How to prevent dry lips this winter?

2nd December 2020
"Prevent your lips from drying this winter."

Dry and chapped lips are a problem for almost everyone during winters. The skin on our lips is the most delicate skin on our body and is exposed to a lot of elements like sun, wind, cold air, and many more causing dryness, cracking, flaking, and peeling. So, we need to take extra care of our lips be it during winters or summer. As our lips cannot produce moisture or oil by themselves, they crack easily.

Here we have gathered tips for you on how to take care of your lips this winter.

Exfoliate and scrub before moisturizing

Once your skin on lips is dry and chapped, they can flake and peel pretty easily which sometimes might hurt you a lot. So, a gentle and soft exfoliation or scrub can remove those dry dead skin off your lips will help your lips get moisturized deeply. Or else, you'll be moisturizing your dry skin which will only keep your lips soft for a few hours.

Apply a non-irritating lip balm

There are many lip balms in the market. Some are popular than others which don't necessarily indicate that it's better than others. Many popular lip balms have ingredients that dry your lips off after a few minutes of moisturization. For instance- you might have heard of mint-flavored lip balm. They can provide a cool sensation to your lips after applying. But, remember, it also dries off your skin really fast leaving you with dry chapped lips within few spans of time. So, try to avoid lip balms with fragrance and flavors and seek out lip balms with natural ingredients. Avoid ingredients like menthol, camphor, and phenol in your lip balm.

Drink plenty of water

Lack of water in your body can cause several skin problems. One of them being dry and chapped lips. Make sure to stay hydrated and have a habit of drinking water throughout the day. The recommended amount of water differs from person to person with the variance in age, gender, and sexuality. Know your requirement and stay hydrated.

Stop licking, biting, and picking at your lips

Well, when you don't have any moisturizer or lip balm, you may feel like licking is the best option to hydrate your lips. But, saliva evaporates easily and fast leaving you with more chapped and dry skin. Moreover, you may feel like biting your lips and picking the dry dead skin off your lips.

Don't hold metallic items with your lips

Metallic items like paperclips, jewelry, and others can irritate your lips. So, try not to bring them close to your lips and don't hold them with your lips.

Get yourself a humidifier

Often dry lips are caused by dry cold air. Winter air is dry as a result many of us are troubled with chapped and dry skin. So, if you get yourself a humidifier inside your house, the air becomes moist and won't cause any dryness of the skin.

Cleaning tips for taking care of your Makeup brushes

18th October 2020
"Keep the makeup brushes clean in order to prevent your skin from acne and breakouts."

Bacterial infections are likely to grow and contaminate our skin if we do not take care of the brushes and sponges we use often as part of our makeup routine. Did you know, for instance, that dirty brushes can induce acne, close pores, and accumulate contaminants on the skin?

So, here are a few tips for managing to safely use your beauty products.

With brushes

Makeup brushes collect millions of germs that can get dirty and infect the skin. That is why keeping them as smooth as possible is so crucial. Furthermore, with the same brush, you would not end up with a combination of colours. Ideally, after using them, you can clean them. If you do not have much time, at least every other week, do not forget to clean them.

Depending on their attributes, makeup brushes should not be washed in the same way:

Natural hair brushes: primarily for powder coatings

With soapy water, rinse them and let them dry. When they are still damp, be careful not to put them in a vertical position, as their wooden wand might get broken. Once a month, you should also add a conditioner to your brushes, so that they stay flexible and smooth.

Brushes made from synthetic hair: for oleaginous items in particular

Wash it with such a solvent that is non-alcoholic. There are several leave-on cleaning methods, for instance, that can be added straight to your brush with a soft cloth.

Makeup sponges

Single-use sponges are the most hygienic. However, if you would rather use reusable sponges, do not forget to disinfect them with a bit of washing-up liquid and a drop of disinfecting alcohol. You can also clean them with baby lotion or micellar water. Leave the sponge to dry before putting it away or using it again.

Brushes for lipsticks and foundation

For those of you that apply lipstick with a brush, it is important to keep it clean. To disinfect it, use a damp cloth soaked with alcohol to give it a boost of radiance. No need to clean it too often: once a month should do.

Makeup bags

They contain all your most precious treasures, but they are often neglected when it comes to cleaning, while in fact, germs and bacteria contaminate your accessories every day. To solve this problem, clean yours completely on a regular basis (every 2 to 3 months) or just put it in the washing machine. In the meantime, refresh it with a face wipe.

Ingredients to avoid while buying a Hair Colorant/Dye

21st November 2020
"Watch out for harmful ingredients before you and your hair suffer."

Who doesn't like dyed hair that brings a better glow to our skin than our natural colored hair? Dyeing hair is fun but the aftermath might be preposterous for many of us. From frizziness to split-ends and extreme hair fall, your hair may face several problems after dyeing. The aftermath might frustrate you to the level where you wish to go completely bald, and believe me, few of them do. If you do not want to face such problems, then you must be cautious while buying your hair color. Not every ingredient in your hair dye is beneficial for your hair. Some are just chemicals to give a pleasant scent while applying but are harmful to your hair. To put you at ease, we've listed out the major ingredients that must be avoided in a hair dye to prevent your hair from any form of side-effects.

Paraphenylenediamine(PPD)

PPD is an ingredient that is widely used in most hair colorants, mostly in permanent hair colors. They are also known as oxidative. PPD is not really harmful if it's used up to 2% of the hair dye. But, if a hair dye contains PPD above the level, you may face several problems. Many people also face allergic reactions to PPD; as a result, it is widely discouraged. Even though PPD's usage is restricted in other cosmetic products, it has not been banned in any country till now. If you have used a hair dye with PPD make sure to follow the instructions strictly as it may result in something harmful otherwise. You can also find much PPD-free hair dye as well.

Para-toluenediamine(PTD)

PTD is used in most of the permanent hair colors. Natural hair color safety should be paramount in your choice of hair coloring dye. Many people also have reported having allergic reactions to PTD. The European Commission (Health and Consumer Safety) has concluded that the use of toluene-2, 5-diamine cannot be considered safe for hair coloring or hair shaft. So, try to avoid any PTD as far as possible.

Quaternium-15

If you search Quaternium-15 on the internet, you'll find some articles referring to it as- a cosmetic ingredient to be afraid of or skin toxicant and allergen. Quaternium-15 can cause irritation and sensitization. It may also cause allergic reactions to your eyes. It is also a formaldehyde-releasing preservative. It may even lead to contact dermatitis. Mainly, hairdressers and janitors are affected by this. Even though the Cosmetics Directives of the EU has agreed up to 0.2% presence of the Quaternium in cosmetic products, try to avoid the products that contain quaternary ammonium compounds by reading the labels.

Resorcinol

Resorcinol is largely used in the rubber industry. I guess this sentence clears up your thought. Even though the chemical is combined with other chemicals such as potassium hydroxide to enable its safe use, it has a skin-deep hazard ratio of 9. Also, Resorcinol is the primary cause of hair dye related contact dermatitis. So, check out the label while buying hair dye and try to avoid it.
