Huawei, reeling from U.S. sanctions, plans foray into EVs

26th February 2021
"The world's largest telecommunications equipment maker, battered by U.S. sanctions, explores a strategic shift."

China's Huawei plans to make electric vehicles under its own brand and could launch some models this year, four sources said, as the world's largest telecommunications equipment maker, battered by U.S. sanctions, explores a strategic shift.

Huawei Technologies Co Ltd is in talks with state-owned Changan Automobile and other automakers to use their car plants to make its electric vehicles (EVs), according to two of the people familiar with the matter.

Huawei is also in discussions with Beijing-backed BAIC Group's BluePark New Energy Technology to manufacture its EVs, said one of the two and a separate person with direct knowledge of the matter.

The plan heralds a potentially major shift in direction for Huawei after nearly two-years of U.S. sanctions that have cut its access to key supply chains, forcing it to sell a part of its smartphone business to keep the brand alive.

Huawei was placed on a trade blacklist by the Trump administration over national security concerns. Many industry executives see little chance that blocks on the sale of billions of dollars of U.S. technology and chips to the Chinese company, which has denied wrongdoing, will be reversed by his successor.

A Huawei spokesman denied the company plans to design EVs or produce Huawei branded vehicles.

"Huawei is not a car manufacturer. However, through ICT (information and communications technology), we aim to be a digital car-oriented and new-added components provider, enabling car OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) to build better vehicles."

Huawei has started internally designing the EVs and approaching suppliers at home, with the aim of officially launching the project as early as this year, three of the sources said.

GROWING EV MARKET

Sales of new energy vehicles (NEVs), including pure battery electric vehicles as well as plug-in hybrid and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, are expected to make up 20% of China's overall annual auto sales by 2025.

In the United States, Amazon.com Inc and Alphabet Inc are also developing auto-related technology or investing in smart-car startups.

Huawei has been developing a swathe of technologies for EVs for years including in-car software systems, sensors for automobiles, and 5G communications hardware.

The company has also formed partnerships with automakers such as Daimler AG, General Motors Co, and SAIC Motor to jointly develop smart auto technologies.

Huawei Partners with 18 car companies to setup 5G car ecosystem

11th May 2020
"5G vehicles have become a strategic commanding height and a hotspot for innovation in the development of the automotive industry."

Chinese tech giant Huawei has established an alliance with a handful of automakers and ride-hailing service providers to build a 5G-enabled automobile ecosystem in a move to accelerate the uptake of 5G technology in smart cars, according to a company statement.

The move is yet another sign of Huawei’s determination to get into the self-driving car business at the same time as Washington has tried to isolate the company by limiting the use of its equipment in 5G networks due to security concerns and encouraging other countries to follow suit.

As part of the 5G-enabled automobile ecosystem, Huawei will provide members, including (FAW Group, Changan Automobile, Dongfeng Group, SAIC Group, Guangzhou Automobile Group, BAIC Group, BYD, Great Wall Motors, Chery Holdings, JAC, Yutong (passenger cars), Cyrus, Nanjing Iveco, T3 travel  (A batch of 18 car companies) carmakers, with “technologies which they can use to test their 5G-enabled vehicles,” the statement said.

With advantages in transmission speed, reliability and latency, 5G technology is considered essential for enhancing connected vehicles’ self-driving and entertainment capabilities.

In 2019, Huawei launched its first 5G communications hardware, named the MH5000 module, which the company claimed would make intelligent car transportation a reality and aid its plans to commercialize 5G network technology for the automotive sector.

Since the release of the world's first 5G vehicle module MH5000 in April 2019, Huawei has provided 5G vehicle modules MH5000, 5G vehicle terminal T-Box platform and other products and technologies to ecosystem partners and many car companies to support 5G vehicles and 5G + C-V2X intelligent network application innovation.

Over the past year, based on Huawei's 5G in-vehicle communication products and solutions, many international and domestic auto companies have launched various innovations in autonomous driving, intelligent networking, and information services, so that consumers gradually perceive the value of 5G technology in automobiles.

Huawei is also building an open intelligent-driving platform to study app interface, car controlling systems, smart cockpits and the internet of vehicles.

'Apple Car' could generate $50B in revenue by 2030

26th February 2021
"Apple Car could become a solid hardware revenue source for Apple, possibly generating $50 billion by 2030"

The "Apple Car" may not disrupt the market when it first debuts, but Piper Sandler says it could become a solid hardware revenue source for Apple, possibly generating $50 billion by 2030.

Apple Car

In a note to investors, lead analyst Harsh Kumar laid out Piper Sandler's framework for a potential "Apple Car" release.

"Overall, we think Apple entering the automotive market makes perfect sense. Similar to its other hardware offerings, the company can enter the market at a time of peak technology disruption while avoiding the risk of forming the market," Kumar wrote.

It's possible that Apple could opt to make its automotive debut smaller in scale with an upgraded CarPlay system or an Apple-branded vehicle user interface for use in other manufacturer cars. However, Kumar says he expects Apple will run with a "full-blown Apple-branded electric vehicle."

That's because Apple could control every aspect of the design, including the electric vehicle hardware and the baked-in software platform.

Citing recent reports, Kumar points out that Apple may be targeting a run of 100,000 vehicles in 2024. Based on that, he says Apple could generate about $5 billion in revenue with just less than 0.1% of the market. If it reached 1% market penetration by 2030, that could grow to $50 billion.

Apple Car

The analyst believes now is the right time for Apple to enter the car market. That's large because it's "primed for technological innovation," and the fact that Apple could use the additional revenue to drive growth as products like the iPhone and Mac reach maturity.

Even if it does opt for an Apple-branded car, Kumar believes the company will tap a third-party manufacturer to actually produce it. Apple, he notes, doesn't assemble its own hardware products. However, Kumar says that Apple's development in-vehicle tech has been in the works for years. As such, he believes the car could feature strong technology compared to rivals.

The biggest hurdle is Apple finding a manufacturing partner since Kumar notes that carmakers don't want to be "the Foxconn of the auto industry."
