Safety measures while using a microwave oven

19th November 2020
"Keep yourself and your house safe from burning down!!"

Microwave ovens are the go-to appliance if you are either far from home, or a busy person, or interested in baking. They have eased the lives of several people as they are pretty convenient and simple to use. As it uses hot radiation to cook food and can turn really dangerous if not used properly, you should take the necessary safety steps into consideration while using it. Make sure to stay alert when you use a microwave oven and keep yourself away from harm's way.

Follow manual's instructions

It's best to follow the instructions and guidance of the manual that comes with the oven. Do not try to outsmart the equipment and go through every line of the manual so that you won't mess up the microwave oven and the dishes you plan to cook.

Use only Oven-friendly Products

It's best to use only the oven-friendly dishwares while cooking or using a microwave oven. Most of all avoid the use of metallic, and plastic dishware as metals are prone to burn and plastics melt. Unless you want to burn your hands or spend hours cleaning the mess, only use the oven-friendly products.

Avoid Flammable food or liquids

Flammable foods and liquids burn once you turn the microwave oven on. Unless you want to burn your whole house down, do not try to cook any kind of flammable food and liquids like alcohol.

Check for leakage

Check if the microwave radiation leaks through the loose door hinges, latch, or seals. Even though the microwave radiation doesn't pose any harm to your health, check out for broken doors or damages to ensure no microwave radiation is leaked. As microwave radiation cannot be seen and is odorless, you never know when the radiation leaks; so check the oven door and hinges timely.

Avoid sealed foods

Sealed food packages tend to explode if higher pressure is exerted upon them. So, if you want to heat the sealed food, open the seal, put it in an oven-friendly container or dishware, and then microwave it.

Keep away from children's and pet's reach

Do not cover the oven vent

Do not place anything over the microwave oven and never cover the oven vent when it is in use. It's best to leave the oven on its own- uncovered and not-disturbed. Covering it up increases the pressure and temperature of the microwave oven which may also cause a fire.

Do not run experiments

Do not try to run experiments with the microwave oven. Do not turn the microwave oven on without closing its door. It leads to exposure to microwave energy.
