulting firm Prescient & Strategic Intelligence.

Samsung Electronics unveils expanded MicroLED, QLED 8K and Lifestyle TV Lineups

18th April 2022
"New TVs target both home cinema and connected lifestyle needs with upgraded picture quality, sound, and smart features"

Samsung Electronics unveiled its latest lineup of MicroLED, QLED 8K and Lifestyle TVs. With the introduction of new display sizes, 8K AI upscaling capabilities, innovative display orientation technology, and more, Samsung showcased how its 2020 lineups redefine immersion and revolutionize home integration.

“Consumers use screens every day to work from home, exercise from home, and even shop from home. As our lifestyles continue to evolve, the TV screen is evolving with them to provide consumers access to their favourite content and real-time information whenever and wherever they want it,” said Jong-hee Han, President of Visual Displays at Samsung Electronics. “As part of our vision of ‘Screens Everywhere,’ we’re thrilled to deliver a more vivid and connected at-home viewing experience by incorporating AI-enabled features and 8K resolution technology into our displays.”

Samsung MicroLED Pioneering the Home Entertainment Market

Samsung introduced the home-ready, modular MicroLED tv, which combines next-generation screen technology with unprecedented customization capabilities. Consumers are now able to personally experience how Samsung’s design and innovation engineering teams have reimagined the TV.

With 75 -,88-, 93- and 110-inch display sizes, MicroLED models are suited for a variety of homes and lifestyles. The new 88- and 150-inch MicroLED models introduce ultra-slim infinity designs, virtually removing all four sides of the bezels for a finish that blends right into any wall. And consumers can also connect multiple MicroLED panels together to create new combinations and adapt their TV for their specific space.

MicroLED TV displays offer best-in-class picture quality. They deliver greater depth, better resolution, and higher clarity as well as a peak brightness of 5,000 nits. They also leverage upscaling abilities based on deep learning to deliver the highest-quality content, regardless of the source. The result is that these MicroLED TV displays provide an unparalleled sense of immersion for the at-home viewing experience.

8K QLED Lineup Expands With Strengthened AI Quantum Processor 8K and Design

Samsung’s flagship Q950TS QLED 8K TV is the industry’s first 8K TV to combine a striking, ultra-thin form factor, premium 8K picture quality, and impressive surround-sound audio. Plus, the Q950TS introduces the ‘Infinity Screen,’ which produces a screen-to-body ratio of 99 percent to create an unprecedented viewing experience.

With a stunning 8K resolution, the Q950TS delivers the best LCD picture quality on the market. Equipped with the AI Quantum Processor 8K, it has built-in 8K AI upscaling and deep-learning capabilities that can automatically upscale non-8K content to pristine and true-to-life 8K resolution. With a feature called Adaptive Picture, it can also optimize the screen to both ambient conditions and individual images. And the AI Quantum Processor – the powerhouse behind the flagship display – is also helping to power Samsung’s open smart home platform, Tizen, enabling users to experience everything from enhanced picture quality to heightened usability to other connected home functions.

Further supporting the picture quality and design enhancements of the QLED 8K lineup, the 8K ecosystem continues to expand to provide seamless playback for 8K content from providers like YouTube. The adoption of AV1 codec allows for better compression rates and enables the support of HDR10+ technology, image dimensionality, brightness optimization, and contrast ratio.

And building off of the picture quality amplification are the QLED 8K’s premium sound features – Q-Symphony, Object Tracking Sound+ (OTS+), and Active Voice Amplifier. These features maximize immersive sound by delivering dimensional and dynamic audio that corresponds with large-screen viewing experiences. And when paired with the CTA “Best of Innovation”-winning HQ-Q800T soundbar, the TV’s speakers sync with the soundbar to serve as an additional audio channel and create a more dynamic soundscape.

YouTube Music got more easier to stream on Televisions

12th October 2020
"Browse with less frustration"

On Monday, YouTube announced a number of updates for its YouTube Music TV app, including TVs running Android TV OS and the new Chromecast with Google TV. For all smart TVs, YouTube Music users can now access saved playlists and liked songs in their available libraries, the company said in a blog post. The options will appear in the YouTube Music tab within the YouTube TV app. The update also includes new visuals to show albums and playlist artwork.

We’re working hard to bring even more features to YouTube Music,” the blog post reads. “In the coming months, YouTube Music Premium users will be able to continue playing music in the background after exiting the app.”

The main change is that Android TV OS users will be able to access music uploads directly in your library. There’s also a new playback interface that’s designed to include relevant information like the artist’s name, as well as display a progress bar while a song plays. For devices with the Android TV home screen, people will also be able to use a new YouTube Music row to make browsing easier, according to the blog.
YouTube Music launched in 2018, with The reviewer calling it “surprisingly great.” As YouTube expands the service, the app — on TV, mobile, and desktop — have seen a number of updates. Recently, YouTube made it so people without premium accounts could cast to their speakers and allowed Google Music users to transfer their tunes over to YouTube Music.

Expect more changes to YouTube Music on TV sets as YouTube Music will soon replace Google Music.
