Do you know during eight hours of sleep our bodies go through three distinct stages that contribute to the overall well-being of our body including skin?

Skin is the largest organ of the human body so sleep is vital for healthy skin. In this article we will be talking about the effects of lack of sleep on your skin:

Dry Skin

Lack of sleep causes skin irritation and skin dryness! It’s the body’s way of rebalancing hydration levels by producing extra perspiration on the skin while we’re sleeping.

Dry skin

Remember, sleep is a natural moisturizer that helps smooth out wrinkles. Moreover, lack of sleep lowers your PH levels, which causes dry skin.

Dark Circles under the Eyes

Our blood vessels dilate from lack of sleep which causes dark circles and puffiness below the eyes. Also, in some cases, dark circles are caused by an iron deficiency, typically a sign that not enough oxygen is flowing in the bloodstream to the body tissues. This is often due to sleeplessness.

Puffy eyes

Moreover, when we sleep, the blood flow increases throughout our bodies, aiding skin rejuvenation.

Aging

Not enough sleep means more stress!  When you don’t get enough sleep, stress begins to increase in your body. Chronic stress damages collagen in your skin. Collagen is a vital protein made of amino acids.

Aging

It gives structure and elasticity to the skin. As collagen breaks down, your skin is no longer as firm and smooth which results in aging at a very young age.

Dull Skin

If you are tired from lack of sleep, it causes your blood circulation to work less efficiently.

Dull skin

Moreover, the result is lower oxygen in the blood, and that can make your skin appear dull, pigmented, and grayish. Remember, inadequate sleep raises your cortisol levels which triggers inflammation that breaks down the proteins that keep your skin smooth and glowing resulting in dull skin.

Tips for reducing the eye puffiness

3rd February 2021
"Get rid of eye puffiness with these tips and tricks."

Most of the women, be it working women or housewives, have puffiness, fine lines, and wrinkles around and under their eyes. It may be caused by stress, overworking, or any other millennia problem. Well, whatever the reason may be, here’re some tips for reducing eye puffiness

Apply a cold compress

Be it puffiness or dark circles, applying a cold compress can do wonders for you. It can also help to reduce the swelling. Simply, grab a clean washcloth and wet it with cool water and apply it around and under your eyes for a few minutes with gentle pressure.

Put on cucumber slices or tea bags

Cucumber slices can also help soothe puffy eyes and reduce swelling, but you have to have a refrigerated cucumber on hand.  Keep the slices on your eyelids until they’re no longer cool.

As for the tea bags, the caffeine in the tea bags can penetrate the skin, ease puffiness, and increase circulation.  To try this method, wet two tea bags, refrigerate for 20 minutes, and place them on your eyes for 15 to 30 minutes.

Gently tap or massage to stimulate blood flow

You can work to increase blood flow under your eyes by gently tapping or massaging around the eyes. It’s best to work in a downward motion, away from your face.

Use an eye-roller

If you apply the eye cooling gels using a metal roller ball, it can also soothe and help with the inflammation. Put the product as much as you like on the eye pencil and sweep it back and forth on the affected area to massage in.

Apply a chilled face cream or serum

Cooling down the eye area can help reduce puffiness by constricting blood vessels. Try chilling your favorite face cream or other products, like eye cream, before applying.

Put on moisturizer regularly

Once you’ve finished cleansing your skin, apply a moisturizer straight away. Doing so will help further lock in moisture. You’ll want to look for a kind that’s meant for normal-to-dry skin and doesn’t have any acne-fighting ingredients, like salicylic acid.

Basic skincare routine for dry skin in winter

24th November 2021
"People with dry skin always struggle to maintain skin hydration levels properly throughout the day."

People with dry skin always struggle to maintain skin hydration levels properly throughout the day. To prevent your skin from feeling dry, flaky, and uncomfortable by the end of the day, you need a skincare routine that helps it hold onto moisture.

Here’s a skincare routine for dry skin in winter that can leave your skin happy, hydrated, and glowing.

Cleanse:

Cleansing the skin is the first step before applying any moisturizing creams or oils. Remove all makeup, dirt, and environmental pollutants from the day and start fresh.

Choose a clean face wash product that has hydrating ingredients to soothe the skin. Cleansing your face too often strips away all the moisture from your skin.

Wash your face just twice a day with a cleanser.

Toner:

Toner complements your cleanser as a secondary product to get rid of any leftover makeup or dirt you may have missed.

It helps to remove excess oil, bring balance to the skin tone, and allow other skincare products to absorb fully into the skin.

Hydrate:

Serums contain a high concentration of active ingredients that replenish your skin and keep it healthy.

If you have dry skin, you may try serums with hyaluronic acid and vitamin E. They will refresh your skin and keep it soft.

Moisturize:

Moisturizer adds moisture back to the skin, hydrating it and leaving you with a fresher appearance.

This is the most crucial step in caring for dry skin. Always apply moisturizer after washing your face and on damp skin.

This helps your skin stay hydrated throughout the day. Pick a hydrating moisturizer that does not contain any irritants.

Sunscreen:

Sunscreen has become a must-have part of any skincare routine and not just a go-to when headed to the beach or pool.

Damage from UV rays can quickly dry out the skin and leave it tight and flaky. Once you have moisturized your skin, it is time to layer it with sun protection.

Try to avoid sun exposure and seek shade as much as possible. Also, try to cover up properly and wear sunglasses.

Overnight Care:

Taking off your makeup is essential before you start your nighttime routine. You may use an oil-based cleanser or cleansing oil to remove your makeup.

Use a gentle water-based cleanser to wash your face and remove all traces of dirt. Give your skin an extra boost of hydration by using a night cream.

The overnight cream easily absorbs into the skin to hydrate and nourish the skin while you’re sleeping.

How to get rid of dark circles and puffy eyes

29th November 2021
"Whether the cause is a few long days or too many restless nights, dark circles and puffy eyes can leave you looking and feeling like you’re in a slump"

Whether the cause is a few long days or too many restless nights, dark circles and puffy eyes can leave you looking and feeling like you’re in a slump. Splashing cold water on your face or grabbing concealer is not the answer.

There are many more effective ways to unpack those under-eye bags and prevent eye puffiness.

Get enough sleep:

Catching up on sleep can also help reduce the appearance of dark circles. Sleep deprivation can cause your skin to appear pale, making the dark circles more obvious.

Allow yourself seven to eight hours of rest to prevent dark circles from appearing. Sleep not only helps keep eyes bright. It also aids your body in repairing cell damage to your skin.

Avoid alcohol and caffeine:

Though they may perk you up in the short term, caffeine and alcohol don't do the same for your skin. They can cause mild dehydration, making dark circles more obvious.

Reduce the look of under-eye bags by reducing the amount of alcohol and caffeine you consume. You can drink water instead which can help to smooth the skin beneath your eyes.

Go DIY and Try Using Tea Bags:

If you need a quick fix for reducing puffiness and darkness, grab a couple of bags of tea that contains caffeine.

Brew them for a few minutes in hot water, let them cool until they feel lukewarm, and put them on your closed eyes for three to four minutes.

The caffeine will help constrict the blood vessels beneath the skin around your eyes.

Apply Brightening Creams:

Products made with hydroquinone, especially when combined with retinoid, hyaluronic acid, or vitamin C, have been useful for some people in lightening dark circles.

Retinoids can affect both cellular and molecular properties of the skin, and make your skin look younger.

Apply a cold compress:

A cold compress can help reduce swelling and shrink dilated blood vessels. This can reduce the appearance of puffiness and help eliminate dark circles.

Wrap a few ice cubes in a clean washcloth and apply to your eyes. You can also dampen a washcloth with cold water and apply it to the skin under your eyes for 20 minutes for the same effect.
