Google Assistant can schedule your smart lights

16th October 2021
"Use the smart assistant’s ‘scheduled action’ feature, but be aware there are a few quirks"

Google Assistant now lets users schedule lights and other devices to turn on and off at specific times with its “scheduled actions” feature, according to Android Police, which cites Google Assistant developer documentation.

Google Assistant has worked with Hue and other smart lights for some time, to turn them on and off and to set alarms, but now you can tell your Assistant exactly when you want to turn on lights and other devices in a smart home.

One caveat: you have to be really specific if you want to schedule the lights (or other devices) to turn on or off a day in the future. Just saying something like, “Hey Google, turn the lights on tomorrow at 8 PM,” isn’t enough. You’d need to say, “Hey Google, turn on the lights Tuesday at 8 PM.”

However, as Android Police noted, you can specify “sunrise” and “sunset” as times to set your lights to come on (or off) and you won’t need to state the exact time. You also can use Google Assistant to schedule a length of time to keep lights on, such as “turn on lights for 10 minutes.”
The feature is apparently still a work in progress, however; in addition to the “tomorrow” quirk, Reddit users and Android Police note that the function to cancel a scheduled action doesn’t appear to work. But according to Google Assistant smart home documentation, it looks like these features are likely to be working soon.

Samsung smart TV will soon double as a Google Assistant microphone

15th October 2020
"Lenovo’s Smart Clock Essential which also has Assistant is now available"

Google Assistant is now available on newer Samsung smart TVs in the US, the companies announced. The AI helper will be available on Samsung 2020 smart TV models, including the 2020 8K and 4K QLED models, the 2020 Crystal UHD TVs, 2020 Frame, and Serif sets, and 2020 Sero and Terrace models. The update will be available in the US first and roll out to more countries soon, according to Google.

Pressing down on the TV’s remote control mic will activate Assistant, and users will be able to switch channels, open apps, and adjust the TV’s volume with voice commands. The TVs already had voice command settings available that could be controlled with the mic on the remote, but you’ll have to tell it you want to use Google Assistant rather than Samsung’s default Bixby assistant. And you can control other smart home devices you have connected to Google Assistant, too. After installing an OTA update, users can enable Assistant on their Samsung TV by going to Settings > General > Voice > Voice assistant.

There were hints that Samsung was considering more uses for Google Assistant, with reports over the summer that the companies were negotiating to feature Assistant more prominently on Samsung devices. It’s not totally clear what this means for Bixby, which Samsung introduced in 2017, but the company reportedly has started phasing out some Bixby augmented reality features.
Google also announced that the Assistant-enabled Lenovo Smart Clock Essential is now available, which we reviewed in August. The clock, which goes for $49.99 — a good bit cheaper than other voice-assisted clocks — can stream playlists and podcasts, add items to shopping lists, make calls, and control other compatible smart devices.

Google Assistant Driving Mode appears to be coming to Android at last

18th October 2020
"The feature was first announced at Google I/O 2019"

The Google Assistant Driving mode that the company first announced in 2019 has started appearing on some Android devices, XDA-Developers reported. The UI looks somewhat different from what Google showed at its I/O developers conference last year. XDA says it first noticed something was coming about two weeks ago when users reported seeing a new navigation interface in Google Maps.

It’s not clear whether the rollout of this new mode is part of a test or will be coming for all users. Mishaal Rahman at XDA said he saw the new driving mode on a Google Pixel 4, an Asus ZenFone 7 Pro, and an LG Velvet, and he surmises that the new mode will replace the Android Auto app on smartphones. That seems consistent with what Google told last year.

Whether the new mode will include all the features Google described when it first unveiled the driving mode also isn’t yet clear. It was meant to be available on any Android phone with Assistant, using a “Hey Google, let’s drive” voice prompt that would bring up a dashboard with driving-relevant activities and other personalized recommendations. And it would provide infotainment features to drivers whose vehicles aren’t equipped with touchscreen displays.

The voice prompt doesn’t appear to work yet even on devices enabled with the new mode, according to Android Police. To see if your device has Assistant Driving Mode, open Google Maps and from the navigation settings menu, and select “Google Assistant settings.” If it’s not enabled, you’ll be taken to the main Assistant settings section.

A Google spokesperson says “We’re constantly experimenting with ways to make Assistant more helpful.

Google roll out new settings for smart features to personalize and save data on Gmail

18th November 2020
"Smart features in Gmail include Smart Compose and Smart Reply."

Google recently rolled out an automatic delete feature for new users, the feature deletes user data every eighteen months unless users change the settings as per their preference. This data will include the user's location history, web, and app activity. Now, Google is rolling out new controls for smart features that will give the ability to users to turn them off. Smart features in Gmail include automatic email filtering, tabbed inbox, summary cards above emails, Smart Compose, and Smart Reply that essentially give suggestions to users before they type out the entire message.

All these features are aimed at the convenience of users but they use significant amounts of data. Google will roll out a toggle that users can turn off if they do not rely on the features. They can also turn it back on anytime.
With Google capping storage data for Google Photos at 15GB from June 21, 2021, users will want to opt to turn off smart features and the toggle will make it easier. Google will roll out the feature soon and when it does it will notify the users. Google noted that the ability to turn off the smart features is not new and users can separately turn off the smart feature control for Gmail, Google Meet, and Chat.

"The ability to turn on (or not) some of these individual smart features is not new. What’s new is a clearer choice over the data processing that makes them possible. This new setting is designed to reduce the work of understanding and managing that process, in view of what we’ve learned from user experience research and regulators’ emphasis on comprehensible, actionable user choices over data," Google in a blog post said.
Turning off the toggle will also limit the user’s access to personalized data on Gmail, Chat, and Meet. If a user personalizes this data, they get reminders from Google Assistant for bills, the option to view restaurant reservations in Maps, and loyalty cards & tickets for Google Pay.

Earlier this week Google announced that starting June 21, 2021, Google will no longer offer unlimited free photo backup June 2021. However, any high-quality picture or video that will be uploaded before June 21, 2021, will not be counted towards your 15GB of free storage. The photos that are backed up before June 21 will be considered free and will be exempted from the storage limit.
