Nokia 8800, Nokia 6300 phones from the 00s might return with 4G support

4th November 2020
"HMD Global might be working on the 4G, Wi-Fi calling supported models of the Nokia 8800 and Nokia 6300."

Nokia has not shied away from capitalizing on the nostalgia factor by resurrecting older models that were quite popular back during their heydays. Joining that revamped set of phones will soon be the Nokia 8000 and Nokia 6300. The 4G models of these two phones from the noughties have been spotted online, which could mean that HMD Global will bring the improved versions of the popular Nokia 8800 and Nokia 6300.

Telia, a Swedish telecom operator, recently refreshed the list of devices that will support Wi-Fi calling. While the list has mentioned some of the latest smartphones from Samsung and OnePlus, two phones have showed up on the list out of the blue. This list was first spotted by a German tech website called Winfuture. The mention of the two old Nokia phones in the list means they might soon return with 4G capabilities and Wi-Fi calling. While the Nokia 6300 is a straight-up revamp to the old model, the Nokia 8000 is another addition to the Nokia 8000 series.

While an alternate scenario could be that the telco listed these names by mistake, there is a fat chance that would have happened. So, the only option to stick with right now, considering HMD Global’s track record, is to believe that the two popular phones from the noughties are coming back with enhancements. The Nokia 6300 4G and Nokia 8000 4G, as they have been listed, will join the Nokia 8110 4G, Nokia 3310 4G, and others.

Some leaked images in August showed a Nokia device that looked uncannily similar to the Nokia 6300. If both devices are the same, we might have already had our first look at the upcoming Nokia phone. Also, in which case, the Nokia phone may have passed the FCC certification with the codename Leo.

The specifications of these two Nokia phones are not clear at the moment. But they might ship with KaiOS, much like the other phones that were brought back to life by HMD Global recently. The older models of these two phones used to run S40 OS. But apart from the software, the company is likely to keep the skeleton of these phones intact on the newer models.

This means we could see the Nokia 6300 4G sporting that 2MP camera on the back, a T9 keyboard, and a retro design that Nokia phones were known for. The Nokia 8000 4G could look like the Nokia 8800 luxury device with a metal body with a sliding display module, which when extended opens the T9 keyboard embedded underneath. HMD Global has not said anything on these phones yet. This is why readers are advised to take this piece of information with a pinch of salt.

Nokia has declared more than 3,000 patent families as essential for 5G, less than six months

23rd March 2020
"Nokia today announced that it has declared more than 3,000 patent families to the ETSI as essential for the 5G standard, reflecting its continuing leadership and strong momentum in cellular technology R&D and standardization. "

Nokia today announced that it has declared more than 3,000 patent families to the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) as essential for the 5G standard, reflecting its continuing leadership and strong momentum in cellular technology R&D and standardization.

Driven by world-class inventions from the renowned Nokia Bell Labs, which has invented many of the foundational 5G technologies that are commercial today, Nokia has played a leading role in pioneering key technologies for 5G, working with the 3GPP organization to establish 5G standards and enabling the rollout of 5G networks. 3GPP is a partnership of seven standards development organizations including ETSI. Nokia had a key role in driving the first set of globally interoperable 5G standards to completion and is now contributing towards the next set of standards. Through its research innovation and standardization leadership, Nokia enabled the ecosystem development for 5G technologies, paving the way for consumers and industries to have access to 5G faster and smoothly.

Marcus Weldon, Nokia Chief Technology Officer and President of Nokia Bell Labs said: “Nokia has defined many of the fundamental technologies used in virtually all mobile devices and digital systems and networks, and these inventions are critical to the new Industrial Internet of Things era. We standardize these inventions to allow widespread utilization and adoption. The benefits of 5G are initially in massive amounts of new capacity for consumers, but as the new technology and network architecture develops, it will enable new applications for enterprises and industrial businesses, with end-to-end 5G networks forming the critical fabric for the Fourth Industrial Revolution, with Nokia Bell Labs once again at the heart of this revolution.”

Jenni Lukander, President of Nokia Technologies, said: “I am thrilled that our R&D efforts are creating new opportunities for the consumer and industrial technology ecosystem, as the 5G era gathers momentum. As an inventor for the long-term, Nokia is able to innovate for a 5G future because of the fair reward we earn through licensing the standardized technologies created from our extensive R&D investments. This virtuous cycle creates vast new potential in 5G technologies, and I am excited for the possibilities ahead.”

Nokia’s contributions in innovation and standardization are the product of over €129bn of investment into research and development over the past two decades, and approximately €4.4bn R&D expenses last year alone. With the latest declarations, the portfolio of Nokia cellular standard-essential patents (SEPs) declared to one or more of the 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G standards spans more than 3,400 patent families, of which more than 3,000 are relevant to 5G standards. This SEP portfolio has more than doubled in size over the past five years, with Nokia having a leading market share. Nokia Bell Labs produces the majority of these SEPs, and Nokia Technologies business manages and licenses this patent portfolio, with more than 200 licensees, including most major smartphone vendors and many automotive brands.

Beyond radio networks and technologies, Nokia’s end-to-end approach to 5G includes the fronthaul, backhaul and optical transport networking systems. Nokia Bell Labs recently announced a new world record in fiber optics to enable faster and higher capacity 5G networks for the future. Researchers at Nokia Bell Labs set the world record for the highest single carrier bit rate at 1.52 Terabits per second (Tbit/s) over 80 km of standard single-mode fiber – the equivalent of simultaneously streaming 1.5 million YouTube videos – and four times the market’s previous capabilities of approximately 400 Gigabits per second. These innovations demonstrate Nokia’s ability to develop end-to-end technologies for the 5G era that meet the ever-growing data, capacity and latency demands of industrial Internet of Things and consumer applications.

The 5G standardization process is managed by 3GPP. Within 3GPP, the technical specifications for 5G communications have been developed collaboratively, selecting the best technologies from those contributed by a range of innovators. Products which comply with the standard can work interoperably with those from other manufacturers, increasing consumer choice.

Nokia 3.1 Android 10 update now rolling out :How to update

7th October 2020
"Nokia phones should be the fastest to get the Android 10 update but the Nokia 3.1 seems late to the party."

Nokia 3.1 is the latest Android One smartphone from the house of HMD Global to get the Android 10 version. Android One programme has many perks, which nearly all Nokia-branded phones come with, including Android upgrades for about three years. Nokia 3.1 was launched in 2018 so it has still not hit the end of the road when it comes to Android updates. The Android 10 update is rolling out to units select countries as a part of the first wave, while more markets will be covered later.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Nokia 3.1 is now getting the Android 10 update in select markets.

  • The Nokia 3.1 was launched in 2018 under the Android One programme.

  • HMD Global recently rolled out Android 10 to a series of Nokia phones.

If you own a Nokia 3.1 in one of these markets, you will soon receive the Android 10 update in the first wave: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Belarus, Georgia, India, Kazakhstan, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Morocco, Nepal, the Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Tunisia, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, or Vietnam. The second-wave countries have not been announced yet, but they mostly will be more mature markets, the ones where Nokia is not relatively aggressive.

Android 10 was released last year so Nokia 3.1 is around a year late to the party. While the Android One programme ensures yearly Android version updates, it is not technically clear what updates these are going to be. Ideally, Nokia 3.1 should be receiving Android 11 as the final nail in the coffin for the software updates on it, but as weird as Google’s Android One programme is, it is never certain. Anyway, it is good news for Nokia 3.1 users.

To update your Nokia 3.1 to Android 10, you should:

  • Go to the Settings app
  • Now, navigate to About phone section
  • Tap on System updates and check for the new software
  • If available, you will need to manually provide authorisation for Android 10 update on your Nokia 3.1

That is all you need to do to update your phone. Make sure your phone is adequately charged and that all your data is backed up before you begin with the update process.
