Safety measures to consider while using a room heater

7th November 2020
"Do not forget to turn the room heater off before sleeping!"

Room heaters are inevitable to survive through chilly winters. They warm up our space and help us focus on our work easing us from the inconvenience of cold. They can be of many types- infrared, convection, fan heaters, and many more. You can also get yourself a portable heater if you like to have warmth around you wherever you move. Basically, room heaters have eased our lives and helped us survive the icy cold winters.

Room heaters can be as harmful as they are convenient if used improperly. You may have heard about several accidents and deaths caused by improper use of heaters. On one hand, if used with proper precautions, heaters help you to survive the cold. And, on other hand, if used improperly, you will be shocked if you hear the damages done by a simple heater. Many lives have been taken by the Carbon Monoxide fumes, an odorless, invisible yet poisonous gas, generated by the room heaters. So, make sure to use them with proper precautions.

Here are a few safety measures to consider while using a room heater.

Keep it in an open space far from inflammable objects

It is best if you place your heater on a flat open floor. As it is burning hot, especially the infrared heaters come with a hot heating element that is hot enough to burn papers if they contact. So, to avoid any kind of fire accidents, it is best to place the heater in an open space at least 2-3 feet away from furniture, papers, blankets, etc.

Look out for the broken cord

Before using the heater, take a few seconds out to inspect the heater to check if it has any broken cord. Broken cords or bars may lead to higher health problems if avoided. Moreover, do not let any dust get piled up in the heating element as well. If the health of the heater gets bad, do not avoid it and either has it repaired by a professional or replace it with a new one.

Place the heater away from the reach of children and pets

Do not experiment

Often times, there have been accidents when people tried to dry clothes with the help of a room heater. The room heater was made to keep you and your room warm and nothing else. Do not run experiments with your heater, unless you want to burn your house down.

Avoid overloading power

The heater consumes a lot of power; so, make sure that it is not plugged with any other electrical appliances. It may cause overloading of power which leads to shortcircuit as well.

Turn it off before sleeping

You may have heard people dying in their sleep because of the carbon monoxide that accumulates in the room. If you do not want to suffocate yourself to death, do not forget to turn the heater off before sleeping or leaving the room.

Do not place it in humid places

It is pretty tempting to place a heater in your bathroom during showers in the winter. But, this temptation might cause significant hazards. Do not place a heater in humid places and avoid liquids at any cost. Also, avoid touching the heater with wet hands to avoid electrical damages.
